This Day in Reds History: Tragedy strikes the team

Dernell Stenson - http://chronicle.augusta.com

Ten years ago today, Dernell Stenson was murdered in Arizona.

On this day in 1867, former Red Ice Box Chamberlain was born in Buffalo, NY. Like fellow Red Tony Mullane, Chamberlain switched between pitching right- and left-handed on at least one occasion.

On this day in 1969, the Reds sent right-hander George Culver to the Cardinals in exchange for righty Ray Washburn. This is an odd trade from a distance of forty-four years. Culver and Washburn were similar players though Culver was more of a swingman while Washburn was an established starter.

Washburn had a miserable season with Cincinnati in 1970. He posted an ERA of nearly seven, and the Reds released him after the season. Culver spent half of a season in St. Louis before the Astros acquired him in a trade. He established himself as a reliable reliever in Houston and pitched in the major leagues until 1974.

On this day in 1994, the Reds signed third baseman Craig Worthington. He hit .278 in ten games with Cincinnati in 1995. The Reds later traded Worthington to the Rangers for Stephen Larkin.

On this day in 2000, former Red Willard Marshall died in Norwood, NJ at the age of 79. The Reds purchased him from the Boston Braves early in the 1952 season, and he played for Cincinnati through the 1953 season. Marshall lacked the power of a typical rightfielder though he had an above-average on-base percentage. For his career, Marshall walked more than twice as often as he struck out.

On this day in 2003, former Red Dernell Stenson was murdered in Chandler, AZ at the age of 25. Stenson had made his major league debut with the Reds earlier in the year and was playing in the Arizona Fall League at the time of his death. The circumstances surrounding his murder were strange as an old girlfriend had sent him death threats in the past though the police ultimately concluded that she was not involved in the crime (Wikipedia).

The finest muffins earned a point last Wednesday. Ron Gant and Reggie Sanders were the two Reds to finish in the top ten in the NL in home runs in 1995.

Dernell Stenson attended LaGrange High School in LaGrange, GA. The high school has produced one other major league player in its history. This other player had a seventeen-year career, which included one season with the Reds. His career overlapped Stenson's though they were never teammates. This player was an all-star and even received MVP votes. He once led the league in strikeouts, but never in any other category. Who is he?
