On this day in 1943, former Reds manager Lou Piniella was born in Tampa, FL. Piniella is not in the Reds Hall of Fame, and I was going to look into his case when I noticed that Pat Moran isn't in the team Hall of Fame either. Moran managed the 1919 Reds to the World Series title, and he also led the team to two second place finishes when that was a more impressive accomplishment than it is now. The other three managers who have won pennants with the Reds are in the team's Hall of Fame. I assume that Dusty Baker has a good chance to make the Reds Hall of Fame, with or without a pennant.

On this day in 1952, the Reds traded right-hander Ewell "The Whip" Blackwell to the Yankees for a package of four players and cash. Blackwell didn't have many innings left in his arm, and only one of the four players -- Jim Greengrass -- amounted to much of anything for the Reds. Cincinnati's acquisition of $35,000 may have been the best thing about the trade.

On this day in 1976, Dave Concepcion singled to left-center field to drive in two runs in the bottom of the ninth to give the Reds an 8-7 win over the Phillies.

On this day in 1980, former Red Ryan Madson was born in Long Beach, CA. Madson hasn't thrown a pitch in a major league game since 2011 and has pitched only one inning in A-ball this season. The Angels released him earlier this month, and he's currently a free agent. Madson could receive another chance if he ever recovers from his elbow injury, but I think his days as a productive player are probably finished.
