Recap: Detroit vs. Kansas City

Sports Network | September 22, 2008

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - David DeJesus went 4-for-4, drove in a run and scored twice in Kansas City's 6-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers in the opener of a three-game series.

Alberto Callaspo extended his hitting streak to 16 games and scored twice for the Royals, who despite being in last place in the AL Central, have won nine of their last 11 contests. The Royals, who have finished in last place each of the previous four seasons, are a game behind fourth-place Detroit.

Mike Aviles had two hits and a pair of RBI for Kansas City, while Gil Meche (13-11) was charged with four hits and two runs over six innings to pick up the victory.

Detroit, which had just four hits, lost for the 10th time in 11 games.

Zach Miner (8-5) yielded six hits and four runs over six-plus frames and had his three-decision winning streak broken.

DeJesus extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a stand-up triple to lead off the game. Aviles then singled to right field.

The Royals padded their lead in the fifth on another Aviles RBI single. DeJesus scored later in the inning on a Ryan Shealy double-play grounder.

The Tigers got within 3-2 in the sixth thanks to a Magglio Ordonez sacrifice fly and an RBI single from Jeff Larish. But with runners at the corners and two outs, Matt Joyce struck out.

Shealy walked with the bases loaded in the seventh and KC added to its lead in the eighth. Alex Gordon led off with a double and later scored on a wild pitch from Bobby Seay. DeJesus singled in Jason Smith, also in the eighth.

Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera left the game with upper back stiffness. He is day to day...Tigers designated hitter Gary Sheffield was suspended four games by Major League Baseball for his actions in Friday's Tigers-Indians contest in Cleveland. He started serving the suspension by missing Monday's game...Kansas City leads the season series, 9-7...Meche is 8-4 lifetime against the Tigers.
