Around SBN: Dolphins knock off Rams; get back into playoff race Bar-right-arrows

Gamethread: Game 102 vs. the Astros

TIME: 8:05 @ Minute Maid Park

ASTROS PROBABLE:
               REDS PROBABLE:
Taylor Buchholz (6-8, 5.57)       Elizardo Ramirez (3-6, 4.43)

Need a better outing from Elizardo than we saw last time, but the Reds also need to score some runs against Buchholz, a guy who hasn't been very good this year.

Go Reds!

Hey bartender...

by Clove on Jul 27, 2006 7:48 PM EDT   0 recs

stupid question...
how can a player go from batting second one night to batting eighth?
Hey bartender...

by Clove on Jul 27, 2006 7:49 PM EDT   0 recs

the same way
a guy batting over .500 for July can ride the pine every other night.

by Slyde on Jul 27, 2006 7:54 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

That's what happens
when you pick your lineup with a dart board.

by neckbeard on Jul 27, 2006 7:54 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Clayton
obp vs lefties .393
obp vs righties .289

People argue that Dunn should hit 2nd because he has a high obp percentage, wouldnt the same apply for Clayton then? (Note: I dont actually think he should hit second)

Did EdE....
Sleep with Narron's wife or what? We need all the runs we can get tonight, and we have a slumping Jr in the three hole, and our stud 3b on the bench.

by RedHotHollywood on Jul 27, 2006 7:56 PM EDT   0 recs

this is a bad sign,
i think the reds are going to keep the tradition of trading away their latin players.  i have a bad feeling that in the next few days he'll be on some other roster while we get a mediocre pitcher.
Hey bartender...

by Clove on Jul 27, 2006 8:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

That's way better
than my "did he run over Narron's dog" line...Maybe he's the new LLM. : )

by satyanaas on Jul 27, 2006 9:38 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Can't Clayton
do his whole "veteran presence" thing from the bench? Geez...

by Ash on Jul 27, 2006 8:01 PM EDT   0 recs

Ez
I still get nervous everytime he goes out.  He's pitched pretty well but you never know what you're gonna get.

by mattg on Jul 27, 2006 8:05 PM EDT   0 recs

Is there still any trade talk
that has Freel going somewhere? I think that would be a serious mistake. Just for the record.

by Ash on Jul 27, 2006 8:07 PM EDT   0 recs

i second that.
Hey bartender...

by Clove on Jul 27, 2006 8:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

RBI #68
Is that five hits in a row for Dunn?

by Ash on Jul 27, 2006 8:09 PM EDT   0 recs

JUNIOR!
Ok, so, three more of those tonight and you're back in my good graces.

by Ash on Jul 27, 2006 8:11 PM EDT   0 recs

yeah griff
nice way to start the game.  hopefully that's the end of the slump.

He's starting to hear the rumblings
c'mon Jr. get motivated!

by Slyde on Jul 27, 2006 8:12 PM EDT   0 recs

Too Late
I was going to state that slump or no slump I am pleased as punch that I know Junior isn't on the juice or "leaded" coffee.

Then he goes yard.

I was saddened to hear about the Tour de Farce winner testing positive. What a dope. I did wonder how a guy who needs his hip replaced could win that race.

Kudos Junior!

by ohiobobcat on Jul 27, 2006 8:14 PM EDT   0 recs

there's a chance that it was a false positive
i think they are running a second test to be sure, but it is sad that he did test positive.

i move we start having drinking events where competitors get drunk and compete.  It would be much more entertaining and frankly, I think the players would be more appealing to the every man.

Hey bartender...

Leisurely logging into gamecast
3-0 already

Hell of a job, Dunner and Griff.

Your move, Lizard.

Love it when
Grande starts talking about someone's or some team's man-tra. People are laughing at you, George, not with you...

by Ash on Jul 27, 2006 8:16 PM EDT   0 recs

Wow...
That's an ominous start...

by bigjas on Jul 27, 2006 8:18 PM EDT   0 recs

3 extra base hits in the first
Negated the "get em on, get em over, get em in".

Whew.

How about a "six four Yessiree" double play?

Astros are first-pitch-swingin'
their butts off tonight.

by Ash on Jul 27, 2006 8:19 PM EDT   0 recs

Grande...
may stink but you guys don't realize how lucky ya are.  i would love to watch every game but seeing as how im in a blacked out area and the Reds draw very little interest in this godforesaken place i cant watch them. unless it says wvu, marshall, any high school football game, or nascar, it doesn't exist... thank God for XM radio.

by Fadetoblack2880 on Jul 27, 2006 8:44 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I loathe WVU more...
Especially when the local CBS station would show a WVU NCAA tourny game over a UK tourny game.

Marshall =
Toothless rednecks throwing beer bottles at me.  They don't like getting beat at their house.

Jeez...
I'm watching the game on FSN, but I have my stereo system on the radio, and the radio is like 8 seconds ahead of FSN.

by bigjas on Jul 27, 2006 8:21 PM EDT   0 recs

That's why I can't do both.
As much as I'd rather listen to Marty and Steve, I can't do the whole no-tv-volume thing because of the lag.

by Ash on Jul 27, 2006 8:23 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

it would be sweet if they put a delay on XM
or a radio/tv so that you could sync up the TV w/ radio.
Hey bartender...

by Clove on Jul 27, 2006 8:24 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

TiVo does the trick
I just synch up the TiVo with the WLW feed from MLB.com.  Its sortof like "Who is George Grande?"

by beattcr on Jul 27, 2006 9:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Cubs up
2-0 on Weaver, 1st inning. "Put it on a tee," said a  guy i work with.

by boobs on Jul 27, 2006 8:21 PM EDT   0 recs

Excellent.
Good to see Weaver was merely pulling a Mays vs. the Mets when he had that decent outing last time out.

by Ash on Jul 27, 2006 8:24 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Speaking of the Cards...
It's amazing how one player can cover up so many weaknesses on that team.

by bigjas on Jul 27, 2006 8:24 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

You're right, man.
David Eckstein.  What a freakin' sparkplug.

talking about Spiezio.

FSN
Anyone else catch LaRue shooting some visine in his eyes in the dugout when the telecast came back from commercial?

Must have been a long night last night.

Clayton hit a laser shot
At least that's what it looked like on GameCast.

by TheC on Jul 27, 2006 8:27 PM EDT   0 recs

More like a seeing-eye basehit...
And way to help yourself Elizardo.

2-2
J. Encarnacion tied it up for the Cards. It's gonna take at least 10 more for the Red Birds to win.

by boobs on Jul 27, 2006 8:31 PM EDT   0 recs

Six straight hits...
Dunn is absolutely killing the ball.

I want 15 tonight.

WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!

by BLee2525 on Jul 27, 2006 8:35 PM EDT   0 recs

That's the way!
If Jr can get hot while Dunn is hot we might actually be able to get some breathing room in the wild card.

Awesome
Garner's already got the 'stache.  I think this is a fantastic idea.

by BLee2525 on Jul 27, 2006 8:55 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Buchholz done for the night.
So, we got to the starter again... hopefully tonight we can 1. hold the lead and/or 2. get to the bullpen

by Ash on Jul 27, 2006 8:44 PM EDT   0 recs

And the misplayed DP ball
comes back to haunt. 6-1.

by Ash on Jul 27, 2006 8:45 PM EDT   0 recs

EXHALE
Apparently I'm still spooked from last night's 5th inning fiasco. Nice job, Lizard.

by Ash on Jul 27, 2006 8:50 PM EDT   0 recs

Good times
Let's just avoid the meltdown inning tonight.

by Red Menace on Jul 27, 2006 9:02 PM EDT   0 recs

Let's score 20
So then the meltdown inning won't matter

by RedHotHollywood on Jul 27, 2006 9:03 PM EDT   0 recs

Gotta get to
the Astros-super-bullpen. 21 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings. Must end that now.

Great Googily Moogily
That's tehr-rib-buhl.  With Bill Walton like emphasis.

No one will trade anything for Yan, who's been dfa'd twice this season.

Steve Stewart
Anyone else listening to the radio and hear Stewart say, "Hey, Hey, Hey it's Matt Albers"? It could be the corniest thing Steve's ever said... and that is saying A LOT!!

by indy on Jul 27, 2006 9:06 PM EDT   0 recs

I disagree
That's a great line.  SS probably flubbed the line or didn't sell it hard enough, right?

Upon reflection, its more than a tad corny.  But, it had potential.

by ohiobobcat on Jul 27, 2006 9:14 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Hold on a minute...
You mean....Steve Stewart didn't put enough personality into something?

I don't believe it.

by BLee2525 on Jul 27, 2006 9:17 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Corny...
not necessarily a bad thing when it comes to Steve... he definitely adds his 'own' humor to the broadcast.

by indy on Jul 27, 2006 9:18 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

i like stewart
but he says some of the most cornball comments i've heard.  he's probably one of those people who tells a joke that he finds hilarious and gets nothing but an awkward silence.  poor fella...

Around the majors...
Conditions are getting seriously Foggy in Colorado.

by Red Menace on Jul 27, 2006 9:10 PM EDT   0 recs

I don't like this
This is eerily like last night.  We score a bunch early and then go to sleep.  Our pitcher starts getting into a groove where he's striking out everyone and then....

WHAM!!!!!

It all goes to hell.  I think I'll close my eyes until he 7th.

by TheC on Jul 27, 2006 9:16 PM EDT   0 recs

Where's Paul Householder...
when you need him?  We could sure use the powers right now before this guy jinxes it.

by BLee2525 on Jul 27, 2006 9:19 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Don't worry about me
I was trying all game yesterday to put a hex on Griffey for the better and I failed miserably. I have no effect on the outcome of this game, sadly.

by TheC on Jul 27, 2006 9:20 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It's amazing
since the trade, we are actually looking forward to the 7th!!!

by indy on Jul 27, 2006 9:20 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

They're afraid of him
Dunn on for the 7th straight time.

Billy Hatcher
what was his OB streak in the 1990 World Series?

by indy on Jul 27, 2006 9:22 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

That was my guess
obviously his streak was under MUCH more important circumstances.... I swear Dave Stewart hit him on purpose in game 4

by indy on Jul 27, 2006 9:25 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It was 9
He was 3 for 3 with a walk in the first game.  He was 4 for 4 with a walk in the second game.  He grounded into a double play in his first at bat in the third game, though he still went 2 for 5.  And then he was hit by Stewart and left the game to start game 4.

by Slyde on Jul 27, 2006 9:30 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Bad man
There is no way he homers here. Impossible.

by boobs on Jul 27, 2006 9:23 PM EDT   0 recs

Griffey walks
Can I get an Amen?

by Red Menace on Jul 27, 2006 9:23 PM EDT   0 recs

Griffey walk
I'm surprised he had an at bat that lasted enough pitches for a walk.

by Slyde on Jul 27, 2006 9:24 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Stop playing Aurilia against righties, McNarron
He's practically a guaranteed strikeout or GIDP at this point.

by Geki on Jul 27, 2006 9:25 PM EDT   0 recs

I know
If only we had a young player to develop for 3B long term.  You know, a "third baseman of the future."  Perhaps a kid flashing some serious skill with the bat.  Maybe showing some range defensively.  I'd be willing live with a few errors, you have to with a young kid, but at least somebody we could get in there to hit righties.  If only....

Guess it will have to remain a dream.

by BLee2525 on Jul 27, 2006 9:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs
