Brandon Claussen (2-4, 4.96)       Jeremy Bonderman (4-2, 3.74)

Bonderman's tough, so this should be interesting. You guys pumped for interleague play?!? Whoooo! No? Ah well.

Crap
Just thought I'd get the ball rolling with our traditional Subject line.

Nice leadoff hit by Lopez!

"Crap" also describes the reaction to George Grande's voice coming through on mlb.tv.

by Brian B on May 19, 2006 7:08 PM EDT reply actions

Lineup
Lopez SS
Dunn LF
Griffey CF
Aurilla 3B
Hatteberg 1B
Kearns RF
Valentin DH
Larue C
Phillips 2B

Now that's crap. Kearns gets demoted to sixth and Dunn is moved to second. What???

I'm only watching game on MLB gamecast, so maybe it was a hit and run but WFT? Dunn doesn't even get Lopez a chance to steal with his AB.

by NCredsfan on May 19, 2006 7:17 PM EDT reply actions

according to marty
it looked as if guillen would catch it, so lopez was caught between a rock and a hard place.

and yes, that lineup is crap. i don't care how he's been doing lately, but kearns should be batting ahead of aurilia and hatteberg.

by teb7 on May 19, 2006 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions

reverse jinx works!
i'll keep trying this throughout the game!

you suck, hatteberg!

by teb7 on May 19, 2006 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Dunn
yeah, he lined the ball to the shortstop.  It looked at first that he was going to catch it, so Lopez went back.  But then Guillen dropped it, so Lopez had no chance to beat the force out.

lineup
Naw, I wouldn't consider it a demotion.  Kearns hit well down in the order and was only moved up because of the deficiencies of the other guys.

Also, Chris Welsh mentioned that the scouting report on Bonderman was such that he throws a lot of fastballs early in the count.  SO that's why they've coe out swinging.  Ironic because Aurilia took three straight balls in his at bat in the second.  And then Hatteberg took four straight balls.

Kearns then jacked a first pitch fastball for a double.  So there.

by Brian B on May 19, 2006 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Dunn 2nd?
Again Dunn at no. 2 in the lineup...
Either a walk, strikeout or HR...
Not exactly setting the stage for the heart of the order.
I would put anyone in the lineup hitting 2nd beofre I'd put Dunn there.

by jambolyajones on May 19, 2006 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

why is that bad?
Dunn has the best OBP on the team and he rarely grounds into double plays. You could do far worse at #2.

by teb7 on May 19, 2006 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

sorry
2nd best OBP to Hatteberg, who wouldn't be a bad choice for #2 based on his performance so far this year.

by teb7 on May 19, 2006 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Dunn
I think this is more of a result of things working out yesterday when Dunn batted second.  If it starts to be a problem, I think Aurilia will take over.

by Brian B on May 19, 2006 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Hatteberg BB/Kearns 2B
Ducks on the pond for the bottom of the order.

by teb7 on May 19, 2006 7:22 PM EDT reply actions

Bah
Would have preferred a base hit, but a run's a run.

by teb7 on May 19, 2006 7:25 PM EDT reply actions

Tells ya what I know
Just seemed a strange lineup. No Reds TV coverage here in the Piedmont of North Carolina. So I'm missing Chris Welsh. Once the sun goes down, I can tune in Marty.

Carson Claussen
Only 20 pitches through 2...definitely bodes well for him.

by teb7 on May 19, 2006 7:35 PM EDT reply actions

Thanks, Professor
Thanks to George Grande, those of us born yesterday now know that a pitcher's absolute fastest pitch might be actually faster than the what he can consistently throw.

Clearing the bases...and helping himself to a fielding gaffe. Game is officially busted.

New nickname for Dunn
Has anyone ever proposed Han Solo?

by teb7 on May 19, 2006 8:06 PM EDT reply actions

Dunn
It's been a while since he has hit one of those "meaningless solo homeruns."  The ones he's hit have been helpful.

by Brian B on May 19, 2006 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Whoa
Aurilia didn't like that.  Could it be revenge for the homer?

by Brian B on May 19, 2006 8:08 PM EDT reply actions

Griffey
If Freel were in there, they may be carrying him off the field on a stretcher right now.  Griffey slowed up as he approached the wall.  Freel may have had the speed and the will to get there, but it would have looked like one of those old volvo crash-tests.

by Brian B on May 19, 2006 8:20 PM EDT reply actions

If Denorfia were up...
He would have been in center, and Griffey would have been the DH.

Don't know how he and the wall would have come to a rapprochement.

But he doesn't deserve it until he gets out of this inning.

FSN Detroit
Just ran a commercial saying the Tigers are moving their young pitching to the front line to take on the invading Red Menace.

Looks like Menace is legendary even in Detroit.

I ran into a little scrape on 8 Mile a while back. I'm not allowed in Detroit anymore, and good riddance.

Welsh
He just commented on how Dunn should have scored on the line out to center by Hatteberg.  And he's right.  Total brain fart by Dunn in that inning.  You don't waste a chance to score like that.

They've really struggled with scoring runs tonight. Like it or not, I think we'd better get used to it given the results.

Maybe bring in Weathers now?

by Paul Householder on May 19, 2006 9:23 PM EDT reply actions

Coffey
They're saying that Coffey is in the pen, and Weathers is back to closer tonight.  Which is crap.

by Brian B on May 19, 2006 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Nah...
Bottom of the order has driven in six of the runs. Your prototypical No. 2 hitter should be able to hit opposite field and at least advance a runner. Not to mention he gives Javier Valentin a run for slowest Red.

by NCredsfan on May 19, 2006 9:25 PM EDT reply actions

Hit the ball to the opposite field
Dunn has done that twice tonight.  And the one he pulled left the park.

by Brian B on May 19, 2006 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Claussen
Loads the bases with two outs and retires the side.  Just another routine inning for the Pickle.

by Brian B on May 19, 2006 9:26 PM EDT reply actions

Or David Weathers.

by Paul Householder on May 19, 2006 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Claussen can finish it. No bullpen needed. Crossing fingers as I type

Joe Mays
I posted this in JD's entry from earlier today, but if you didn't hear the news yet, the Reds signed Joe Mays to a minor league deal and assigned him to Louisville.

by Brian B on May 19, 2006 9:35 PM EDT reply actions

He fits right in.
Now we have a right-handed version of Jimmy Haynes to go with the left-handed version (DWI).

bullpen
maybe they thought if they used Weathers, they would then have to use Coffey in the ninth because there wouldn't be a 5 run lead anymore.  But if they used Coffey first, they could use White or Hammond or just about anyone in the ninth.

by Brian B on May 19, 2006 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Unfortunately...
As convoluted as that was, with this bullpen, that actually makes sense.

I think games when Hammond pitches are longer, simply by virtue of the fact that his pitches take an extra three seconds to get to the plate.

. . . Chris Hammond.  This'll be interesting.

Don't the Reds carry any pitchers other than White, Weathers, Coffey, and Hammond?  Isn't Matt Belisle still on the team?  I don't even like the guy, but Belisle is better than rolling the dice with Rick White.
