Saturday Playoff Open Thread

Greg Maddux

Here's what we've got today:

1:00 - San Diego (Young) vs. St. Louis (Suppan)
4:00 - New York (Wright) vs. Detroit (Bonderman)
7:30 - New York (Trachsel) vs. Los Angeles (Maddux)

Seriously, if a team has to resort to using Steve Trachsel as a starting pitching in the playoffs, then they probably don't really deserve to be there. And I say that knowing full well that that statement would have applied to the Reds had they made it. Kyle Lohse in game three is kind of an unsettling thought, and I probably like Lohse more than most.

How're we feeling about the Oakland win? I saw it as kind of a good thing either way, both Oakland and Minnesota have alot of things to like as franchises, so I could have rooted for either one of them going forward. I think I'm going to be pulling for Oakland from here on out, whether it's against the Yankees or Tigers, although the Tigers are growing on me.

dedication
Gotta admit that takes dedication.  I heard he was is Perrysburg for the big Civil War re-enactment.  I do know he was practicing his "Cha-aaaaarge" holler 9/23.  I think he's ready for prime time.

Boom...Boom...."Go-oooooooooooooo".

Well,
I conked out in the 6th inning I think. Woke up early on the couch with a killer kink in my neck.....I want a pass on this one.

Already picked Cinci
and will they have beer at the re-enactment?

I'd do it! Swear I would.  Confession time: I have actually played Napolionics war games,.....good times with, um, interesting people.

Coed Napolionics?
What's your take on the Renaissance festival. I cant stand that "my lord" and "my lady" stuff.....although I didnt like pirate talk either until a few weeks ago.

I'm growing.

Renaissance festival
I enjoy going to that. They have a professional insulter who, for a "donation," will insult the party of your choice in old English. Pretty funny stuff. And getting Jingle Banged by the washer women is a pretty good experience.

I'm thinking the Napolionics joke
was wasted...oh well.

Never been to the Renaissance festival, although it looks like a town crier of a good time. My problem would be getting shut down by nerdy Renaissance babes because of the laptop. I can't take that twice, I'm far too fragile.

the workers
will make fun of your laptop, or camera, or anything modern. But they are buxom wenches whe desire that all have a good time.

They will not acknowledge "the wave", but its' CW that they do recognize "the clap".

Someone's getting drawn and quartered for that....

Random Soriano thought
Just read yesterday, I forget where exactly, that Washington contacted Minn. re: moving Alfonso Soriano.  Minnesota reportedly offered Joe Mays, Kyle Lohse and J.C. Romero.  All three were later DFA'd/traded anyway.

Go Yanks!
Once the Reds are out of it, I tend to go big city - the ideal world series would be seven games between the Dodgers and Yanks. That way they draw huge audiences, the networks get their investments back, and baseball in general does well.

I remember reading in Moneyball how Billy Beane would pace the parking lot during playoff time, not doing any meddling or managing. The reason? Playoffs, especially five game playoffs, are random. A seven game series is a better test - let's hope that the networks make a bundle this year, and agree with baseball to expand the format in the future.

by Billingsfan on Oct 7, 2006 12:21 PM EDT   0 recs

but...
I really like the 5 game series.  I miss the old NLCS/ALCS format.

watching games
Actually it said he rarely watches even regular season games because they get him too worked up as well. He's said before that he watches enough to know what they need (implying that if you watch more you become biased). This isn't really a "Beanism." I think a lot of GMs don't watch as much as fans do.

We never take anything for granted.  It builds character. And it tends to drive us to drink a tad more than average.

Nice field though.  Looks good on tv.

Go, Tigers!
I root for any team against the $200 million team!  I guess I'm always for the underdog too - unless it was against the Big Red Machine!

I wish major league baseball would level off the incomes more of the teams - like the other pro leagues do - so the small market teams would have an equal chance to get an all-star lineup like the Yankees!

I can't believe how pathetic the Padres have been so far!  And Maddux should help extend that series.

Didn't throw a pitch in the strikezone, Pujols only swung at 2 pitches and yet he still struck out.  That's how you beat him.

FSN Game of the Week final
27-20 good guys.  STL is losing.  NYY can be eliminated.

by Red Menace on Oct 7, 2006 4:49 PM EDT   0 recs

Arod's playoff OPS
2004 vs. Min OPS 1.213
     vs. Bos OPS  .894
2005 vs. Laa OPS  .581
2006 vs. Det OPS  .200

The trend is clear. If they make the playoffs next year expect a 0.050.

by Red Menace on Oct 7, 2006 4:51 PM EDT   0 recs

you guys arent serious, right?
basing ARod's performance on his last 8 postseason games? I've had enough arod bashing in the media to last me for quite a while. it's gotten to the point where i feel genuinely bad for him.

and it just makes me hate jeter more.

3-0 Detroit
The Tigers have a lot of "surprising" power. Monroe, Thames and Inge all 25+ homers batting 7-9. And Carlos Guillen had 19 with missed time to injury. Heck Granderson had 19 as well. Of course then there's Casey.

Yankees O
They don't have many innings left to get it into gear. Everyone's going to be upset about the old pitching staff, but their offense has failed them and what can you do about that? You can't do better than 9 all stars and a batting champ hitting 9th. I guess they can drop Arod. That should fix things.

by Red Menace on Oct 7, 2006 5:39 PM EDT   0 recs

leyland sure is doing a good job
of managing that team. What other manager could convince bonderman that a perfect game is a good idea? The guy's BRILLIANT!

Game called on account of Tiger awesomeness
Ok, I'm heading out and won't be around a computer tonight. So I'll toast the Yankees defeat now. Tigers lead 6-0 with men on 2nd and 3rd and no outs in the bottom of the 5th.

I had planned to punish my naughty liver tonight anyways, but now it shall be the annual Yankees bounced from the postseason celebration.
