Farmers Only: In Which the Reds Don't Lose

The Casserole at work - NICK FALZERANO

Some encouraging things happened, I suppose.

  • Louisville had their game rained out by the tears of a thousand Reds fans. They'll bang out a doubleheader against Syracuse tomorrow, first game starting at a surprisingly late 6:05. Jonathan Broxton will start one of the games and pitch an inning, and I believe Yohan Pino (3-5, 2.94) will get the nod either after Broxton, or as the starter in Game 2.
  • Pensacola had their 2 game streak of holding their opponents scoreless snapped, falling to Mobile 3-2. Thanks, Tim Crabbama. The Hermit gave up 3 runs on 8 hits in 6 innings of work, striking out 4 and walking 3, and Loek Van Very Tall escaped a bases loaded jam in the ninth, but the offense wasn't quite enough (sound familiar?). Travis Mattair capped off a strong July with a solo bullwinkle–his only homer of the month–and Corey Wimberley added two hits in two times up after a double switch to pace the mostly quiet offense. Up next: The Wahoos can take the series with a win, turning to Josh "Probably the Founder of Mormonism or Something" Smith (8-8, 3.86).
  • Bakersfield was digging the thin desert air tonight, doinking 3 wangers en route to an 8-6 win over Modesto. The long balls came from Kyle Waldrop (his 17th), Steve Selsky (12th), and Juan Duran (his 10th), the latter's being a 3-run shot. Damn, Kyle Waldrop has 17 bombs already? He's sporting a .202 ISO on the season, and a .298 OBP. Huh. Shane Dyer got the win, but gave up 4 in 6 innings. Up next: Org soldier Mike Dennhardt (6-8, 4.92) faces the Nuts at 10:30.
  • Dayton got another solid outing from Nick Travieso, beating the Hot Rods 6-2 for their fourth straight double-yoo. Nicholas Naughty went 5 2/3, allowing just 1 run on 7 hits and 2 walks. He struck out 4 on the night. Sammy "Bojangles" Diaz was 2-4 with a solo job, and Beau "Discovery Channel" Amaral was 2-5 with a ribeye. In his first appearance above rookie ball, Phil Ervin was 0-3 with a clutch bases-loaded walk as the DH. Up next: Amir Garrett (0-1, 5.63) aims to further forget about basketball against Bowling Green at 7.
  • Billings had the night off. They'll face Great Falls at 9, sending Austin Salter (0-0, 3.26) to the mound.
  • AZL Reds were also off. The Dodgerinhos host the kids at 10.
