This Day in Reds History: Jim Maloney was really, really good

Frank Victores-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

On this day in Reds history, Cincinnati roughed up a Hall of Famer in his major league debut while another Hall of Famer and former Red passed away. Also, Jim Maloney pitched three outstanding games, all shutouts, for the Reds.

On this day in 1908, the Reds shelled Hall of Famer Rube Marquard for six hits and five runs (two earned) in his major league debut. The rookie went only five innings as the Reds beat the New York Giants, 7-1. Marquard would later spend a season in the Queen City (1921). In that season, Marquard went 17-14 with a 3.39 ERA (105 ERA+) in 265.2 innings while amassing 2.4 bWAR.

On this day in 1925, the Reds became the first major league team (and only NL team) to have two teammates hit bases-loaded triples in the same game. Curt Walker hit a bases-clearing three-bagger in the third inning while Rube Bressler knocked in three runs with a three-base hit of his own in the fifth inning. The Reds beat the Brooklyn Robins (Dodgers), 18-7. The attendance at Redland (Crosley) Field was only 534.

---

On this day in 1929, Hall of Famer Miller Huggins died in New York. Huggins is best known as the manager of the "Murderers' Row" Yankee teams of the 1920s that won six AL pennants and three World Series championships. However, Huggins spent the first six years of his career playing second base for the Reds. In that time, he slashed .260/.362/.310, which is surely one of the oddest lines in the history of baseball (his career line is very similar - .265/.382/.314).

---

On this day in 1951, Reds catcher Johnny Pramesa slugged a grand slam in the bottom of the 14th inning to beat the Cardinals, 7-3, at Crosley Field.

---

On this day in 1964, Reds Hall of Famer Jim Maloney pitched a one-hitter at Shea Stadium to beat the Mets, 3-0. Maloney struck out eight while only walking two in the first game of a doubleheader. The Reds took the second game as well, 4-1.

---

On this day in 1965, Jim Maloney hurled a two-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Astros in the Astrodome. Maloney struck out six and walked three.

---

On this day in 1968, Jim Maloney threw a two-hitter as the Reds beat the Pirates at Forbes Field, 3-0. Maloney struck out 11 and walked only one.

---

On this day in 1969, former Red David "Stormy" Weathers was born in Lawrenceburg, TN.
