Organizational Injury Report - 8/25 Broxton is Done for the Year

Get healthy for next year, Broxton - USA TODAY Sports

Broxton's surgery ends his season, Cingrani moves to DL, plus minor league updates

Jonathan Broxton had surgery on August 23, ending his season with the Reds, which unfortunately did not go at all as the Reds must have envisioned the first year of his 3-year, $21 million deal would go. He provided the Reds 30 subpar innings this season. It's a stretch to say they have hamstrung the Reds in terms of budget or acquisitions, but along with Sean Marshall's 7 total innings this year, the multi-year bullpen contracts from the Reds have not been wise investments as it turns out. Broxton was moved to the 60-day DL to allow for the necessary roster moves for Greg Reynolds to take Tony Cingrani's place in the rotation for his next two starts.

Cingrani, who left his last start early due to lower back stiffness, has been placed on the 15-day DL retroactive to August 21. Cingrani has apparently been dealing with discomfort for several starts but did not want to be removed from the rotation. He says he already feels much better, and if it were up to him, he wouldn't miss any starts, but the Reds are taking the cautious approach. It is believed Cingrani will miss no more time than the minimum, meaning a return on September 5. As mentioned, Greg Reynolds will take his rotation spot until that time. As a silver lining, this should preclude any major innings jump for Cingrani, even if he pitches deep in the postseason as a starter.

Both Johnny Cueto and Sean Marshall threw long toss on August 23 without issues. This is good news, but still represents a long way from being in game shape, especially for Cueto as a SP. Cueto has been sidelined about two months, and Marshall a little over three months.

In the minor leagues, at AAA Louisville, RP Kanekoa Texeira returned from the 7-day DL on August 19 after missing only the minimum with lower back tightness. SP Chad Reineke was placed on the 7-day DL August 19 with an unlisted injury. C Matt Kennelly returned on August 24 after missing 10 days, and Yovan Gonzalez was demoted in a corresponding roster move.

In AA Pensacola, OF Donald Lutz returned from a fractured finger on August 23, missing only 11 days. At A- Dayton, SP Drew Cisco was placed on the 7-day DL with a strained right shoulder on August 23. The 21-year-old prospect with otherwordly control was having a solid return season from Tommy John surgery. The current state of injury affairs can be checked via the Reds Injury List.
