I have a reconstructed ticket to Tom Browning's perfect game. My dad (cop at the time) couldn't take me to the game, and ripped up the tickets out of frustration. I was disappointed that night, but hey, there's always a game next week, right? Man, was I pissed the next morning. It's a tough thing to know you missed a perfect game, even when you're 11 years old.

Bailey pitching well
But he's walking more than I like.  And he still has trouble holding runners on and fielding his position.

Bats winning, but I think Jae Seo has been the better pitcher so far tonight.

Oops.  Bailey just gave up a three-run homer.  Bats aren't winning any more.

Ugh
Homer gave up only one hit until the 6th inning.  The Bats were leading 1-0.  Then it all went to hell.

Salmon came in in relief, face three batters, and didn't get any outs.  Bray came in and cleaned up the mess.

Homer's line for the night:

5.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO, 1 HR, 3.07 ERA.

97 pitches, 55 for strikes.

My WhatIf team is 7-14 and has lost something like 300 games in a row.

Pathetic.

I have just called up a no-name from AAA to replace a guy with a 14+ ERA and he has managed a 14+ himself. I think my lowest starters ERA is something like 6.50 and I have more than a couple relievers well over 12 (not counting the guy I sent down).

What the hell did I do wrong? :)

This was spread out, though.
Highest run total in an inning was 13.  My team scored every single inning.

Jr. finished 5-for-7 with 3 HRs.  Barry Larkin hit two HRs, too.  Total HRs for my team: 9.

I went to go see the Baseball In America exhibit
in Cleveland this afternoon and I would highly reccommend it.

I looked up FRobby in the database and I didn't know that he went into Cooperstown with an Orioles hat. I wonder why that is? Maybe the Triple Crown in '66?

Looking at his stats, it looks like most of the biggies came while in a Reds uni. For example, 324 of his 586 homers and 1009 of his 1812 RBIs came in with the Wishbone C.

I'll tell you, I'm really wishing I could have seen this guy play, because he posted some absolutely MONSTER numbers in Cincinnati. A rookie season of 38 HRs and 83 RBIs and an OPS+ of 142...that'll do.

If you look at the top three names of similar players through age 26 on Dunners page at baseball-reference.com, you see Darryl Strawberry, Jose canseco, and Reggie Jackson.

That ain't bad company, and I think we'd be happy if his career panned out with some of the highlights that those players have had.

He had no compunction breaking up a dp with a very hard slide into second base.

He played on some great O's teams in the mid 60's to early 70's.

But to me he will always be a Red. It was brutal to watch him in the 70 Series thinking he should be our right fielder. Seems like he hit two out against the Reds. Our outfield was Rose (RF), Tolan, Carbo

Just saying that having Conine hold the runner would have increased the chances of a hit and canceled out at least some of the advantage of keeping the force play in order.  Also, the DP wasn't needed.  There were 2 outs.

I may be biased here
But as someone who has been (egregiously) accused in a paternity suit, this pisses me off to no end. Hate is a REALLY strong word in my vocabulary, but it applies to the person who put me through that mess for her own amusement.

As for the case, the man involved deserves compensation. Not from the state, mind you, but from the biological father. I propose that the biological father make the exact same payments as the plaintiff. And if I were the plaintiff, I would have it written into the settlement that the biological father had to sing "Money To Burn" while the he(plaintiff) pissed on the ashes of the burning pile of singles (again, written into the settlement that it must be paid in singles) that make up the pre-arranged payment.

Not that I'm bitter about my experience or anything. :)

So, in review
Thank goodness the brilliant defensive replacements made such a HUGE difference in this game.  I mean, can you image what might have happened if Dunn were still clobbering around in left field when Andruw jones hit that routine fly ball to end the game?  And how would Encarnacion have been able to stand at third base as well as Keppinger in the lasdt inning?  True genius.  Without that type of managerial leadership, I don't know how the Reds could ever have maintained such a successful winning percentage.

Brenneman's ceaseless blabbering - Why can't the boy shut up for a few minutes - hell even a few seconds....

Summary:
Bronson - Awesome
Offense - Well shared
          Ross 2 hits
Defense - Could have been better there at the end
The Bad - Mike Stanton of old has returned
The Good -3 wins - 3losses w/12 to go FVA.
          Keppinger in the line up with EdE
Despite the 8th a good game to win.

We are no longer the worst team in the National League. 1/2 game better than the Nationals. Rejoice.

We're 1 back of Houston, and 1 1/2 back of Pittsburgh.

They're right next to a gas station
Takes some of the aura and mystique away from them.  The constant parade of popped collars in the area is pretty scary though.

Bengals will go 12-4, beat the brocos in the wild card round and then lose to the Colts the next round.

Juan at the Bat
Here's a poem I composed last month, in homage to the June 20 game, when our ex manager decided to pinch hit with Juan Castro.  Enjoy.

"Juan at the Bat"

Two outs in the ninth,
need a rally for two runs.
Poor Josh can't hit lefties.
It's time to replace.
Up from the dugout
with his .167 average,
jumped the mighty Juan Castro
and his invisible bat.
Not one, not two.
Yes, several practice swings.
Hitting the air, as he does
when he bats for real.
What is it, you say?
He's 1 for 1 against their ace.
That's right,
he had a hit off him
just seven years ago.
Since then, the mighty Juan
and his invisible bat did hit
enough to remind us all
why he sits on the bench.
But Juan, dear man
he was determined to hit
his very first home run
since Reconstruction.
The mighty Juan did bat,
he swung only three times.
Not seven,
as he did in practice.
Only three this time.
Strike one.
Strike two.
A ball.
Dear Juan,
the mighty man and his invisible bat
wanted just once
to make that sound.
But it was not to be this game,
as it hasn't his whole career.
With the last wave of his invisible bat,
the mighty Juan
has struck out.
