TIME: 8:05 @ Minute Maid Park

ASTROS PROBABLE:
               REDS PROBABLE:
Roger Clemens (2-3, 2.43)       Aaron Harang (10-6, 3.72)

This is kind of cool:

Red Reporter went over a million total pageviews last night

Love games against Clemens, it's such a thrill when the Reds beat a pitcher this good. Hopefully we'll get that thrill tonight.

Go Reds!

Cool, Clean, Refreshing
Cardinals shutout 7-0...at Coors field! That's what I'm talking about.

1,000,000
I'm going for the solo mill page view title...

Keep up the great work.

But Odalis Perez
Has pitched somewhat better than Joe Mays.  I would say he probably was about as good as Brandon Claussen.  He represents good value.

Aurilia at 3rd
No EE again!

by pw on Jul 25, 2006 7:34 PM EDT   0 recs

What is wrong with Aurilia at SS?
What are his defensive metrics at SS?
Don't mind me...just pitching to contact, that's all...

by Paul Householder on Jul 25, 2006 7:43 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Clayton
we've already got a scappy old guy at SS.

by Blue on Jul 25, 2006 7:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

He's only played 2 games this year
but he's been slightly below average over the last couple of years.  And so has Clayton...if you're wondering.

by Slyde on Jul 25, 2006 7:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

That's what I figured...
Which means there is even less reason not to play Aurilia at SS instead of McClayton, because you clearly gain offense.
Don't mind me...just pitching to contact, that's all...

by Paul Householder on Jul 25, 2006 7:52 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

d metrics
Most defensive metrics have Royce in the third or fourth quartile. Imagine if they took his O into consideration.

He's on his sixth team in five years, which sums it up nicely.

by ohiobobcat on Jul 25, 2006 8:05 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I guess
It's because Clayton's OPS is 583 points higher against Clemens than EdE.  That's why he's starting tonight.

by Slyde on Jul 25, 2006 8:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Oh. Silly me.

Yeah, but how many ABs has
Edwin had against Clemens? Can't be too many.

by Ash on Jul 25, 2006 8:26 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

one
he's 0 for 1.

by Slyde on Jul 25, 2006 8:27 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

LOL
SIT EDWIN! He has NO chance!

Guardado research
From BP 2006:

2003 3W 5L 41Sv 0.98WHIP 2.89ERA

2004 2W 2L 18Sv 0.99WHIP 2.78ERA

2005 2W 3L 36Sv 1.19WHIP 2.72ERA

VORPs of 22.3, 17.3, 12.7

I hadn't realized his numbers were that strong over the past three seasons.  Nice move by Kriv, which is paying huge dividends.

There is no amount of research that can support Narron benching EE for the 2nd straight game. Doofus.

by ohiobobcat on Jul 25, 2006 7:57 PM EDT   0 recs

Yeah
He struggled in 5 of his first 7 outings this season.  His ERA was 10.80 on April 24th, but since then he has kicked mondo ass.  He's been quite the pickup that El Guapo.

by Slyde on Jul 25, 2006 8:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Game 98?
If the Reds are 52-47, doesn't that make this game #100?
C'mon JD, get on the ball. ;)

by Ash on Jul 25, 2006 8:03 PM EDT   0 recs

JD
He seems to be mailing it in lately.  I think the million page views have gone to his head.

He needs to get his noggin' back in the game!  JD, we demand 100% effort day-in and day-out!

Dunn is 6-12 against Clemens?
This Clemens guy mustn't be very good.
...Make that 7-13.

by Ash on Jul 25, 2006 8:09 PM EDT   0 recs

any good?
Anyone been to Enron/Minute Maid?  It looks like an interesting place to see a game, unless you get seats in cf.

by ohiobobcat on Jul 25, 2006 8:10 PM EDT   0 recs

Remember that K, Jr
Payback. 'Round the 3rd or 4th inning.

by ohiobobcat on Jul 25, 2006 8:12 PM EDT   0 recs

Dunn
Is he the Reds next 30-30 guy? :)

by Slyde on Jul 25, 2006 8:12 PM EDT   0 recs

C'mon Hattie
An early run would be fantastic.

by Ash on Jul 25, 2006 8:13 PM EDT   0 recs

That should be enough
given how much run support Clemens usually gets

by Slyde on Jul 25, 2006 8:15 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Not to mention
Harang's 2.40 road ERA. But I'll take a few more, you know, just for the hell of it.

by Ash on Jul 25, 2006 8:17 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Aurilia single
Part of the problem with judging a player's success with RISP is that runners don't always score.  I'm not complaining, just making an observation.

by Slyde on Jul 25, 2006 8:14 PM EDT   0 recs

OK, DP
right here.

by Slyde on Jul 25, 2006 8:22 PM EDT   0 recs

Do it. Do it.

Then give Finkel some dinkel.

by ohiobobcat on Jul 25, 2006 8:26 PM EDT   0 recs

Is there any.....
way we can get Hatteberg,Phillips, and E.E. in the lineup everyday please god.

by redsgal44 on Jul 25, 2006 8:27 PM EDT   0 recs

We'd have to get our own
blackmail pictures of Narron, or steal Aurilia's.

by Ash on Jul 25, 2006 8:28 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

oops...
I meant Rich A not phillips

by redsgal44 on Jul 25, 2006 8:28 PM EDT   0 recs

Not a fan of Clayton
of course he gets a hit just as I say that. LOL.

by redsgal44 on Jul 25, 2006 8:30 PM EDT   0 recs

EE
I think it was the Enquirer yesterday that referred to Aurilia as a corner infielder. I wanted to pull my hair out. He's been a shortstop his whole career, and as lately as last year. They quoted Narron saying how he'd like to get them all in the lineup, but can't. Edwin at third, Aurilia at short, Hatte at first. There! It's not that hard.

by Red Menace on Jul 25, 2006 8:30 PM EDT   0 recs

Hmm
That's too much creativity to expect him to figure out to put three players at their natural positions.

by Slyde on Jul 25, 2006 8:33 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

All right Freel,
how about a base knock.  Let's get that run in!

by Slyde on Jul 25, 2006 8:32 PM EDT   0 recs

C'mon Dunner
8-14 against Clemens. You can do it.

by Ash on Jul 25, 2006 8:34 PM EDT   0 recs

Cmon.
Homer this guy.
Don't mind me...just pitching to contact, that's all...

by Paul Householder on Jul 25, 2006 8:35 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

He probably will now
Top of the 3rd, bases empty.

by Ash on Jul 25, 2006 8:38 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

castro
Why can't they just play aurilla at short, E.E. at third and then put Castro in the field in the late innings.

by redsgal44 on Jul 25, 2006 8:34 PM EDT   0 recs

yeah, but
I think EE would have more range at SS than Richie.  Aurilia would have the lowest defensive zone numbers in the NL. Easily.

by ohiobobcat on Jul 25, 2006 8:34 PM EDT   0 recs

Never seen that play work
RA wouldn't have been picke off, baby. Feet of stone.

by ohiobobcat on Jul 25, 2006 8:37 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Um, Royce.
Dude, that was possibly the worst move you could have made.
McClayton.

by Ash on Jul 25, 2006 8:35 PM EDT   0 recs

What happened?
Gameday just says he was caught stealing home.  Was it a straight steal?

by Slyde on Jul 25, 2006 8:38 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Freel broke for second and
the catcher bluffed to second, and I guess McClayton broke for home. If that was a planned play, then booo - Dunn is hitting over .500 against Clemens, don't run yourself out of the inning.

by Ash on Jul 25, 2006 8:43 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

When was the last time...
Any sort of running play (suicide squeeze, double steal, hit and run, run and hit, slug bunt, etc.) called by Narron ever worked?

Dodger aquire Dessens
Sending Odalis Perez (plus unknown cash to cover his contract) and two low grade prospects to the Royals. Finally there's some relief pitching that seems expensive.

by Red Menace on Jul 25, 2006 8:41 PM EDT   0 recs

Nice
Quick 8-pitch inning.  Me likey.

by Slyde on Jul 25, 2006 8:41 PM EDT   0 recs

I'm a bad fan
I simply cannot stand the fact that Royce freakin Clayton is the short-stop on my favorite team of all time.  I don't even really care what his numbers are.

by redsgal44 on Jul 25, 2006 8:43 PM EDT   0 recs

Ha!
The Brewers aquired Tony Graffanino from the Royals. With Hardy, Coskie and Weeks injured they need a crappy old infeilder. We should have sent them Clayton.

by Red Menace on Jul 25, 2006 8:48 PM EDT   0 recs

Or...
T.S.F. Juan Castro.  They are pretty much interchangeable.

Griffey
I think he need to spend A LOT more time talking to his dad about his problems at the plate.

by redsgal44 on Jul 25, 2006 8:48 PM EDT   0 recs

Clemens is already halfway gone.
He has thrown 49 pitches.  He is a 100-pitch guy.
Don't mind me...just pitching to contact, that's all...

by Paul Householder on Jul 25, 2006 8:51 PM EDT   0 recs

gotta agree
2900 hits. Played C, CF and 2B ...all decent positions defensively.

And he played his entire career for one team. He gets my vote.

by ohiobobcat on Jul 25, 2006 8:59 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I wasn't sure how to feel about it
Initially he doesn't "feel" like it to me, but I'm checking the numbers now and he probably deserves to be in. He's had a very effective decline phase.

by Red Menace on Jul 25, 2006 9:01 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Lopez
is 2 for 3 so far with 2 runs scored and a stolen base. Kearns 0 for 2 with a walk and a run scored.  Gotta root for them tonight against the giants.

by redsgal44 on Jul 25, 2006 8:53 PM EDT   0 recs

Grande loco
He says Clemens used to be stubborn like a donkey when he was younger, but now he's smart like a fox. And "determined like a donkey".

Uh. (Pause for reflection).

I'd have gone with determined like a beaver.  They really amaze me how they can construct such large dams from scraps. I like beavers. Hell, who doesn't?

Not a big fan of donkeys.

was there a missed hit and run?

Ball bounced away from Ausmus.
Hatteberg got a late break, and got thrown out by the defensive-minded catcher, Ausmus.
