Saturday Playoff Open Thread

Greg Maddux

Here's what we've got today:

1:00 - San Diego (Young) vs. St. Louis (Suppan)
4:00 - New York (Wright) vs. Detroit (Bonderman)
7:30 - New York (Trachsel) vs. Los Angeles (Maddux)

Seriously, if a team has to resort to using Steve Trachsel as a starting pitching in the playoffs, then they probably don't really deserve to be there. And I say that knowing full well that that statement would have applied to the Reds had they made it. Kyle Lohse in game three is kind of an unsettling thought, and I probably like Lohse more than most.

How're we feeling about the Oakland win? I saw it as kind of a good thing either way, both Oakland and Minnesota have alot of things to like as franchises, so I could have rooted for either one of them going forward. I think I'm going to be pulling for Oakland from here on out, whether it's against the Yankees or Tigers, although the Tigers are growing on me.

I enjoy going to that. They have a professional insulter who, for a "donation," will insult the party of your choice in old English. Pretty funny stuff. And getting Jingle Banged by the washer women is a pretty good experience.

Go Yanks!
Once the Reds are out of it, I tend to go big city - the ideal world series would be seven games between the Dodgers and Yanks. That way they draw huge audiences, the networks get their investments back, and baseball in general does well.

I remember reading in Moneyball how Billy Beane would pace the parking lot during playoff time, not doing any meddling or managing. The reason? Playoffs, especially five game playoffs, are random. A seven game series is a better test - let's hope that the networks make a bundle this year, and agree with baseball to expand the format in the future.

I really like the 5 game series.  I miss the old NLCS/ALCS format.

watching games
Actually it said he rarely watches even regular season games because they get him too worked up as well. He's said before that he watches enough to know what they need (implying that if you watch more you become biased). This isn't really a "Beanism." I think a lot of GMs don't watch as much as fans do.

Go, Tigers!
I root for any team against the $200 million team!  I guess I'm always for the underdog too - unless it was against the Big Red Machine!

I wish major league baseball would level off the incomes more of the teams - like the other pro leagues do - so the small market teams would have an equal chance to get an all-star lineup like the Yankees!

I can't believe how pathetic the Padres have been so far!  And Maddux should help extend that series.

They don't have many innings left to get it into gear. Everyone's going to be upset about the old pitching staff, but their offense has failed them and what can you do about that? That reminds me!
I've been ready all day long to go and peruse Yankee blogs...

Dodgers eliminated.
Yankees eliminated.
Padres not eliminated.

Can't complain about today's outcomes.

Yep.
All that needs to happen now is for the Deadbirds to suck it the next two games, and I will be very happy.

Can't complain
too much. Mets are still on top of things.

by sukr on Oct 8, 2006 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Eh.
The Mets will "suck it, whomever" in the World Series.

mark your words?
I hope you're right. I don't see the A's taking them though.

by sukr on Oct 8, 2006 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions

They might even suck it
In the NLCS.  Their starting pitching is a shambles.  They are lucky not to have had a game 4, or they would have had to start Oliver Perez (whom they included on their postseason roster instead of Dave Williams).

Their starters went 4.1, 6.0 and 3.1 innings in the three wins.  The three off-days are a huge plus for them, because they have basically worn their bullpen out.

I was thinking the same thing...
But I was also considering that it's a probable StL/NY NLCS match-up, and I would rather have the Mets go to the WS so much that I could probably will it into happening if I concentrate hard enough.

In that scenario
I'd root fot the Redbirds in the NLCS because I don't see them taking the A's or Tigers.

Hmmmm.
GO AMERICAN LEAGUE TEAMS!!

Yep.
Pretty much.  I think the Tigers have the best shot at winning against either the Deadbirds or the Mets.

I already have what I wanted from the Deadbirds-Padres series.  Carpenter will have to pitch twice, which means he isn't available until Game 2 (short rest) or 3 (normal rest) of the NLCS if the Deadbirds win.  Knowing TLR, he would probably pitch Carpenter on short rest, and he'll implode.  I'd love to see SD pull it out after trailing 2-0, though.  There would be Cards fans jumping from the Gateway Arch.

but kent Hrbek sends his regards to the Twins

Late to the party
But I felt really good for Sean Casey.  The rest of the Tigers too, and Detroit fans who have had an even rougher last decade and a half than we have.  Being this year's team that beat the Yankees is icing on the cake.

So go Sean, go Tigers, and boo Cardinals.

(The starting pitching in the NLCS is just going to be ludicrous).

Tommy Lasorda commercials.
I haven't seen that many of them, but the last one I saw had Joe Nuxhall climbing out from under a sink before Lasorda yells "To the TV!"  I loved it.
