Ondrusek gets a 2-year deal

Brad Penner-US PRESSWIRE

The Reds and Logan Ondrusek have avoided his first go-'round in arbitration by agreeing to a two-year contract extension, as per The Fay. No word yet on the dollars, but I'll guess it's for around $3 million.

I don't really know why the Reds thought it important to guarantee two years for the big fella. His career ERA is a solid 3.45, but that's really the only thing he has going for him. His strikeout rate isn't good (15.9%), and his walk rate is actually bad (10.5%). Considering the make up of the bullpen going into this season, I would think there is a real chance for Ondrusek to spend some time down in Louisville. He's been pretty lucky over his career, and with a few bad breaks he could have been a non-tender candidate this winter rather than ending up with a multi-year deal.

It probably isn't too big of a deal, in the end. The deal is likely only for a few million dollars so it's not like this a big risky move or anything. But it is strange.
