Trivia Thread

Okay, I had an idea and I'm going to give it a shot and see how it goes.

This is going to be the Trivia Diary.  The trivia questions must be baseball related, and preferably Reds related in some way.  The way I envision this working is that someone will ask a trivia question and whoever answers it correctly will get to ask the next one.  There will be a 24 hour period after each question, and when that 24 hour period is up then the answer will have to be given by the questioner.

I might keep track of the number of times Red Reporter readers are stumped and have a leader board of some sort of who asks the hardest questions (hardest being those that make it 24 hours without a correct answer).

So I'm going to start this off.

The Reds have not traded with the Minnesota Twins in nearly a decade.  Who did the Reds trade away in their last deal with the Twins and who did they receive?

Reds-Twins Trade Answer
June 8, 1995: Minnesota Twins traded David McCarty to Cincinnati Reds in exchange for John Courtright

McCarty was sent to Indianapolis where he put up good numbers (.336/.403/.593) in 37 games before being part of the package that sent Deion Sanders to San Francisco for Mark Portugal, Darren Lewis, and Dave Burba 10 days before the trading deadline.

Courtright was a left-handed pitcher that only pitched one inning in the Majors (hello, Moonlite Graham).  He went 3-7 with a 6.80 ERA with the Twins AAA Salt Lake team in 1995, but was out of baseball after that season.

Boy, I hope that is the right answer, or I just did WAY too much research.

Correct
This is the answer I have from my Reds media guide.  It's probable that Fritz is correct with that minor league deal and the media guide just doesn't count minor league trades, but I'm going to give it to Slyde.  I'll make sure to be a little more clear the next time I ask a question.

my attempt:
The Reds sent Armando Benitez, a #4 (#65 overall) pick and a #5 (#99 overall) pick, and got three picks: the Twins' #1, #3, #4, and #5 picks, on Feb. 18, 1998.  Not that I can tell you offhand who they picked with those picks, but that's a different question...

Today's Question
One player has been on the losing end of 3 perfect games.  Name him.

Bonus Points if you can give the pitchers that he faced on those days and the team that he was on.

Double bonus points for his OPS in those games. :)

by Slyde on Apr 27, 2005 2:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

okay, a real attempt:
I may be missing the minor-league loophole here, but I do know that Alfredo Griffin played shortstop on three teams that lost in perfect games:
  • with the Blue Jays, May 15, 1981, facing Len Barker and the Indians
  • with the Dodgers, September 16, 1988, facing Tom Browning and the Reds
  • and again with the Dodgers July 28, 1991, this time facing Dennis Martinez and the Expos.

I'll leave OPS as an exercise for the reader.  However, also of note: in the 1991 game, the two runs that the Expos scored both came as a result of Griffin errors.  Dennis Martinez actually led off an inning by reaching base on a Griffin error, then scored on a triple; that baserunner then scored as a result of a Griffin error.  After going 0-for-2, Griffin was pulled in favor of a pinch hitter, Stan Javier, who of course also failed to reach base.

by Gray on Apr 27, 2005 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bing!
Correctumundo!

For those that are interested in these things, you can check out the boxscores here:

May 15, 1981 - Len Barker's perfect game
September 16, 1988 - Tom Browning's perfect game
July 28, 1991 - El Presidente's perfect game

A slight correction: Dave Martinez was actually the Martinez that reached on the first Griffin error.  The triple was hit by Larry Kenneth Robert Walker who later scored on another Griffin error on a ball hit by Ron Hassey.

And now you know the rest of the story.

The floor is yours, Gray.

Pinch Hitting for Gray
Gray has gone a day without asking a question so I'm going to pop in for him.  This is what'll happen if people go too long without asking their question.

Who have the Reds made more deals with than any other team in baseball?  They've made 78 deals (involving major leaguers I'm assuming) with the franchise in question.  The next most traded with team has seen 59 trades made.

My Guess
I'm not 100% sure, but i'm pretty sure that the most trades in Reds history have been with the New York Yankees.  The second most is Philadelphia if I am not mistaken.

It's not the Yankees or Red Sox.

More info
The Reds have made 19 trades with the Red Sox and 35 with the Yankees.  It's also not the Phillies but they're up there.  The Reds have made 52 deals with Philadelphia.

MVP
At one time this was one of the hardest trivia questions I had ever heard. Give it a try with out the help of Google or MLB.com.

Prior to the 1990's there had been 9 players in the history of baseball who had won back-to-back Most Valuable Player awards and they represent ever position on the field, 1 pitcher, 1 catcher, 1 1st baseman, 1 2nd baseman, 1 shortstop, 1 3rd baseman and 3 outfielders. Name them. Good Luck.

MVP
Let me take a stab at this:

P - Hal Newhouser
C - Roy Campanella
1B - Jimmie Foxx
2B - Little Joe
3B - Mike Schmidt
SS - Ernie Banks
OF - Mickey Mantle
OF - Roger Maris
OF - Dale Murphy

The only one I'm not certain about is catcher.

Today's Question:
Two parts:
  1. One active MLB player was born on the date of the first game played in Riverfront Stadium.  Who was this player?
  2. What teammate of this player (on his first major league team) later signed as a free agent with the Reds, who traded him in 1998 to the Dodgers for Paul Konerko and Dennys Reyes?

perhaps some of the story?
Well, it was apparently the last day of the season; he started the first game of a doubleheader, and he was 29.

The Giants weren't exactly tearing it up that year, either--they finished 78-74, with the second game of the doubleheader called a tie.

I don't think this game was his MLB debut, though.  Judging from his career line, he pitched a total of 18 innings in two games.  Since the last game of the season (the only game after his CG shutout) was a tie that ended 2-2 and he allowed 4 ER in his other appearance, he obviously didn't pitch in that game, so I presume that he pitched relief in an earlier game, and didn't do too well, at that (4 ER in 5 IP).  Oh, that link actually gives his actual debut: August 25, 1945.

September 30th would have been his first career start, though.  But then, he was 29, the season ended, the war had just ended; maybe his accomplishment was more of an aberration coming at the end of the 1945 season, anyway.

Are you asking for someone that came up with the Reds as a fielder and then as a pitcher?  I know that Bucky Walters came up as an infielder with the Braves but then pitched for 10+ years with the Reds.  That would be my guess.

Jack Armstrong won a total of 25 games for the Reds, but only started 72 of 79 career appearances.  I'm in process of researching if Jack ever won a game in relief.

Brett Tomko won 29 games in his Reds career, and was the starting pitcher in 79 of his 89 career apperances as a Red.
