that was not a double
hes now officially a liability in center. He wouldn't be if he would try a little bit. i totally get that he doesnt want to get injured again, but if all we get is 70 percent griffey junior, i dont want that guy starting for the reds

He needs moved.  He is too broken down to cover the ground he needs to in center.  Ryan Freel is a much better option there defensively.

I've got to think this is shaping up to be the worst series of his career...

Javy
I would like to see Javy get some heavy PT.  He is maybe their best lefty bat when on a hot streak.  July 2005, for example - 1.257 ops, 18 rbi, 6 hr in 42 ab.  Actually he had a great 3 months there in the summeer last year...surprisingly intimidating.  I doubt he'll get more starts but I think I'd pencil him in against righties for a while.  Just a gut feeling.

by chandrathan on Aug 12, 2006 8:28 PM EDT reply actions

Another blown opportunity
These missed opportunities are killing us this year.  The inability to tack on runs has been partially responsible for our bullpen frustrations I think.  We seem to get a one or two run lead and then let up.  We need to put teams away when we have second and third, one out and Griffey, EE and Dunn due up.

by TheC on Aug 12, 2006 8:29 PM EDT reply actions

Yup.
We repeatedly blew it last night, no question.

by Ash on Aug 12, 2006 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions

we're not any worse in the clutch
than any other team. You've got to remember that even if a guy has an OBP of .400, which is really good, that means 60 percent of the time he's not getting on base. So most of the time, with 2 outs, a team isn't going to score. We've had plenty of times where we have tacked on in those situations.

by boobs on Aug 12, 2006 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

so we've got 4 more batters
til the lineup comes back aruond and nails maHALLak's slowass garbage

I was right, watch the movie!
Fans of the game will find the film a knowledgeable, impeccably accurate valentine to the national pastime; you don't have to be a baseball fan to enjoy The Rookie, but it definitely helps. (Fans may be interested to know that the real Morris has a cameo as an umpire, and Royce Clayton, Morris' first major-league strikeout victim, sportingly agreed to strike out again for the movie's recreation of the moment.)

Why?
Why can it never be easy?  Was there something wrong with a nice, easy 9th and a 9-6 victory?

i'm going to jump out of my fifth floor window...

Good win
After last night, a big win.  Thanks to EE, Phillips, Valentin, Hatteberg, Freel, Michalak.  Winning shouldn't obscure one thing, though--something must be done about the 3 spot and about outfield defense.

by HokieRed on Aug 12, 2006 10:16 PM EDT reply actions

Michalak
6 2/3 ... 3 hits, 1 ER. Give the man a freakin' medal. I'm serious.

by Ash on Aug 12, 2006 10:28 PM EDT reply actions

this thread turned out pretty decent
thanks to firewood, me, farney, Chandra and redhot holding it down during the "bad innings" while the rest of you were off hiding...

I kid, I kid. But hey, how bout that win today!

Stop the Griffey bashing
Seriously. He's on my fantasy team and he's killing me but you know he'll come around and get the Reds in the postseason.

It's great to win without your best player performing to his full capabilities.

by LastRites on Aug 12, 2006 10:34 PM EDT reply actions

We keep hoping....
He did have a 6 game hitting streak broken last night.  I think we'd all like to see him get hot and carry this team.  But...... when you see the same thing every night, poor defense, K's, bad AB's, etc, etc. It doesn't every looks like he's gonna break out of it.

He needs tomorrow off. That would give him two days in a row with the off day Monday.  Freel in center and Hollinsworthless in right tomorrow.

Stupid Griffey...
I had fun in the bad innings...Had to go away late in the game though.  Good win tonight...Pretty encouraging showing from the new pitcher.  Pretty discouraging showing from Stupid Griffey.

Smart Freel...
He had a pretty good game tonight.  With Farney leading him, there's no limit to what he can do!

Per Marc @ 10:48 pm
PHILADELPHIA -- The Reds optioned Elizardo Ramirez to Louisville after the game.

No corresponding move until tomorrow. I'd guess Belisle or maybe Shackelford.

Something I've been thinking about...
If Homer Bailey does turn out to be a star, I think he'll go down as having the coolest baseball name of all time!

However, if he flops, his name is easy headline fodder.

such fun it was.  can't wait to see it live tomorrow.

Elizardo...
Well, he has had a pretty rough week.  Kinda like Stupid Griffey.

Nice thread...
Just got to LA on vacation, so I may not be hanging out here as much the next two weeks, but I of course will check back often, since reading the thread is so much better than getting on espn.com or something.

This was a great thread.  I got heartburn just reading this.

Glad it turned out the right way, though.  EdE is a stud.  He should start every game and not get taken out for defensive purposes.

The Lizard is going to need electroconvulsive therapy after today.  His confidence must be completely gone.

How hard does Michalak really throw?  It can't be Jimmy Haynes-type slop, can it?

Don't mind me...just pitching to contact, that's all...

by Paul Householder on Aug 12, 2006 11:30 PM EDT reply actions

paul
his fastball, i shit not, hit a high of 80 mph by my count. And that was after 3 or 4 innings. His first pitch was a fastball for 78. At first I thought maybe he was just throwing changeups, but then he threw a curveball, which was so slow it rarely registered on the radar... my clock says it was about 55 mph. Yes, he's that slow.

by Farney on Aug 13, 2006 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Jimmy Haynes? Haynes? Hmm.
I put him out of my head for good. :) Couldn't compare the two if I wanted to.

You and I are on the same page when it comes to Edwin. I have no idea when it happened, but sometime over the past couple of weeks he became my favorite Red. Well, ok, he's tied with Farney and Ryan. He's a freakin' machine at the plate! 74 games, 53 RBI. 3rd highest OPS on the team behind Hattie and Dunn. Doesn't he also have the highest BA with RISP? I want to punch Jerry for taking him out of the game last night.

Elizardo is broken. I hope someone can fix him, or that he can fix himself, because he's shown flashes of brilliance - Houston a couple of weeks back, 8 IP, 0 ER against Milwaukee earlier in the season.

by Ash on Aug 13, 2006 12:08 AM EDT up reply actions

He's so slow...
That after swinging and missing, Philly hitters would ask LLM to see this guy's fastball, to which LLM replied, "Heh, that was his fastball."

He's so Slow...
That Stupid Griffey could loaf to first in the time it takes his fastball to get to the plate...

Starting Pitching
Pretty amzing that as of right now Eric Milton is our second most reliable starter, and Kyle Loshe (who was traded to be part of the bullpen) is now our # 4 starter.

Michalak
Jamie Moyer's had a lot of success not throwing much harder than Michalak.  There may be hope.
