Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Game Thread: Game 94 vs. the Braves

TIME: 1:05 @ Turner Field

METS PROBABLE:                      REDS PROBABLE:
John Smoltz (9-5, 3.07)               Aaron Harang (10-2, 3.70)

Harang has been pitching pretty well so you figure the Reds should have at least a fighting chance against Smoltz.

Go Reds!

because it's the hated braves.  we have harang going, so i'm optimistic.  he kind of had an off day last time, even though he won, so he's due for a killer performance.

No BP?
With two of your starters out, YOU DON'T SIT YOUR BEST HITTER AND REPLACE HIM WITH TWO ROOKIES, NEITHER OF WHOM WILL BE MAJOR LEAGUE STARTERS IN THE FUTURE.  Mackanin needs to stop letting Jerry fill out the lineups.  Gonzalez is supposed to be back Friday, right?  Why not wait until then to rest BP?

Why not just throw Toothache in there, too?

Agreed.
The two things that are wrong with this lineup are that Hopper (Mr. .328 OBP) is leading off instead of Hatteberg (.401 OBP), and BP is out.  If you're really wanting to go for the sweep of a team in the middle of a pennant race (and right now, these small victories are all you can go for), you should put your best lineup out there.

At least we aren't getting a toothache right now.

Please don't trade Adam Dunn.

Day Game after a stressful night game
I'm more surprised the Grif's in than that BP's out. BP needs a day off now and then. Freel too. Hopper hasn't been terrible and Keppinger can hit the baseball.Plus Lopez adds some defense. We've got our best guy on the mound so I think it a good time to rest a couple of guys. I think Pete is trying to get everyone involved in a more understandable and organized way than Jerry ever did. NOW if Moeller were in the lineup then I'd be more concerned.

my mother and step father are at the game today. They live in Atlanta and have a ticket package. They  are unencumbered by baseball knowledge yet cannot shut up about the Bravos. They suck, as do many Braves fans. (Before I get jumped on, I lived in Atlanta for 9 years- high school thru mid-20's and have first hand experience in such matters.)

I'm no fan of the Braves, or their fans
But still one of the coolest things I've seen at a baseball game was John Smoltz striding out from the bullpen in Turner Field after the 8th inning.  The stadium was electric, and he seemed like an untouchable man-god (which, at that time, he pretty much was).  It was perhaps the closest thing I've seen to Achilles.  Before we got our own Breaker of Horses, of course.  Anyway, it's something I'll always remember, and think despairingly of whenever I see someone waddle out of our own bullpen.

Just read this on Olneys Blog
Heard an interesting rumor -- and that's may be all it is, a rumor -- that makes sense, to a certain degree: The Braves are interested in Cincinnati right-hander Bronson Arroyo. But I cannot imagine the Reds making that deal without getting Jarrod Saltalamacchia in return; so far, Cincinnati GM Wayne Krivsky has been asking for big-time return in his trade proposals.

Would you guys make a straight up trade Arroyo for Saltamacchia?

by CamIam on Jul 18, 2007 11:45 AM EDT reply actions

You know people make that argument...
And sure, a top-flight catcher would be nice, but I'm content with our Joe Oliver-caliber catcher.  Clearly, we have much bigger concerns elsewhere.

by Gray on Jul 18, 2007 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions

True
I cant see the logic in trading trading Arroyo unless you are getting a young stud arm in return. Who slots into Arroyo's spot next year if we move him? Now if Wayne could package Lohse and Weather and insert minor league player here for Saltamacchia I would be okay with that.

by CamIam on Jul 18, 2007 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I still don't see
why Saltamacchia is such a need here.  Our offense is solid.  We have a great base of 2B and 3B, two outstanding outfielders and one possible star if he can stay healthy, a great prospect at 1B, a decent catcher who should settle into hitting around .250 and isn't a defensive liability...

The only position needs I see at this point are at short and perhaps in the outfield, depending on how Hobbs does.  The needs of this team almost solely lie in pitching.

by Gray on Jul 18, 2007 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with this assessment
Plus, don't we have a guy named Joey Votto who deserves a look at 1B? As far as catcher is concerned, I'm fine with Ross.
Today is the first day of the rest of the season.

by satyanaas on Jul 18, 2007 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

it makes no sense at all
first of all, he's cheap.  secondly, milton's salary comes off the books next year.  thirdly, you have lohse to trade.  fourthly, the offense is not the problem with this team.  it is a totally unnecessary move and i wish i hadn't heard this rumor.

No. Not Straight Up.
Only way Id deal is Arroyo & Conine for Saltamaachia and Rafael Soriano and another prospect.

Atlanta would require a 1B of sometype to complete a deal for Salty.

But the teams don't match up real well.  The Braves have focused on rebuilding their bullpen the last year, it would not make sense for them to trade one of those guys, and the Reds don't really need another catcher or 1st Baseman.

by MixFMKyle on Jul 18, 2007 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

i dont think this would be a terrible
trade, actch. first, salty is pre-arb/arb for another 4 years. second, bronson is cheap next year, but he's certainly not cheap for 2009 and 2010 ($49.5M, $11M, team option at $11M for 2011). if bronson regresses, we're going to be kicking outselves for the backloaded contract, but salty at that point would still be making arbitration money. And he could go a long way in stabilizing our offense if we lose dunn and/or griffey.

that being said, bronson probably will continue to outperform most pitchers making $10M the next couple years IMO, and his production might not easily be duplicated on the free agent market. Im growing increasingly convinced that his blip this season was due to narron's stupidity and not bronson's partying, rock 'n' roll or inferiority.

There have been other rumors of the Pirates offering Ian Snell or Tom Gorzelanny  straight up for Salty.  I would think if the Braves were to trade him, they would be smarter to go with one of the younger, and much cheaper guys.

i'm not sure

Do you not see this?

Reds look to be big sellers
Sell, sell, sell. Look for the team to shed players and their salaries. The biggest chips the Reds have, but the two most complicated guys to move, are Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn. Cincinnati could be looking to move a few other veterans including first baseman Scott Hatteberg and Jeff Conine, right-handed starter Kyle Lohse and reliever David Weathers. The Reds likely have very few players who would be deemed "untouchables." -- Mark Sheldon

that these decisions should be analyzed ex ante, not ex post--i.e. were they the best decisions at the time?  not: did the decision work out?

However.  I am never a fan of taking out Dunn late with such a slim lead.  Furthermore, I think BP should have been saved to pinch hit for the pitcher, or double-switched in.

I apologize.
I was unduly harsh on you today, so I apologize.

I think you are probably an old-school baseball fan, and you may believe the traditional conventional wisdom that strikeouts are bad (regardless of the player's ability to produce runs) and speed at the top of the order is good (regardless of the player's ability to get on base).  Please keep an open mind to what people are posting in the diaries regarding sabermetrics and see if you can change your viewpoint.  If, after reading and understanding what they say, you still adhere to your current view, then fine, but what has made me angry about your position is that it just seems like you haven't engaged any alternative points of view, yet you continue to post what you post, regardless of people's evidence to the contrary.

I must say that in the time that I have been reading and posting here, I have become a much more educated baseball fan, and I'd encourage you to read the stuff people are posting and engage it intellectually.  The recent diaries by boobs, sidnancy, Menace and BLee2525 have been excellent.
