Harang signs LTC

This is probably the second best move Wayne's made in his tenure with the Reds, right behind Pena for Arroyo. Not sure why it took so long, but great deal for the Reds. - JD

Per Trent's blog:

Aaron Harang agrees to a four-year deal with a club option for 2011. There's a press conference at 2, so I'll have more then.

UPDATE: The deal, including the fifth-year buyout, is worth $36.5 million, which when Gil Meche is getting five years for $55 million is a bargain. The press conference will be live on WLW and Reds.com

Myers comp
Someone posted about the Brett Myers deal when that was done last week, but I think this is even better.  Myers will be making 5, 8.5 and 12.  Assume that their two arb years are the same (Harang may have gotten slightly less because he earned less than Myers in '06), and Harang's last two years are 11 and 12.  Those are great values (even if Harang regresses some), esp. when you consider someone like Ted Lilly will be making the same amount and Barry Zito will be making 50% more.  Well done.

Seems like a bit too long to sign him, but Harang has a history of injury free consistency, so I say: hooray!

Great deal
Harang must really enjoy pitching in Cincy if we got him for that price! This should save enough money to lock up Arroyo next offseason and have a solid rotation for a good long time.

by teb7 on Feb 6, 2007 2:05 PM EST reply actions

Arroyo
Why do I feel like we're going to end up looking back on this offseason as a wasted opportunity to trade high? Am I the only one who feels this way?

by greg456 on Feb 6, 2007 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know
I don't think we'll regret not trading him.  Unless he gets injured this season, his value will still be high next off-season because of his low salary.  I don't expect him to be as good as he was last year, but I think he will be a little better than average, which means that at the price that he makes he's an incredible value.

by Slyde on Feb 6, 2007 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

good point
I don't think we'll look back on it and say, "Wow, he sure wasn't worth 3.5 million this year." However, his low salary does add to his value on the trade market, so I wonder what the Reds COULD get for him right now, and I wonder if whatever that is will look a lot better than Arroyo does after this year.

by greg456 on Feb 6, 2007 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

Bronson
I dunno, I would only trade Arroyo for a solid catching or shortstop prospect, and I would hope that we're not in the position to be selling this season. The NL is so terrible, 85 wins stands a fighting chance at a playoff spot, and I think a solid, durable pitcher like Arroyo will help the team more than anything we'd get in return.

by teb7 on Feb 6, 2007 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

Catching prospects
The only guys I'd consider blue chippers are Iannetta (DEN) and Saltalamacchia (ATL).

by cggarb on Feb 6, 2007 7:42 PM EST up reply actions

Salty
Saltalamacchia can definitely be had (and that's who I had in mind), given that McCann is probably going to be the best catcher in the NL for the next decade or so. But who knows, the Braves might try to convert Salty to 1B or something, which would probably kill his offensive value.

Hello and Such
Greetings All,
I've been lurking on this site for close to two years now and thought I should finally say hello to everyone.
I'm quite pleased about the Harang signing but I tend to develop anxiety anytime the Reds find a true quality starter because we historically seem to have horrible luck keeping our star pitchers healthy (O'Toole, Soto, Rijo, etc.). Here's hoping that tradition ends...
Talking about unhealthy pitching, it seems that Dave Williams will be out about 3 months with a herniated disc in his neck.

something I'd love to know
Just out of curiosity...

I wonder how many teams besides the Reds got 70 starts from their #1-2 starters. I'm guessing...zero? Maybe one or two others. Can we expect that again? Just a random thought as I just read that both Harang and Arroyo made 35 starts last year.

Innings would be interesting too. How many teams got the 460ish the Reds got from their dynamic duo? I'm not demanding an answer, just expressing further curiosity (although I know you guys will come through for me, it's just a matter of who will get it done first? the race is on).

by greg456 on Feb 6, 2007 3:17 PM EST up reply actions

still thinking out loud
It's downright scary to think how exposed our bullpen was last year despite the innings of Harang and Arroyo. Scary to think how much worse it could have been and will be this year if the duo doesn't repeat their feat.

by greg456 on Feb 6, 2007 3:30 PM EST up reply actions

Tops
Arroyo led the majors in innings and Harrang was third (Brandon Wedd was second)   They easily were the top duo from each team.
  1. Arroyo/Harrang 475 innings
  2. Smoltz/Hudson 450 innings
  3. Zito/Harren 444 innings
  4. Webb/Batista 441 innings

a couple points about this
First this is top 2 in terms of innings pitched, not ability (for instance, Ben Sheets in Milwaukee only threw 100 innings). However for the Reds the top 2 in innings are the two best pitchers.

This has been a big cause for pessimism regarding next year for me (I know this is out of place on the Harang LTC thread). If you can get 425 innings out of two starters you're usually way ahead of the game. But if the Reds did that next year that would be 50 innings less from Harang/Arroyo, innings that would e pitched by lesser pitchers.

And that's assuming Harang and Arroyo remain 1-2 in innings. If there's an injury our top two starters could be Harang and Milton combining for 400 IP. Scary thought.

by Red Menace on Feb 6, 2007 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

Atlanta
The Braves got 70 from Smoltz and Hudson... looks like the Brewers were the next highest with Doug Davis and Chris Capuano with 68. However, you said #1 and #2, Ben Sheet is easily their #1.

Pettitte and Oswalt had 67... but then again, Clemens might be considered #1 or #2

by indy on Feb 6, 2007 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

How about this one
The White Sox got 159 starts from their top 5 with only McCarthy (2) and Haeger(1) getting starts otherwise.  And all five starters had 196 or more innings.  That's over 6 innings a start.  That's the kind of starting the Reds needed for their bullpen last year.

The breakdown of the numbers
According to the Baltimore Sun of all places (this is the first place I've seen the numbers broken down):
Harang gets base salaries of $4.25 million this season, $6.75 million in 2008, $11 million in 2009 and $12.5 million in 2010. There is a club option for 2011 at $12.75 million with a $2 million buyout.

If Harang pitches 210 innings in 2010, the option increases to $13 million. If he is traded, the option becomes mutual and increases to $14 million, with a $2.5 million buyout.

by Slyde on Feb 6, 2007 5:42 PM EST reply actions

that's really good
This year he's at the club's arbitration offer. He gets a pretty small bump for his last arb year. Then it's 2 years/25.5 plus club option for his FA years.

by Red Menace on Feb 6, 2007 6:06 PM EST up reply actions

Payroll flexibility and looking ahead
Also, Harang's big bump in '09 (first year of FA) coincides nicely with the end of Griffey's and Dunn's deals.  At that point the club will have some flexibility in deciding who they want to keep and who they want to target.  EdE, BP, Ross, Deno, Coffey, Bray and some others will still be under team control.  Bruce, Votto and Bailey will still be in their pre-arb years and productive if all goes to plan (I know, a big if).  I am not writing off the next two years by any means, especially considering how weak the Central looks.  Just saying the winter of 08/09 will be pivotal.

by ken on Feb 7, 2007 9:42 AM EST up reply actions

I like what Harang is saying
by signing LT. He must think the Reds have a promising future, enough of one to forego a rumored return to the San Diego area. He's also saying that a good pitcher doesn't fear spending  a big portion of his career at GABP.

by pw on Feb 6, 2007 6:04 PM EST reply actions

Also
I think he's saying that he wants to leave a little money in the Reds's coffers for paying other players.  At least, in my mind I hope he's that prescient.

by Slyde on Feb 6, 2007 6:13 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe it's obvious
but if Harang's not afraid of GABP, the Reds should have less trouble attracting good FA pitchers.

Also, am I reading too much into this?:

"That's a good two-fifths (of a rotation)," Krivsky said. "(Kyle) Lohse and (Eric) Milton have to step up and whoever does wins the fifth spot.

"But those two guys at the top is a good start."

Are we getting two more starters? No way, right? Right?!

P.S. Forgive me if someone else has already posted this, but Homer Bailey needs a haircut, bad. He's a regular Bronson Arroyo here: http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070125/VIDEO02/301240054/1071

And a late reply: yes Slyde, I agree the humor is much better in LC, especially between Indy and dad. The heavy handed jokes in TOD are some of its worst features. But I insist that the better thrills in TOD make up for its worse humor.

Whatever
You know I'm right, just admit it.

Actually, I think our differences come down to opinion rather than quality issues.  I probably agree that TOD is a more tightly put together movie, and the action is definitely superior.  However, my preference still lies with LC, but I'm still a big fan of all 3 movies.

by Slyde on Feb 7, 2007 9:09 AM EST up reply actions

i dont understand why
no one is championing raiders of the lost ark... it's by far the best of the three.

For starters, it kicked off the whole damn thing, and you know what they say about sequels...

Also, the history lesson in rotla is far more interesting than tod, and by the time tlc came out that storyline was stale. (Hmm, so, how about in this one, the nazis try to get some sort of magical relic with profound meaning to christian culture... then when the nazis try to use it, it will backfire on them and only be beneficial to indy.)

Plus they pulled out all the stops in tlc, gave away every little secret, and it just seemed more like an amusement park ride than a movie.

And Karen Allen is leaps and bounds hotter than Kate Capshaw and Alison Doody.

And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Karen Allen??
over Kate Capshaw? no way.

Yeah
I hadn't really read your post because I was distracted by Caleb's rebuttal.  I would agree that Raiders is the best.  Menace and I disagree about which is second best, that is, which is most like kissing your sister.

if anyone asked me
and, to be clear, no one did, but if they did, i would say temple if only for that funny little kid from the goonies. "Indiahhna!"

Allen hotter than Doody?
Doody. If she's good enough for Bond, she's good enough for me. Besides, her last name is more amusing.

We need a IJ best of the trilogy poll. I'm for LC, despite TOD being the best action bang-for-the-buck a PG movie can reach. You can't beat Connery's delivery in LC.

Heh, you said Doody

I'd still take Allen.  I hate Nazi sympathizers.

Is there...
still a new one in the works?

Yep
It's due out in 2008.  Currently it's just referred to as Indiana Jones 4.  According to the link, Karen Allen is rumored to be back in this one, along with Sean Connery and Natalie Portman.

by Slyde on Feb 7, 2007 9:43 AM EST up reply actions

Indiana Jones fun fact
Harrison Ford will be older in the new movie than Sean Connery was in Last Crusade.

Great signing
It was less overall than I thought it would take, but very similar to Meyer's contract.  As I said in my diary post, once that contract was signed, this one became a no-brainer.  While it was obvious it needed done from the Reds' side, I'm ecstatic Harang committed for 5 years (only the Reds can opt out of the last year).
just....wow.

Fantastic news!!!!!!!
I couldn't wait to see what everyone was saying, and I'm glad to see the positive side overflowing.  It's what I first came to like about this sight when I first joined - and the awesome hunor and sidebits. Oh, and Slydes toolbelt is amazing!
