The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game
Roger Bernadina just continues to rake, and his March just might be the silver lining to a Spring Training that has otherwise been fraught with a touch of grey. There have been injuries up and down the lineup, the roster now faces a crunch, the cow is giving kerosene, and the Winter of discontent has given way to a Spring of attrition, but in the midst of it all, Bernadina has been busy convincing the Reds' brass that he's a deserving member of a roster spot in the big leagues again. Today's effort surely helped his cause, as he homered in the Top of the 1st and added another RBI single to his cache, and aside from a few issues in RF courtesy of the winds and the wall, he did nothing but augment his case to be a reserve OF in Skip Schumaker's stead. While we've all been focused on the injury-induced doom and gloom that the last few weeks have ushered, perhaps it's time to begin to celebrate what good performances we've been privy to.
Honorable Mentions are due to: Kris Negron, who like Bernadina continued to stake his claim to a 25-man spot with a three-hit day; Brandon Phillips, who thumped his third HR in his last 4 games; Billy Hamilton, who went 2 for 4 with a triple and a run scored; Manny Parra, who pitched a clean inning while striking out 2; and Brayan Pena, who had a 2-hit day that featured a NERT'd double.
- Negron singled with one out, Phillips followed with a walk, and two batters later, Bernadina held his head back like a nose bleed coming through. Reds led, 3-0.
