Alfredo Simon Must Be Traded

If the Cincinnati Reds were in contention for a playoff spot, Alfredo Simon would be one of the most feel-good stories of the 2014 baseball season.

Instead, he is the second, maybe third, best pitcher on a lousy team. And his trade value will never be higher. And the Reds need for a third top pitcher has never been lower...

The Reds are not contending. Injuries have obliterated a season that showed a hint of promise. And as tough as that is to accept, it's time for Reds management to do so. The Reds currently have the 14th best farm system in the major leagues, according to SB Nation's Minor League Ball. The link offers Robert Stephenson and Jesse Winker, two great talents to have in the system. The void still exists.

As a Reds fan, I had become used to the idea of the Reds having a deep farm system, and they were before the Mat Latos deal.

That's not to knock the Latos deal, it's just what happened.

Now, not so much. And we continually see how shallow this organization is as the big league team hustles out Donald Lutz-- Is this unfair?

And so far this year we have seen that pitchers, and not necessarily big-name, got-to-have stars, are bringing in a pretty penny in trade value.

Take a look at Jeff Samardzija, who reeled in a couple top prospects for the Cubs. Is he a good pitcher? YES! Is he one of the best pitchers in the league, ehhh.

Now take a look at what happened today. The St. Louis Cardinals traded away one of their best prospects for Justin Masterson. Masterson has been a beast in the past, but he is not a top pitcher in the league.

Alfredo Simon can help this franchise by leaving. He deserves to compete on a team that is in position to bring home a championship. The Reds are not the team in 2014.
