Game Thread: Game 162 vs. the Cubs

CUBS PROBABLE: REDS PROBABLE:
Ted Lilly (15-8, 3.86) Homer Bailey (3-2, 5.67)
Last game of the year, one last look at Homer Bailey.
After all the indignities we've suffered this season finishing with an eight game losing streak would be pretty fitting, but I still don't want to see it happen. Hopefully Bailey can give us something to look forward to for next season.
Go Reds!

Quick FF question
And yes, I know my QBs suck. It's what happens when you get LT, McGahee, and TO. :)
Lilly's on a pitch count today.
So that means he'll only throw seven no-hit innings. Excellent.
Such a beautiful day for a ball game
5-0 Marlins
Randolph can be cleaning out his office the next 8 Innings
any one have the tie breakers?
Sad day
I think it is great

If they somehow make it in
If they don't get inthe Angels because I like that style of baseball.
I hate Cleveland but I would love them to sweep the evil empire, I would hate to watch another Yankees Sox ALCS
I don't think so
Bailey and Belise step up

That is "what If-ing" though
what if burton is the next todd coffey{though stats and how he has been solid for more than a month shows that wouldn't hold to be true}
McBeth and Bray have both showed one thing they are shaky and you just can't assume because they are young they will get better
Weathers is the Luckiest Pitcher since Danny Graves BP has made atleast 10 Web Gems in the 9th Inning to bail Weathers out.
You really can't predict what Homer is going to do next season because of the small sample size and he is so young but I hope he isn't a bust.
couldn't tell if Chris & George
As soon as the last out is recorded
But...
IIRC, last year they didn't make an announcement until after Christmas last year.
Hey folks
If the Phillies make it in, I'll be rooting for them, except for Ryan Howard because he strikes out too much. (BTW, I sent Buster Olney an email Friday about the "Howard fixing the hole in his swing" article)

i had fun this season gang
If you ask me
i should have spelled it out
Wow
Looks like...
At least there's still the Pirates to look down on. (Though they'll have a new GM next season. Should we be worried?)
And it's looking like the Mets won't make the post-season. Holy crap, what a collapse.
Thank god this awful season is over for the reds
wow, it is over
Final Day, win over the Cubs..
Now if they could just work on the other 178 days or so
6-3 Brew Crew
I really like that Rockies team Atkins, Helton and Holiday are 3 good hitters. Francis has had a great year.
Playing the D-Backs in 2 more days again if they win...I thought you couldn't play vs ur own divison in the opening round

I have my doubts about Gonzo...
well - back to work - a frustrating season, but a good time with RR.
I think the Reds...
Right, but things change
by Man Mountain on Sep 30, 2007 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions
True
I love Keppinger as much as anyone, but I'm not convinced the numbers he's been putting up are sustainable. I think he may be the new Freel. Super utility guy. He can play several infield positions as well as outfield. And he'll be 28 next spring, so there's less concern about stunting his development by using him as a bench player.
I'm not sold on Keppinger either
His D was less than advertised this year and his contract would be a very attractive one to unload if the Reds are going after pitching. It would be criminal of the Reds not to consider dealing him.
by Man Mountain on Sep 30, 2007 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions
defense
His bat was better than expected, and I don't think it's a fluke. He got a jump from moving to the NL and to a hitter's park, and that won't change next year. His salary is not that high for what he brings to the table.
His contract
I wouldn't mind having him back, but he's not a defensive wizard (as he was sold to the fans, not that many here were buying it) and I do believe that its more likely his offensive numbers will decline next season than stay the same, despite playing in GABP. Especially his OBP, which wasn't great this year anyway but it's 30 points over his career average.
In the fwiw department:
Kepp's EqA at short this year: .297
Gonzo's EqA: .260

If they get an offer...
But I think they see Gonzo as a success. A bargain at the price. Krivsky is trying to put his stamp on the team, and Gonzo is part of it. I think it's a move he's proud of.
Gonzo
Bubbafan, as usual, makes a good point about Bruce playing everyday and his age. And if Dunn and/or Griffey goes away then you will see him starting everyday for sure.
Ummm....
I made that point a long time ago.

Just sayin'
I'm coming off of a two-week
LAST.
Although our beloved Reds should have fared better this year, the RR community stood strong. Good season, everyone.
"A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request"
By the shore's of old Lake Michigan
Where the "hawk wind" blows so cold
An old Cub fan lay dying
In his midnight hour that tolled
Round his bed, his friends had all gathered
They knew his time was short
And on his head they put this bright blue cap
From his all-time favorite sport
He told them, "Its late and its getting dark in here"
And I know its time to go
But before I leave the line-up
Boys, there's just one thing I'd like to know
Do they still play the blues in Chicago
When baseball season rolls around
When the snow melts away,
Do the Cubbies still play
In their ivy-covered burial ground
When I was a boy they were my pride and joy
But now they only bring fatigue
To the home of the brave
The land of the free
And the doormat of the National League
Told his friends "You know the law of averages says:
Anything will happen that can"
That's what it says
"But the last time the Cubs won a National League pennant
Was the year we dropped the bomb on Japan"
The Cubs made me a criminal
Sent me down a wayward path
They stole my youth from me
(that's the truth)
I'd forsake my teachers
To go sit in the bleachers
In flagrant truancy
and then one thing led to another
and soon I'd discovered alcohol, gambling, dope
football, hockey, lacrosse, tennis
But what do you expect,
When you raise up a young boy's hopes
And then just crush 'em like so many paper beer cups.
Year after year after year
after year, after year, after year, after year, after year
'Til those hopes are just so much popcorn
for the pigeons beneath the 'L' tracks to eat
He said, "You know I'll never see Wrigley Field, anymore before my eternal rest
So if you have your pencils and your score cards ready,
and I'll read you my last request
He said, "Give me a double header funeral in Wrigley Field
On some sunny weekend day (no lights)
Have the organ play the "National Anthem"
and then a little 'na, na, na, na, hey hey, hey, Goodbye'
Make six bullpen pitchers, carry my coffin
and six ground keepers clear my path
Have the umpires bark me out at every base
In all their holy wrath
Its a beautiful day for a funeral, Hey Ernie lets play two!
Somebody go get Jack Brickhouse to come back,
and conduct just one more interview
Have the Cubbies run right out into the middle of the field,
Have Keith Moreland drop a routine fly
Give everybody two bags of peanuts and a frosty malt
And I'll be ready to die
Build a big fire on home plate out of your Louisville Sluggers baseball bats,
And toss my coffin in
Let my ashes blow in a beautiful snow
From the prevailing 30 mile an hour southwest wind
When my last remains go flying over the left-field wall
Will bid the bleacher bums ad?eu
And I will come to my final resting place, out on Waveland Avenue
The dying man's friends told him to cut it out
They said stop it that's an awful shame
He whispered, "Don't Cry, we'll meet by and by near the Heavenly Hall of Fame
He said, "I've got season's tickets to watch the Angels now,
So its just what I'm going to do
He said, "but you the living, you're stuck here with the Cubs,
So its me that feels sorry for you!"
And he said, "Ahh Play, play that lonesome losers tune,
That's the one I like the best"
And he closed his eyes, and slipped away
What we got is the Dying Cub Fan's Last Request
And here it is
Do they still play the blues in Chicago
When baseball season rolls around
When the snow melts away,
Do the Cubbies still play
In their ivy-covered burial ground
When I was a boy they were my pride and joy
But now they only bring fatigue
To the home of the brave
The land of the free
And the doormat of the National League
Why do I feel liek that song has been written for me?
I would ask one thing
During that dustup with Let's Go Tribe, the moderator over there wrote this silly post about us not knowing the pain of bequeathing love of the Indians to his young son. Oscar Wilde would ask us to weep at such an attitude, weep with laughter.

My 2008 Lineup
Kepp-SS
Griffey
Phillips-2B
Dunn-RF
Hamilton-CF
Encarnacion-3B
Catcher
pitcher
Rotation
Harang
Arroyo
Belise
Bailey
Cueto
Bullpen
Burton-Closer
Weathers-Setup
Bray-Setup
Salmon-middle
Couter-middle
McBeth-middle
Shearn-long/alt starter
AAA Starters
Saarloos
Dumatrait (if they can sneek him back down, shouldn't be a problem)
Rameriz
Gosling
Bench
Valetin
Cantu
Hatteberg
Gonzo
The rotation makes or breaks this team. Bailey and Belise, and McBeth and/or Salmon step up this is a damn fine team. If Bailey and Belise don't, and one or two relievers don't it will be another year of misery.
I do think that Gonzo had to be distracted

The last thing I would do...
My dad says I should, if the Yankees are out of it. He thinks your loyalty should go to the division, then the conference/league, etc., if your team is eliminated. By his reasoning, if the Reds are out of it, our loyalty should go to the Cubs, and when they're out of it, to whatever NL team is left.
But I can't do it. The rivalry is too intense. If the Cowboys are out of the playoff chase, I can't root for the Redskins. I hate them too much.
Cowboys, Yankees,
Am I right?
Yes
Dude everyone loves the lakers!
Dude everyone loves takeout!
Not my sister
She also thinks I'm an embarrassment for being a Yankees fan.
I know...
A big reason I'm a Cowboys fan is because I spent three or four of my formative years in Raleigh, NC. (I think I told you my dad is an NC State alum.) I was surrounded by Redskins fans, which only encouraged me in my Cowboys love. What can I say, I'm contrary.
I grew up in a football-only family. It wasn't until I moved to NY to go to college that I started getting interested in baseball. And it was the Yankees who were always on TV. Heck, they have their own cable channel.
As for the rest...not much of a hockey fan. It's not a popular sport in Hawaii, for some inexplicable reason. Don't like Tiger Woods. Don't like golf. It's not a sport. Though Michael Kay once said Bubba reminded him of Phil Mickelson, so I guess if I have to pick a favorite golfer, it would be him. Not into basketball or movies, either.
I'm not really into racing, either, but a very close friend of mine is. She liked Gordon, but warned me that he would only be cute for a short while: until gravity made his neck thick. She was right.
My college football team was Division III, so I root for my family's alma maters: NC State, Texas A&M, Michigan, Hawaii.
And hey, I'm a Bubba Crosby fan when I could have picked Jeter or A-Rod for a favorite player. That counts for something, doesn't it?
