Farmers Only: Wangerpalooza 2013

Jesse Winker rips, and so do the Bakersfield Blaze.

  • Louisville was scalped by the Indians, 9-1. The only whimper from the Bats was a solo Shakira from Denis "My" Phipps "Don't Lie" who was 3-4 on the day. Billy Hamilton also had a solid game, going 3-5 (all singles) with his 67th larceny, and an outfield assist! Chad Reineke gave up 4 in 5 innings, and our old friend Jose Arredondo gave up just as many in 1/3 of an inning. His ERA is up to 5.96 on the year. Yikes. Rough day, all around. Up next: Chad Rogers (4-2, 3.32) squares off against Columbus at 7:05.
  • Pensacola snuffed out the Suns, 2-0, behind the strong right arm of Jon Moscot, who went 7 scoreless innings, giving up just 4 hits and a walk with 5 strikeouts. He's had a rough go of it this year, but there's a reason he's appeared at the tail end of a couple top prospect lists in the past. He also hit a triple to help himself out! He should give some props to his defense, including Yorman Rodriguez, who shot an absolute laser to nail a runner at the plate. Devin "Willy" Lohman was 2-4, and Ryan LaMarre was 1-2 with a walk and his 20th steal of the year. Some guy named Taco Bell got the save. Wait, no, sorry, Trevor Bell. Up next: Thirsty Thursday against the Suns, with Danny Renken (5-8, 3.58) taking the bump.
  • Bakersfield jumped ahead early and held on for the win against Stockton, 9-5. Early honk jobs from Juan Duran, Junior Arias, and Kyle Waldrop set the pace for the Blaze, and the 1 through 7 hitters all reached base multiple times. Fabian "Action Movie Villain" Williamson struck out 9 in 4.1 innings, and the pitching was spotless save for Ben Klimesh's disastrous one-third of an inning, in which he allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 2 hits and 3 walks. Up next: James "Jim Al" Allen (8-9, 4.73) takes on the Ports at 10:05.
  • Dayton toppled the Captains, 3-2, thanks in large part to Jesse Winker. Uncle Jesse ripped a 3-run shot in the 8th to give the Dragons the lead for good, his only hit of the night. He may not quite be tearing the cover off the ball recently, but he's certainly no stranger to hitting well in clutch situations. Oh, and it was his 16th HR of the year. Many scouts didn't think he'd hit for much power, but here we are. You can listen to a post-game interview with Winker here, during which he proceeds to impress the hell out of me with his poise and intelligence. Sal "Gaskets" Romano motored along through 6 innings, allowing just 1 run on 7 hits and a walk, striking out 3. Up next: Ismael Guillon (4-7, 5.95) tries to keep his ERA under 6 against Lake County at 7.
  • Billings lost a squeaker to the Voyagers, 2-1. Ronald Bueno was pretty much the only one who wasn't horseshit, going 2-3 with a three-bagger, although Jose Ortiz-BearPig walked and had a double. Up next: Ben Lively (0-2, 0.38) and his improbable record face Great Falls at 9:05. Seriously, how can you be 0-2 with a 0.38 ERA?!? Pitcher wins and losses, ladies and gentlemen.
  • The AZL Reds were 5-hit, all singles, falling to the Little Giants 4-2. Aristides "Nuts" Aquino had 2 of them, and that's about all there is to say about that. Hmm. The AZL Giants CF is named Johneshwy Fargas, which pretty much has to be a mistake. Up next: More Baby Giants action at 10.
