Is Narron really that bad?

Found this article on the importance of managers in relation to wins and found it interesting.

http://journals.aol.com/sportsmediaguy/SportsMediaReview/entries/2006/10/04/do-managers-matter/231

For the record I don't like Narron... but this article makes the point that he might be irrelevant anyways.

More, more, more ....... how do you like it?

wow
the voice of reason is... Dan LeBatard. That surprises me.

I shoudl note, though, that while I strongly believe managers in baseball have very little impat on a team, I do think that football and basketball coaches are very important. Those sports rely on different schemes and cohesive execution; baseball doesnt. The sport is pretty unique, in my opinion, in how little the manager matters.

I would also point out that batting coaches and pitching coaches have a lot more impact than managers. They're actually micromanaging the team, working out kinks in guys' swings and helping pitchers with their mechanics. A manager is simply a personnel supervisor.

LeBatard
LeBatard is actually really good. It's a secret that's starting to get out. Id' put him with Joe Posnanski and Brian O'Neill.

worthwhile, and seldom raised question?
Sorry this guy is on the caboose, but I'm not a Saber dude and I've seen this question raised more often than I care to see it. It's alomst , IMHO, like what a writer writes about when he's got nothing.

I see the article as trying to say that "if managers do indeed have an impact, it's minimal and can only cost games. So be carefull, nobody knows this, but, he's not really doing anything productive."

Am I to assume that as soon as the secret is out, they'll do away with them?

people who write these things
could benefit from opening their eyes every once in awhile and thinking for themselves instead of using established, rehashed lines of thinking.  sure, over the course of a long season, most of the time, a manager doesn't matter much, but when you lose a playoff spot by 4 games, the manager has a huge impact, because if he had not put in the worst pitcher to blow leads four times, the whole season could be different.

two words: ryan franklin.

two more words: royce clayton.

two more words: jerry morron.

two more words:  fire chambliss.

two more words:  yankees suck.

At this point
Would anyone think that we got a hell of a deal if we just got someone to take LaRue and get his salary off the books and get nothing in return?

That would be a miracle.  Think of the starter we could get at his salary.

I can think of one starter we could get...
With that kind of money:  Kyle Lohse(r).

To evaluate this argument...
I'm going back over chapter 4.3 of Baseball Prospectus' BBBTN (Caleb, you can do this with me... it's page 139. Like homework!)

I will report back as soon as I'm finished.

I believe...
that if you're going to blame narron for playing clayton and franklin you've gotta blame krivsky for picking up two pieces of dead weight.

that said, i think the manager's most important job is to put the best players on the field... which narron obviously did not do.

conclussion: THEY BOTH SUCK

maybe krivsky can wow us with a big off-season

EOB
Equal opportunity blamer.

I agree, but I'm harder now on Krivs than most here.  Quite correctly, they are willing to see what he does for the next few months before they pass complete judgement. I'm trying to learn the ways of the force, but I'm still too impatient.

The Kriv
My belief with Krivsky is that you have to give him a full off-season before you can judge his abilities.  In-season trading is more filling holes than building a team.  I'll forgive him for failing to fill holes on the fly that he didn't create.  However, I think that any moves he makes this off-season can be considered Wayne putting together HIS team.  From here on out, he is responsible for every man on the roster.  Hopefully he can build success on top of what's there.

I now plan to sit back and critique from the safety of my ivory tower.  Toodles!

I'm just saying
O'Brien. We cut him slack for far to long. I'll follow your lead, but it won't be all that far. 9 months or so ought to give us a clue?

by sukr on Oct 5, 2006 6:26 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

No, I'm just saying
that he was hired in February, just before Spring Training.  There weren't a lot of options out there, but he did pretty well early on.  When push came to shove, he got pushed and shoved a bit.  Now let's see if he can pick himself up, dust himself off, and build something when time isn't such an enemy.

If he hasn't done it by next February, then we will burn him as clearly he is a witch!

This was my opinion before...
And I still stand by it:

Glad I could be a part of that...
This makes me think:

What the hell is Kriv going to pull off between now and April?

Part of me thinks he's going to find a couple more Arroyos and BPs. The other part is afraid that we're going to be overrun by Ryan Franklins and Royce McClaytons come Opening Day.

I'm kinda frightened.

An ABE!...lol
I'm not sure how I missed this, must have been reloading the vodka. But this should have made it to the wiki......of course half the stuff here should have. Man this was fun.

Yep.
A.B.E., kind of like O.B.E., but not quite as good.
