Interesting...
Why is Cantu at first?

Isn't he a 2B or 3B?

Or is he so bad that he's really a DH?

If Krivsky doesn't exercise Adam Dunn's 2008 option, I'm a Mets fan until they fire him.

by Paul Householder on Aug 21, 2007 6:49 PM EDT reply actions

IMO
He's really a DH.

But he can play 1B.

I think he's in the lineup because he's right-handed.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Aug 21, 2007 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

The reason I asked...
Was that TB used him mainly as a 2B and 3B when he went .286/.311/.497 (28 HR) in 2005 as a 23-year old, but he made like 400 errors that year.

That being said, I actually think this might work out, since he has the same sort of offensive profile as BP (a free swinger) and is only 25, with a heck of a lot more evidence of success in the bigs.

If Krivsky doesn't exercise Adam Dunn's 2008 option, I'm a Mets fan until they fire him.

And then there are class issues involved
in Duke students' dislike of all state schools, including UNC.

However, this has gotten slightly better with a program that has created scholarships for students who attend both schools and has started a bus between them.  When I was there, though, many undergrads looked down on UNC as if it couldn't possibly have any good faculty (though quite a few departments were better than their counterparts at Duke) or intelligent students.  After all, they're poor.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Aug 21, 2007 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

It's very prevalent at Duke.
I'm still amazed that only 41% of Duke undegrads receive need-based aid of any form.  That means that almost 3/5 of them have families that can pay out of pocket (or with some form of private borrowing) over $50k a year!  And while that by itself doesn't translate into lack of caring or whatever, Duke students are, by and large, completely unaware/insensitive to their immense privilege, which gets rather annoying.

by Gray on Aug 21, 2007 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

But
out of proportion to teenagers in general? I have a lot of students from poorer areas who have seen/experienced poverty, but they're by-and-large still self-involved shits when it comes down to it.

It's part of the maturation process.

I agree that becoming less self-absorbed
is a completely natural part of maturation, but I do think that a lack of understanding of how everything you have isn't in direct proportion to your value as a human being is more prevalent among the populations who attend expensive private schools, esp. in the Northeast.

Yeah, but...
...there are lots of very good colleges that aren't private and hugely expensive.

I went to a private and very expensive college.  (Weirdly, it was more affordable than my state college, even though my dad's a professor at the state college, because of the more generous financial aid package.)

But the less expensive nearby colleges had better teachers, who were more willing to spend time with students (especially lowly undergrads).  Indeed, more than one of my favorite professors ended up being fired for not bringing in enough research money or publishing enough papers.  And teaching at the less expensive, less competitive school nearby.

The mind of Wayne is a weird place...
Saarloos was called up to give them a long-relief right hander during the Braves series.

I would guess that he will go down on Friday and Matt Belisle will be recalled to take Dumatrait's place in the rotation.
Or Gosling.

Or somebody else.

All in the mind of Wayne Krivsky...

What about Jon?
Why not call up Coutlangus?  Heck, why in the world did they send him down to begin with?  He was one of the few relievers on this team who seemed to know what he was doing (when he was throwing strikes).  Instead, I have to go through the roller coaster when they cart out Stanton, Majewski, Guardado, et al.
