Game Thread: Game 114 vs. the Dodgers

DODGERS PROBABLE: REDS PROBABLE:
Brett Tomko (2-9, 5.56) Phil Dumatrait (0-1, 16.20)
It's the second career start for Dr. Düm. He only went 3.1 IP last time out. Given the stellar starting the team has gotten this week, the bullpen should be rested, but it's still the bullpen. Dumatrait needs to keep the shutout streak alive and give the Reds their first 3 game shutout streak since 1963.
The Dodgers are throwing out former Red Brett Tomko who has been quite hittable this year, but otherwise hasn't pitched that bad. You'll recall that Tomko was a part of the deal that brought Ken Griffey Jr. to the Reds. Since that deal, Griffey has gone 7 for 14 against Tomko with a 1.611 OPS. I'm calling for #590 today.
Oh, and Adam Dunn gets the day off today. He has a .188 batting average against Tomko in 16 ABs, but he also has a .944 OPS. Anyway, we get Keppinger in the outfield for the second time in his career.

Oh, and
What doesn't make sense to me
I guess he's been struggling (he hasn't). His last month has been terrible (it hasn't): .270/.387/.551

Yeah, I was surprised we weren't able to score
Other than Dunn's absence..
I'm pick Hopp and Kepp to stir a lil' something up today.
And if you assume that Big Dümmy isn't going into the seventh or eighth then having Dunn on the bench to pinch hit at some point is not so bad. (Ya get the Big Donkey out of the 225 degree temps for most of the afternoon.)
Does Dunn really need to rest?
and I somehow expect that Ellison will pinch-hit before Dunn...
My point is that..
I'd rather see Dunn playing. Especially because now he has more free time to goof off in the dugout trying to impress the new guy on the team: "Hey Jason, ya ever catch a fifteen pound bass? No? Well, that's cuz you're prolly not drinking enough beer. What's your handicap?"

not sure
it wasn't
Hopper was on 3B
It was like a Brennaman family fantasy play.
Keppinger was on 1B
In case you hadn't heard.
Absolutely
As Hopper gets another single
I'm against promoting "productive outs" because it ultimately glorifies players who contribute "positively" by doing overall negative things like sac bunting, sac flying, "moving runners over" etc. Ergo, you have Reds fans who want 9 Hoppers rather than 9 Adam Dunns. Hopper is fine as a fourth or fifth outfielder and Kepp is fine as a utility infielder; the problem is that they are being feted as if they do things of equal importance to Dunn, Griffey, etc.
Probably an overcorrection on our part, but that's the nature of the beast.
speaking of having the same guy bat in all spots..
By the way, I would without a doubt take 9 Adam Dunns over any other hitter in the lineup.

what's the most important
I'll answer that
I'm not a baseball scout here like you are
Respect
Because I don't believe you are looking up relevant information to support your often stalwart opinions on what the Reds should do. Case in point: you made the comment 3 times that the Reds should take a look at "Aaron Rowland" to fill an outfield space if Dunn leaves. We all misspell words and especially names all the time, but the fact that you consistently misspelled his name the same way tells me that you never looked up his career stats or his contract situation, etc: an absolute must if your going to persuade me why I should consider your opinion valid. Otherwise, your just flapping your gums to the tune of 1300 posts in 3 months or whatever. That can get aggravating.
And if you read through the great SABR diaries that Slyde et al put out as you said you did, you would know that phrases like "good contact" and "can steal a base or two" are absolutely meaningless without context, i.e. is his contact getting him on base? is his contact coming at the expense of earning walks? is he stealing "a base" while getting thrown out the other two times?
You're an affable young fellow and I respect the way you have taken a lot of abuse and rolled with it, but it's time to get serious. Posters like Slyde, Paul and Geki have taken the time to explain their thinking to you in good faith and with ample support for their opinions; you owe them the same courtesy.
Thank you
I have read the great Series everyone has done on SABR. I got a Bill James Book but havent had time to read it because I'm finishing two other books.
The point is unlike most people here believe that the game is all about numbers I think there is more to it than just that. I look at Dunn and I see a very solid and good player I don't need to look at his OPS to know that, it's a great reference point but watching the game is way more important than stats. For Example 2 out RBIs say Griffey had 41 this season, you would say well based on his stats he gets some bigs hits. Well what if 20 of the 41RBIs where when the reds were down 14-1 or up 9-2. It is still good to bat in runs when you can but stats can be misleading. Brandon Larson, he had a great run at Triple A but didn't produce in the bigs. If you look at his track record you would of been stumped on how he sucked so bad up here. That is why I hate Wayne Krivsky, he seems to just look at stats and track records rather than listening to his scouts when making a move.
I Respect what everyone has to say here, and i don't mind being teased but just because i don't agree with 100% of what everyone theroys are doesn't make that stupid. You guys believe stats say everything, I believe Stats are a great reference but there is more to baseball than just that. If we all have one thing in common is that we are all reds fans and want the team to win, so lets just forget about this and root the team on :}.
Find one single instance
My point wasn't that you misspelled his name, but that it indicates to me that you probably didn't check his career numbers, his peripherals, or his contract situation. The name "Rowland" would have turned up Rowland Office, Mike Rowland, Chuck Rowland, and the inimitable Pants Rowland, but not Aaron. I might be completely off base, but I doubt I am. I've made my living the past 4 years reading and critiquing position papers and argumentative essays from men and women your age, and I know when someone's flying by the seat of his pants.
It goes without saying that "stats" cannot forecast the future or tell you everything relevant about a player, but they can tell us many many valuable things to know about a player, particularly once we realize that our perception of a player's performance "on the field" can be skewed by events, opinions, and ephemera that have nothing to do with what the player actually does "on the field."
I haven't watched many Phillies games this year; neither have you. I didn't see a whole lot of ChiSox games the years Rowand played with them. If we are going to discuss the possibility of the Reds signing Aaron Rowand, I feel better arguing from a position of having seen him play a number of times AND having his relevant stats in front of me, then just arguing from a general (and vague) impression I have of him from seeing him play a few times.
I like this site because I love the Reds; I like watching them play on the field in real time more than anything else. Rather than killing that love for baseball, having a feel for the numbers actually deepens my passion and affection for it. And, I think, makes me a better observer of the game. This is the only sports blog I frequent in which the community feels duty bound to back up their opinions with evidence. I fail to do that every so often, and someone calls me on it just as he or she should. That's why I like it, and I'm pretty sure that's why so many others here like it. That may not appeal to you, but that's the community you've entered and communities tend to police themselves for better or worse. It irks me when you still dismiss metrics like "OBPjfkajf;ldfhj;hdt" or "ERAidfjiorejgii" (even tongue in cheek) because guys like Slyde are very generous in their time and patience explaining these concepts which are really no more complex than ERA or batting average.
Anyway, as I said, you seem like a very nice young man and I apologize for being unduly harsh, but sometimes being unduly harsh is the only way to get a point across. If I'm out of line on this, I expect someone to tell me. The great irony is that you seem to dislike the moves Wayne Krivsky makes as much as anyone here, but you seem to evaluate players using the same line of reasoning he does, i.e. "puts the ball in play," "steals a base or two," "good contact guy," "gutsy player that makes things happen." These phrases might me something, but without proper context they mean nothing. Welcome to Wayne's world.
But please know that I'm with you in Reds fandom.
Context is relative to perception
