Mathew Adam Latos was born on December 9, 1987. Mat attended Coconut Creek High School in Broward County, Florida. Other notable alumni of Coconut Creek High School include former major leaguer Brad Eldred.
- For his walkup music, Latos has not only used screamo band AFI, but also British dubstep performers the Foreign Beggars. In case you were wondering, Mat does not include "the drop" in his entrance.

- The feeling of hatred Mat has for The City By The Bay is likely mutual with San Francisco broadcasters. Once during batting practice, Mat Latos threw a ball out of the ball park and it landed on Giants' announcer Dave Flemming's Honda Civic, shattering the windshield.
- Before signing with the Padres, Mat spent a year pitching for Broward College, a two-year school that spawned Nancy Valen, otherwise known as "Ginger" in Porky's Revenge.
