Tonight's Lineup: Must be a southpaw on the mound
REDS:
Hopper CF
Keppinger SS
Griffey RF
Phillips 2B
Dunn LF
Encarnacion 3B
Cantu 1B
Jorgensen C

Wow, Keppinger and Hopper, 1-2. The Braves haven't got a chance against such right-handed scrappiness.
And here's the bad guys:
BRAVES:
Escobar SS
Diaz LF
L. Jones 3B
Teixeira 1B
Francoeur RF
A. Jones CF
McCann C
Johnson 2B
Reyes P

Interesting...
Isn't he a 2B or 3B?
Or is he so bad that he's really a DH?
by Paul Householder on Aug 21, 2007 6:49 PM EDT reply actions
IMO
But he can play 1B.
I think he's in the lineup because he's right-handed.
The reason I asked...
That being said, I actually think this might work out, since he has the same sort of offensive profile as BP (a free swinger) and is only 25, with a heck of a lot more evidence of success in the bigs.

Joey can borrow my voodoo doll if he wants
Though I think Cantu was called up for just this purpose: a right-handed bat to replace Conine and platoon with Hattie at 1B.
I agree. He's up as a RH hitter
Well...
At least...

that said
by Man Mountain on Aug 21, 2007 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions
And then there are class issues involved
However, this has gotten slightly better with a program that has created scholarships for students who attend both schools and has started a bus between them. When I was there, though, many undergrads looked down on UNC as if it couldn't possibly have any good faculty (though quite a few departments were better than their counterparts at Duke) or intelligent students. After all, they're poor.
Part of being smart
by Man Mountain on Aug 21, 2007 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions
no doubt
I will say that the vast majority of "priviledged" students I've had anywhere are aware of their priviledge, grateful for it, and eager to give back. The stereotype of the nefarious, cold rich student is largely a bogeyman to make the rest of us feel better. Most seem a little embarrased by it.

problem is
Yes.
by Paul Householder on Aug 21, 2007 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, but...
I went to a private and very expensive college. (Weirdly, it was more affordable than my state college, even though my dad's a professor at the state college, because of the more generous financial aid package.)
But the less expensive nearby colleges had better teachers, who were more willing to spend time with students (especially lowly undergrads). Indeed, more than one of my favorite professors ended up being fired for not bringing in enough research money or publishing enough papers. And teaching at the less expensive, less competitive school nearby.
They tend to think
In baseball terms

Now if you will excuse me, I'm getting lost in the taste of the Newbees.
We did get some fantastic Big O tonight.
Good game tonight, but I was flipping between it and an even better one being played in Detroit (and a lil' bit of that Christine Yamanpour thigmajig).
If this game would have been played two weeks later somewhere south of New Hampshire, it would be referred to as "an all-time classic" or some such hyperbole.

Hey, they won...
From the AP game notes...
The mind of Wayne is a weird place...
I would guess that he will go down on Friday and Matt Belisle will be recalled to take Dumatrait's place in the rotation.
Or Gosling.
Or somebody else.
All in the mind of Wayne Krivsky...
It's not that weird, but why wouldn't the call up Cueto?
