Aha...
My prediction came true.  If Macarena had not used Weathers in the 9th inning of a 4-0 game on Tuesday (instead of Eddie Guardado), perhaps the tying run might not have scored in the 8th, because he could have brought Weathers in for a 1-2/3 inning save.

Also blame Krivsky for this loss.  Perhaps Coutlangus would have done better than a recovering Eddie Guardado (single, double, sac fly) in the 7th.

Please exercise Adam Dunn's 2008 option.

Very good point!
however how do we know if Brian B would pitch instead of weathers?

Half-full silver lining here..
  • It's a one-run loss to a contending team.
  • Brett Tomko sucks and we didn't let him beat us.
  • Dumatrait went six full innings (w/ 7H and 2BB) which might have helped minimize the damage that the bullpen might have done.
  • Guardado had to get his feet wet sometime.  (I do have a bad feeling about his next six weeks.  We might be better off if his back acts up again.)
  • Alex Gonzalez is continuing to play himself into a "sell high" position.  Wayne?
  • Mike Stanton has been good in August and his career September numbers are pretty sweet.
  • Mike Lieberthal sucks and we didn't let him beat us.
  • Lots of $4 Pepsis were sold at GAB today.  If the heat wave continues, Dunn's '08 salary might be covered soon.

that silver lining
is looking pretty tarnished!  milwaukee doesn't play today, so we lost a half game in our comeback attempt! ;)

by Daedalus on Aug 9, 2007 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions

So I went to the game.
That was a regrettable decision. Four hours of 105 degree weather to watch crappy managerial decisions, crappy offense, and crappier pitching.

Some notes:

  • I can think of two times today where a player should've been running and instead we had a double play. Hey Pete: If the offense isn't gonna hit, maybe you should at least let it run.
  • Relatively quietly, Junior has an OPS right around .700 since the all-star break. He needs to turn that around.
  • Perhaps it was just my vantage point, but it sure looked like the ump was ridiculously inconsistent with his strike calls on the outside corner.
  • Dumatrait's line looks solid, but once again he looked unimpressive. His control is worse than I thought and his stuff is pretty hittable as well.
  • There is no reason for Eddie Guardado to even be on this team. It was a stupid re-signing made to cover Wayne's ass after he made a stupid trade, and now we get to watch him throw fat 86 MPH fastballs over the plate for two weeks before he goes back on the DL for the rest of the year and ultimately fades into oblivion.
  • Fuck Victor Santos. This guy has no place on a major league roster.
  • It wasn't as hot as I expected. The thermometer in my car said 103 when I got in after the game, but it didn't feel that hot. But it was still hot.
  • Phillips is struggling along pretty nicely with Griffey as well. If anybody should be getting days off to get Keppinger in the lineup, it's him.
  • It is ridiculous that Adam Dunn sat against Brett Tomko and it's things like this that make me desperately want Pete Mackanin gone after this year even if he wins every single game for the rest of this season.

by Geki on Aug 9, 2007 6:05 PM EDT reply actions

Hot, Hot, Hot.....
I made the tragic mistake of going, too (I didn't realize when I ordered the tickets a few weeks ago that I would burn like a medieval heretic when I went out).  Thankfully, I took along some bottled water, and drank alot of liquids, which helped dilute the disappointment of watching what occurred on the field.  By far the most upsetting part, just as you noted, even more than the game, was the benching of Dunn.  He's not injured and Tomko is a weak pitcher.  I just cannot believe it.  I like Keppinger, but he should not be replacing our best offensive player.  To bench a 40 home run, 100 run, 100 walk, 100 RBI player when he's healthy and ready to play makes no sense to me.  Heck, put Keppinger in place of Gonzalez.  His on base percentage is lower than Jason Kendall's career batting average (and defensively he's overrated).

do you watch the minor league teams?  do they have an MiLB.TV?

by Daedalus on Aug 9, 2007 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, they have a MiLB.TV
They also have Gameday Audio (the radio broadcasts), which is free for minor league games.  You just have to register.  (The archives are free, too, if you want to go back to old games.  The Bats games often have interviews with players, coaches, etc., before the game.  They interviewed Hamilton the other day.)

MiLB.TV works pretty much like MLB.TV.  Not every game is available, because not every stadium has TV coverage.  The Bats do, though; they just added it this year.  They renovated the stadium to make room for a TV crew early this season, while the Bats were on a long road trip.

$9.95 for the season lets you watch every Bats home game, with no blackout restrictions. (It's $29.95 if you want access to all the available minor league games. Blackout restrictions do apply to that package.)

by Blue on Aug 10, 2007 1:14 AM EDT up reply actions

ok, here's the scoop
went to the game with my roommate and another friend. I was loaded up with some cards (Machado, Cantu and homer, although i was pretty sure he wasnt there) and a major league baseball and sharpie. my friends gave me no end of shit. it was dollar beer night, but i was only interested in camping out next to the bats dugout for autographs. My friends went to get me a beer at one point and stopped at the card vendor to pick me up a josh hamilton reds rookie card. very nice.

so after sitting there for a while and not seeing anyone in hte dugout, a few players started to trickle out. the first guy i saw whose autograph i wanted was johnny narron. he's pretty much a dead ringer for jerry, so he was easy to spot. he signed and included a bible verse (Matthew 6:33, which is "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.") I thought that was a cool addition actch. I also asked him when he thought Josh would be called up, and he said he hopes this week. Hobbs came out and was signing pretty much nonstop until the game started. I had him sign my ball and the card, which is now the absolute coolest card I own. Jay Bruce was very accomodating. He signed my ball, and I told him he better keep raking so i can see him up with the reds when the rosters expand. he smiled and said he hopes so too. Paul Janisch was happy to sign my ball. Marcus McBeth signed it, but he didn't say a word. He didn't seem extremely pleasant. I called Bray over, and he signed the ball as i told him that he deserves to be up, and that he should know that. He also appreciated the compliment and gave a big smile. Cantu signed my card, and hten came the big goof of the night. Cooter walked by, and I kind of looked away. My roommate asked why i didnt get him to sign the ball. I said "That's where I draw the line." He reminded me that I got McBeth to sign it, and they're pretty much the same guy, and I realized he was right. so i turned back and said "Jon, would you sign my ball?" He obliged, and I told him that it was bullshit that he was sent down, and he gave me a weird smile. When he turned to walk away I realized why. It was Tyler Pelland. I had gotten confused, and I was pretty pissed that my ball full of prospects was sullied by him. So now I have to hope that he turns into something really special. Votto never signed, even for the little kids asking for him. I dont know what was going on with that, but he came off like an ass. I never did see Machado, and he wasnt in the lineup.

we finally left and went to the outfield tables to settle down and drink our dollar beer. by the seventh inning we moved to the first-base side, and I saw a name that jogged memories of my childhood: Muellens. I was thinking, "Is that Hensley?" There was nobody there (heat), so I yelled "Hensley" and he turned around. He seemed shocked that someone knew who he was. I yelled "I have your 91 donruss rated rookie!" and he gave me a thumbs up. I said a few other things to him the rest of the night and he ackowledged each one. After the game I ran down to the Indians dugout and asked him to sign my travel mug (free from the bats). He obliged and wrote "Bam Bam" 31 under it. Very cool. And, as bf said, the bats were mashing. Votto was 3 for 4 (i coulda sworn he as 4 for 5 though) and Herr had hte two homers. His slam and Janisch's just cleared the fence in straightaway left, which is only 325.

I realize this is not written with wit or humor, making it hard to read. But it was a long night for me last night, and i just got up. Rehashing my childhood last night was amazing. Best baseball game I've ever been to. Just wanted to share it with you guys.

When the Bats were at the Coop...
I was standing beside a group of youngsters getting autographs before the game started.  I was holding a two year-old and a camera, waiting for Votto to finish signing for a few kids who may or may not have known who he was.  As he turned to jog onto the field for warm-ups and such, I said, "Hey Joey, can I get a picture?"  He turned his head and over his shoulder he started to give me the old "Uh, I gotta go see a guy about a thing.." but as soon as he saw that I was holding my son he stopped and came back to the railing saying, "Oh.  With him?  Yeah."

Preston (who is normally a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed munchkin) was not particularly impressed. But I was.

(I think that sometimes players avoid signing autographs when they are in their home ballpark because they inevitably draw a crowd and inevitably someoneis going to be disappointed when the guy has to actually, you know, go to work.  That said, I think that a "Only for kids and only while away from Louisville" policy might be a bit rich for a guy who may be months away from his first sip of MLB coffee.)

Votto's personality
I can't tell you how embellished this is, but a friend of mine was up in Toronto for a wedding a couple of weeks ago and another participant in the wedding was a former high school teammate of Joey Votto. I guess they talked about this for quite a while, and among the things I was told were these:
  • Joey Votto hit 25 homeruns in 9 high school games.
  • The former teammate of Votto was once asked if he wanted to go to the batting cages with Joey. He said yes, and they drove 2 hours to some cages, Votto hit for 3 hours, they had lunch, he hit for 2 more, then they made the 2 hour trek home. That was the only time he went to the cages with Joey Votto.
  • Votto either did or does (this part was unclear) pay a former college lefthander to throw him curveballs for a couple of hours a day.
  • Joseph Votto gets more play than a Lynyrd Skynyrd album on Adam Dunn's daiquiri deck.
True or not, I found all those to be interesting.

i read this and laughed:
the Indians are officially saying goodbye to right-handed reliever Fernando Cabrera, who was designated for assignment Aug. 1.

When the Indians designated Cabrera, they placed him on trade waivers -- the same waivers they used to acquire Gomez. An unidentified team made a claim on him, and the Indians were under the gun to work out a deal with that club. They had no leeway to talk to other clubs about Cabrera, because the non-waiver trade deadline passed on July 31.

"We were unable to work out a deal with the eligible club," Antonetti said. "So we elected to give him his release."

The Indians could have placed Cabrera on outright waivers -- in which any team could have made a claim on him, with the team with the worst overall record getting first dibs -- but they wanted to give him the leeway to select where he lands. He will clear release waivers in two business days and will then be a free agent.

The Tribe's patience with Cabrera, who was out of Minor League options, was, ultimately, unrewarded. He went 3-3 with a 5.19 ERA in 51 appearances last season and 1-2 with a 5.61 ERA in 24 games this year.

"His development, and where we are as a Major League team [didn't mesh]," Antonetti said. "He's still going to be a very good Major League pitcher, but he needs to get regular work. We were not able to give him that regular work."

i laughed because i got this idea in my head that wayne was the one who claimed him
