This Day in Reds History: Wire-to-wire Reds debut

Jim McIsaac

Spoiler alert: They won.

On this day in 1956, the Redlegs traded rightfielder Bob Hazle and a player to be named later to the Milwaukee Braves for first baseman George Crowe. Cincinnati completed the trade in May by sending pitcher Corky Valentine to the Braves.

On this day in 1965, former Red Hal Morris was born in Fort Rucker, AL. Morris spent nine years and part of a 10th in Cincinnati, but he is best known for his role as a key reserve and later the starting first baseman on the 1990 World Series championship team. He slashed .340/.381/.498 (136 OPS+) in over 300 plate appearances for the wire-to-wire Reds. Morris' improved play down the stretch forced Todd Benzinger (.253/.291/.340, 70 OPS+, woof) out of the lineup providing Cincinnati with a potent bat on a team not known for its offense.

On this day in 1990, the wire-to-wire Reds opened up the season with an 8-4 win in extra innings in Houston. Mariano Duncan homered while Paul O'Neill swiped two bags. Barry Larkin's three-run triple in the 11th inning broke the game open for the Reds. (Birthday boy Hal Morris scored on the play.) Eric Davis singled in Larkin to provide another insurance run. All three Nasty Boys pitched (each threw more than one inning), and Randy Myers earned the win. Houston first baseman Glenn Davis tied the big league record for times hit by pitch in a game when Cincinnati pitchers plunked him three times. I'm not sure why the Reds opened on the road in 1990, which was only the third time the team had done so since 1876. Does anyone know the reason?

EDIT: Thanks to ken for pointing out that there was a lockout prior to the 1990 season. Opening Day was pushed back a week as a result.
