Spring Training Game Thread: Game 5 vs. Phillies

TIME: 1:05 @ Sarasota

PHILLIES PROBABLE:
                REDS PROBABLE:
???                                            Paul Wilson

Official site says Paul Wilson will be starting things off today. I don't think this one's on the radio, but I'm sure C. Trent will have updates for us. Not sure these first four games could have gone much better, Bailey's tough second inning notwithstanding.

Go Reds!

Funny you mention Hobbs
Phillies hopeful Greg Dobbs, hitting 6th today, has earned that nickname as well:

"Go talk to 'Hobbs,' '' Jimmy Rollins said after the game, equating Dobbs' start with the Roy Hobbs character played by Robert Redford in "The Natural.''

Dobbs, a former Mariners farmhand who was claimed off waivers in January, accepted the ribbing graciously.

"Any time you come into the spring not guaranteed a spot, you want to have that back-against- the-wall mentality no matter what and put you best foot forward,'' said Dobbs, who drove in two runs and scored twice.

With slightly more than a year of major league experience, Dobbs has spent most of his 6-year career in the minors, where he has hit .307. In his mind, the fact that the 28-year-old can play first base, third base, left and rightfield doesn't necessarily give him the edge over the other two candidates. Yesterday, he was at first base.

"It is an audition for me because I'm a fresh face. They have to see me and see what I can do,'' Dobbs said. "Obviously, they have scouts who have seen that I can play and liked me for whatever I was doing, but [the coaches] have to take a look at me with their own eyes and see how I go about taking at-bats and see how I play defensively at all the positions I can play. So, yes, this spring is definitely going to be a whole audition for me."

Fay says
he thinks Bellhorn makes the team.  I say WHY?  With Castro, Freel, and Conine, we don't need another infielder.  He shall now be known as Hellborn.

Here's a question:  Javy Valentin played a pretty good first base during the Caribbean Series.  Would you rather have Conine there or Javy?

Still haven't found what I'm looking for.

by Daedalus on Mar 5, 2007 12:45 PM EST reply actions

Conine vs. LLM
Conine is the right-handed yin to Hatteberg's left-handed yang.  Or is Conine the yang?  Anyway, Javy is really only effective as a left-handed bat, so platooning him with Hatteberg wouldn't make much sense.

It happened at the end of the season.  Michael rubbed too many people the wrong way when he went out of his way (again) to post about Dunn just after the Reds were eliminated.  It was poorly timed and resulted in a debate as to whether he was a real fan or was just into baiting people.  JD decided that it wasn't good for the site for him to be around.

I wasn't just me...
I think it was everyone basically determining that no matter how much you hate Adam Dunn (rightly or wrongly), you're not just a turd, but a TFC (Turd, First Class) if you post an "I hate Dunn" rant on the day the Reds are basically eliminated from contention.

I am honored, however, to have been one of the catalysts.  I do not miss him in the least.  The only thing I miss is posting as Mini Michael.  If he ever comes back, however, "say hello to my little friend."  (bonus points)

by Daedalus on Mar 5, 2007 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

In my opinion
We have plenty of good threads without getting into the same debates on a weekly basis.  I much prefer the monthly Dunn debate to the weekly Dunn debate.  And while I don't care if he gets reinstated or not, I personally lost any interest in him when he chose to do a Dunn rant the day the Reds were eliminated.
