Game Thread Part 2/Eventual Bitch Session

I'll go ahead and throw this up for the last inning and the inevitable venting that will take place afterward.

If you would like, we could save time and just link to any number of game threads from last year.  The more things change...

for some reason
i really dont feel like bitching about this. theres no way our pen can continue to be this atrocious. i chalk it up to a couple bad days. Our lineup looks better with the emergence of hamilton, and our starting pitching has been great. i think we're going to improve as the year goes on.
And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Reds have to win with Arroyo/Harang
Reds are 3-4 so far, looking at 3-5 with their 2 aces. That doesn't cut it from the #1/#2 starters. Not that it's their fault!  I just can't see the combo of Belisle/Lohse (who are 5-1 so far) to continue at that pace.

If you want to know, his question pretty much requires play-by-play data for all of history.  But even if he was willing to accept back to 1957, that's still a lot of data and that kind of question can't be answered online yet.  However, my guess is that a year from now it will take 2 minutes to get at baseball reference.  He's just not there yet.

Kevin Maas
Yankees...I seem to remember him getting off to some kind of unbelievable start, like 12 HRs in 50 ABs or something.

Delgado started well too. I think he had 8 in April or something.

by greg456 on Apr 19, 2007 10:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Maas HR #5 in 48th AB
Delgado however hit his 5th in his 25th AB and had 8 in his first 49 AB, putting up a .271/.352/.771 line.  He then went .183/.352/.244 for the next month or so and was sent back to the minors (or injured) and didn't play another game in the majors after June 8th that season.

I don't know
I think Josh Hamilton would be pretty happy if had Carlos Delgado's career.

And I didn't post the details of Delgado's season to say anything about Hamilton.  I just thought it was interesting that Delgado had 8 home runs by the end of April but only finished the season with 9.  It's not like Delgado isn't a great player.  I guess he still had some learning to do (he was only 22 that season).

2007 Reds Threat Level is Yellow

by Slyde on Apr 20, 2007 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I remember that season...
I was in sixth grade.  It was the same year that Jordan retired the first time.  I had a Carlos Delgado rookie card, and didn't know who he was.  Then all of a sudden he was hitting a home run on Sportscenter every night.  Delgado mania swept my little league team, and one player even changed his number to match.

Then out of nowhere, Delgado was gone.  Several years later, he resurfaced, and I was like is that the same dude that used to be awesome?

We're wanted men, we'll strike again...but first let's have a beer!

by chandrathan on Apr 20, 2007 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm sure he would
But I think a lot of fans would be disappointed.

And it was really Maas I was talking about.  The guy who gave NoMaas.org its name.

Rather sobering, and it does drive home that it's still very early.  Maas set a record when he hit 10 homers in only 77 ABs, and was runner up for rookie of the year behind Sandy Alomar.  The Yankees thought he was going to be the next Mattingly.  Instead, he had trouble even sticking in the big leagues. Three years later, the Yanks released him, and a year after that, he was out of baseball completely.  He was barely 30 years old.

How can that be?  How can someone who seemed to have so much talent fizzle like that?  I don't remember hearing that he was injured or anything.

Trent's postgame report
First of all, Bronson said he was out of gas after the seventh. His curveball wasn't working, so he had to throw more fastballs than usual, and that took it out of him. Thought with a 6-2 lead he was OK.

Also, asked Jerry why Castro, he seemed peeved at the question. Said he thought he was the best chance to get on base. He didn't want to use Javy without someone on base. Of course, not using Javy meant no one got on base.

Asked him about Junior, and again he seemed upset with the question, saying Junior wasn't even in the ballpark.

Fujikawa(Hanshin Tigers), 26years old, is the Japanese version of Papelbon. His ERA was 0.68(IP:79 SV:17 W:5 L:0) last year. But the team feel a strong need for him yet.

Iwase(Chunichi Dragons) will become a FA in August this year. The newspaper says, Mariners are interested in him and Fukudome(Dragons' hitter).
Also, Kawakami(Dragons' ace) become a FA next year. Reds should focus on them. A lot of Japanese players want to play in the big leagues.

Great insight
Fukudome played in the WBC last year, right?  At third base?  He could come in handy next year when the Reds trade EdE for some relievers.

By the way, which NPB team is your favorite?  I spent a semester in Tokyo a few years ago and made it out to some Giants and Fighters (the year before they moved to Sapporo) games.  I regret not going to more.

Gotta love the name by itself...
Fukudome.  Goes great with a few other members of the Reds.

(I know, the pronunciation is not quite what it looks like, just like Matsushita.)

Don't mind me...just thinking positive and pitching to contact, that's all...

do you follow Japanese baseball?
I'm wondering how former Yankee Aaron Guiel doing with his new team, the Tokyo Yakult Swallows.

Thank you very much!
Wow, poor Ralph Malph is not doing so well.  I thought he'd really rake over there in Japan.

Narron bashing
I think pitchers taking themselves out of games happens much more than we think it does. We have the luxury--and the limitation--of going by pitch count and our amateur observation of a guy's stuff (if anyone on here is a scout, I apologize). But a manager and a starting pitcher have the advantage of dialogue. Trust me--a manager will always have a better idea of how a starter is doing than we will. Frankly, I think it says good things about Narron if a pitcher can be honest with him and say he's out of gas.

I don't think Narron had anything to do with the loss tonight. Saarloos, Weathers, and Stanton had all pitched well before tonight. Who else was he supposed to bring in? Obviously, this raises the issue of how good our bullpen is. The answer is: not very. Bill Bray and Gary Majewski are the prospective saviors! Huzzah!

Anyway, this season is far too young to overreact, but jeez, these past couple of games have been frustrating.

Watched the game tonight
with my officemate who's an Asstro's fan.

After Weathers gave up the 3 runs in the 8th for the tie:

MoFo: "Who's y'alls closer?"
Me: "That's him."
MoFo: "Why did you bring him in in the 8th?"
Me: "To make sure that didn't happen."
MoFo: "What didn't happen?"
Me: "What just happened"

Exeunt, MM getting filthy drunk at bar...

The scene begins with darkness and the profound sound of shaving.

Observations now that I'm less pissed off
  • Josh Hamilton continues to amaze me. His current homerun rate is about equal to that of A-Rod, who already has 10 homers. The kid really has everything to not only be a good player, but to be an absolute star, and evidently he has it in him to fulfill some of that right now, which I don't think anyone could have expected.
  • For the record, Adam Dunn's batting average of .317 is 70 points above his career mark, yet his OBP of .379 is exactly equal to his career mark. He's on pace for 43 homeruns and just 97 RBIs. Oh, and he's striking out at pretty much the same rate he has in the past. His new approach is nice and pretty for all the idiots on talk radio, but thus far, Adam Dunn's production with a .317 average has been the same as what he was giving us with a .250 average. Hopefully his lack of power thus far (he has three real homeruns this season, and two came in his first two ABs of the season) as well as his fairly poor walk-rate is just Dunn being Dunn (and therefore streaky) and not a byproduct of his changed approach, but you have to wonder.
  • Alex Gonzalez's defense has not been anywhere near what it was cracked up to be, and that's not just because of his error tonight. His range has been mediocre and he hasn't been the surehanded guy we're paying almost $5 mil this year. Offensively, he's managing to hit .286 but still be almost completely useless at the plate. He needs to come out of it both offensively and defensively.
  • Phillips has some big-time power. Can somebody untell him that? He could definitely hit 30 homers in a season if he keeps swinging at it like he is right now, but he needs to level out his swing if he wants to be all that productive of a player.
  • It'd be nice to know what's wrong with Conine.
  • I propose that until someone distinguishes himself as not useless, all members of the bullpen should be assigned a letter to be referred to by. They don't deserve names.
  • It's a shame that Arroyo can't get a win, and while I'm sure some people will look down on it, I liked his backhanded jab at the bullpen after the game. They deserved it.
  • While it ultimately had no bearing on the game, Narron taking out Dunn for Hopper in the top of the 8th was an infuriatingly bad move. First of all, Dunn's defense hasn't been a problem this year. Second of all, he's the team's second best hitter right now. Lastly, Norris Hopper isn't even that good of a defender himself. C'mon, Jerry. You can't start with defensive replacements with two innings left to go when the guy has yet to do any butchering this year.
  • Ross and Edwin have to start hitting sometime...right?

Great post
I'm really getting used to the bulletpoints.

Anyone who is the first overall pick in the amateur draft, especially a high school player, has immense ability.  Injuries are usually what keep these young men from making an impact in MLB.  I still am amazed that Hamilton has such impressive plate discipline after being away from the game for so long...and truth be told he didnt have good patience previously.

Arroyo is the Hard Luck Kid.

Alex Gonzalez is a tad heavier than I anticipated.  I'm not gonna blast him, he's dealing with some pretty major stuff right now off the field.

The bullpen has a ton of serviceable major league pitchers, but no real shining stars.  At this point I would consider dialing up Esteban Yan. That's the major problem, along with lack of velocity.  I havent checked but I sure hope Ryan Wagner isnt lighting it up in DC.

The recent sweep by the Astros worries me, mainly because it happened @ GABP.  Tough losses on the road are easier to shake off.  I hate losing in this manner in front of the home crowd.

Dont expect any major upswings in attendance.  Winning begets fan interest.

Is it ignorance or apathy? Hey, I don't know and I don't care...

Dunn
I agree with most of your points. Dunn's production isn't bad considering he's been hitting in the 2 hole a lot so far. If he continues to hit second and ends up with 97 rbi I'd be happy with that. Estatic if he stays above .300

After Tuesday night..
Why not keep batting Freel and Hamilton one and two?  Did Narron not like scoring 11 runs?

Hey Bubbafan, whaddya think of this?

How about Gonzilla for Posada?

by Alan @ Red Reporter on Apr 20, 2007 12:41 PM EDT reply actions

I've been thinking about that for awhile now
Basically, when it became clear that Bernie could not handle CF any more, we Yankee fans had to face our team's mortality.  Bernie was the first to go, but Posada and Mo will be next.  And yes, even Jeter, whom we tend to think of as a kid.

Actually, a lot of Yankee fans have wanted to move Jeet to the outfield for awhile now.  He's got the speed, and he's great at catching fly balls (unlike A-Rod).  It would let A-Rod play SS.
