On this day in 1858, former Red Stocking Hugh Nicol was born in Campsie, Stirling, U.K. Nicol played for Cincinnati from 1887 through 1890, which were the last four seasons of his major league career. While in Cincinnati, he slashed .234/.330/.281 (82 wRC+) in over 1900 plate appearances. Nicol is best known for setting the single season stolen base record with 138 in 1887. However, at that time, a player recorded a steal whenever he took an extra base on a hit, such as going first to third on a single. Due to this, we have no idea how many modern steals he had.
