Last week, the good people at Louisville's 1450 The Sports Buzz were kind enough to reach out to us about appearing on the station's Afternoon Drive program. On Wednesday the 17th, the show called Kerry (AC Slider) to talk about the Reds. Kerry's appearance went so well that The Sports Buzz is planning on talking to a Red Reporter writer every week on Wednesday. Several writers have already volunteered to talk Reds baseball on the Afternoon Drive, so you'll be able to hear a variety of voices from the site. The Sports Buzz has scheduled us to appear in the three o'clock hour. We'll recap our conversations with hosts Trevor Kelsey and Perrin Johnson here for those who can't listen live.
Trevor kicked off his chat with Kerry by previewing the ending to last week's odd game between the Phillies and the Reds, which the umpires halted in the bottom of the ninth on Tuesday night. Kerry hoped for a Joey Votto walk off home run to end the game when it finally resumed Wednesday evening. The actual ending to the game was almost as good. Kerry and Trevor covered a wide range of topics from Joey Votto's propensity for walking to Shin-Soo Choo's incredible play so far this season.
Their conversation also touched upon the progression of Homer Bailey and the role of Aroldis Chapman, which are always controversial issues with Reds fans. Last year was the first time that Bailey put together an entire season of the quality pitching we expected when the Reds drafted him in 2004. Hopefully, Bailey's breakout is for real, and that's another area to watch as the season progresses. You can check out the entirety of Kerry's time on the Afternoon Drive here.
I went on the show yesterday to talk with Trevor about how the last week unfolded for the Reds. We discussed the effect of Cincinnati's plethora of extra innings games on the bullpen. The heavy load on the relief pitchers in the first couple of weeks certainly contributed to the Reds' difficulties on the road so far this season. I wouldn't worry too much about the 1-5 away record though as six games doesn't tell us much about a team, and the bullpen was out of sorts during the series in St. Louis. The return of Sean Marshall will do wonders for the Reds' relief pitching as well.
We also discussed the recent struggles of Todd Frazier and Zack Cozart, but I don't think there's any reason to worry about either of these guys right now. There's really not a reason to worry about any part of the team yet. Trevor also raised the possibility of the Reds re-signing Choo. I have no idea how Choo will play the rest of the season and what the market for him will look like this offseason, but I think the Reds should look into an extension. I'm skeptical that Cincinnati could afford to keep him, but if the Reds could extend Choo for something similar to the Michael Bourn contract (4/$48M) then the team should consider such a deal. You can listen to the complete episode of the show here.
Thank you to producer David Yates, host Trevor Kelsey, and everyone at 1450 The Sports Buzz for having Kerry and me on the show. The station offers live streaming and podcasts of its shows at 1450TheSportsBuzz.com.
