Organizational Injury Report 6/9/14 - Votto and Latos Nearing Returns

The offense needs you back, Joey. - Andy Lyons

Latos to make one more rehab start, Votto on rehab assignment, plus minor league injury news

The last few weeks have been slow on injury news, at least at the major league level.  Mat Latos was removed early in his previous rehab start (5 innings and only 67 pitches) due to cramping in his calf.  As the Reds were hoping to build his pitch count to about 90 in that start, it was decided to keep Mat down for one more start to do just that before recalling him.  Latos himself is not too pleased with that decision, but this always seems to be the way with pro athletes.  From the organization's perspective, better to make sure players are fully healthy and ready before returning, so I applaud the decision.

Joey Votto has also begun minor league rehab games for AAA.  Apparently his minor quad strain was rather more serious than expected, as he was supposed to miss the minimum 15 days but is now at 25.  On the opposite end of the Jay Bruce/Mat Latos/Tony Cingrani/Sean Marshall spectrum of being activated early or complaining about it if not, Votto has been taking some criticism for trying to honestly assess his readiness to return.  Votto and the Reds will evaluate on a game-by-game basis to decide when he might return, and it should not be much longer.  The Reds offense has struggled mightily in Joey's absence - and that might even be an understatement - hitting .223/.269/.353 with 39 walks to 194 strikeouts since he went on the DL.  Amazingly, the Reds have played .500 baseball in those 22 games.  That's quite a credit to the pitching, including a bullpen that has been on a very solid run of righting the ship.

In minor league news, at AAA Louisville, corner infielder Mike Costanzo was activated from the 7-day DL on May 28 after missing 9 days.  OF Ryan LaMarre went on the DL on May 28 for a lower leg stress fracture.  Starting pitchers Chad Reineke and Matt Maloney were both released from the organization.

At A- Dayton, OF Jon Matthews was activated on May 31 after the minimum 7 days on the DL.  3B Tanner Rahier was activated on June 3 after missing only 9 days with a broken finger.  OF Jeff Gelalich was placed on the DL on May 31 with a bruised foot, 1B Sean Buckley went back on the DL on June 3 with a strained oblique, and RP Pedro Diaz went on the DL on June 8.  SS Humberto Valor was released from the organization.
