Around SBN: Indy 500: 'Greatest Spectacle In Racing' Set For Sunday

Friday Open Playoff Thread

Dan Haren

Only two games today:

4:00 - Minnesota (Radke) vs. Oakland (Haren)
8:00 - New York (Johnson) vs. Detroit (Rogers)

We could have our first elimination today if the A's can manage to take out Minnesota. Seems like a pretty likely possibility just from looking at the pitching matchup.

The Yankees/Tigers matchup is the only series right now that has any kind of feeling to it. Not sure if I can really explain what I mean by that, but all the other series so far have felt pretty flat and lopsided. St. Louis is flat out dominating the Padres, which I definitely didn't see coming, and the Dodgers haven't put up much of a fight against the Mets. If it comes down to the Mets or Cardinals as the NL representative I do believe I'll have to root for the AL team, unless it's the Yankees, and then I'll just root for a meteor or something. I think it's about time to cross our fingers and hope we don't get another Subway Series.

Yeah, that's it. It's too damn late/early for me to say anything substantial.

Well... Go Tigers. There, that's better.

I think the Oakland-Minnesota series has been very exciting--close, dramatic games  with great pitching, heroes )Thomas) and goats (Hunter).

This Lasorda commercials
are generally pretty funny. Especially the one with the chick in the bathroom, and he says October is a time for everyone to root against the Yankees. But I wonder if people are getting fed up watching the Yankees every year. maybe that's why ratings drop off for the post-season.

by sukr on Oct 6, 2006 11:23 AM EDT reply actions

Braves and Yankees
Don't leave the Braves out of the equation for post-season ratings drop off.  Their streak was, 15 straight years (excluding '94)? And the Yankees, I think I heard this is their 12th consecutive post season trip.  So this generation of baseball fans have largely been treated to who is going to beat the Braves in the NL and the Yankees in the AL.

I have another East Coast bias complaint.  Why can't there be 2 playoff games on at the same time during the evenings?  I mean during the regular season there are 7 or 8 games on simultaneously every night.  But for some reason the A's and Padres are playing the mid-week afternoon games, while the Yankees and Mets get prime time.

Does Selig really think that people are watching a  Thursday 1pm game in the western time zone?  MLB postseason baseball coverage sucks.  They continue shooting themselves in the foot while the NLF is on primetime TV with games 5 nights a week and all day Sunday.  Plus, MLB's new contract let's us watch the postseason on...TBS--another smart move Selig.

Yankees suck.

i'm against two games at same time
I have been ever since '95, or whatever year that was, when the Reds and Indians were both in the playoffs. I was living in Lima, sorta equidistant from Cleve. and Cincy. I got stuck watching the Indians. I was SO ANGRY!!!!!!! Still haven't let go, as you can see. I mean, I missed BOTH HITS the Reds had in that series, and all nine of Reggie Sanders's strikeouts!

not that that has to do with anything.

I did see that
and snickered at the thought. But I promise you, any chic in Lima that looks like Rene Russo would not make it out of that town alive!

greg, technically, Ohio would have two armpits, the other being Akron. The other parts, groin, taint, etc. are assigned to other cities. But the magic of Lima is they have no clue about their classification. They're an odd bunch, like people from Yellow Springs.....only not in a hip kind of way, if you know what i mean.

i like the schedule - i sit in my office, click on my chinese pirated espn, watch the 1pm game, watch the 4pm game until it's time to get off, then go to the downstairs bar to watch the rest of it.  when that game is over, there is just enough time to go home and grab some dinner before the third game starts.

speaking of all of that - three day weekend here, and on three day weekends, they let us go at 3pm on fridays!  woohoo!

I saw Ordonez at the Detroit airport back in January or February.  He wasn't as tall as I expected - I was probably taller than he is.  Also, for being a handsome Major Leaguer, the woman with him was only so-so looking.  Some guy in a suit was there buttering him up, talking about how great of a manger Leyland was and how excited the organization is about the upcoming season.  At the time, I thought he was just blowing smoke, but I guess the guy in the suit knew more than the guy in the Ivory Tower.

It's "the movie" for my wife and I
We went to San Fran a few years ago and made sure to stop at all of the sites in the movie.  The Fog City Diner was pretty good and we danced at the Palace of the Arts.  Sadly, Vickie was not our tour guide at Alcatraz and we couldn't find the Meats of the World butcher shop.  I think that was fictional.

BTW, my favorite bit of irony about SF (not related to the movie) is The Gap store at the corner of Haight and Ashbury.  If there is anything less counter-culture than The Gap, I don't know what it is.

k-zone
I'm a big fan of the k-zone.  I don't know why they don't use it on all games.  Assuming it is accurate, it really adds a lot to the clarity of the game because the angle of the camera can make it a little foggy about whether a pitch was actually a strike.

by Slyde on Oct 6, 2006 8:43 PM EDT reply actions

QuesTec
and they still use it, as far as I know.  MLB uses it to evaluate umpires.  Hence, their disdain of it.  Nobody wants to be evaluated for the work they do.

Zumaya
Griffey's home run off of him back on May 20th was the most exciting thing I saw at a game in person this year.  Felipe's error later to end the game in the 10th was the most depressing.

Oh please, please, please
let Jeremy Bonderman pitch well tomorrow.  And please, please, please let Jared Wright be, um, Jared Wright.

I would love to watch an Oakland vs Detroit ALCS.  There will be a lot of passion there.

Shut the Kruk up
John Kruk was just going on about Wright pitching tomorrow and the fact that Wang is still in New York. He was pretty unintelligible but he suggested that the Yankees could afford to fly him out if they need him tomorrow.

I think he was trying to enunciated the argument that the Yankees should use their best pitcher tomorrow, even on a short rest to get the win. This is stupid. They need to win both games. Both games are just as important, although one might not get played. Unless he would suggest that Mussina should then pitch game 5 on short rest. In that case he's arguing the Yankees pitch 2 pitchers on short rest to avoid Jaret Wright, a few days ago they thought was good enough to be in their playoff rotation.

Bonderman...
I love this kid.  He's absolutely phenomenal.  Every time I see him, his fastball is 95 on the black, and his slider is making people look stupid.  Every once in a while, he'll give up a 3IP, 7ER start (like he did against the Reds), but forget about that tomorrow.  He'll be nails.

Note: If you're in a fantasy league with me next year, you better get Bonderman quick.  He'll be gone by round 4, guaranteed.

That has got to be the
worst/best movie I have ever seen... if that makes any sense.

Yeah, it's really late for this
But a tip of the cap to Brad Radke for going out and throwing.  I'm always a sucker for "player competes in big game while ridiculously hurt."  It's a shame that he couldn't have gotten a victory like Curt Schilling or Kirk Gibson or Willis Reed, but still a gutty effort from him.  I will know think back to all the games that Griffey sat with an owie on his toe in the midst of a playoff race, and slam my head repeatedly into the wall.

Absolutely...
Always been a Brad Radke fan.  He was always a guy who got by on guile and toughness, and this last start, despite the outcome, was an homage to that spirit.  Torn labrum, stress fracture in the arm, and Radke takes the ball.  You have to admire the guts and respect the career that this guy had.
