Mike Leake vs. Josh Tomlin

Clear. Winds blowing out to center field at 5-15 m.p.h. Game-time temperature: Around 85

Mike Leake and the Reds try to rebound tonight after coming up short in the slug-fest opening game of the series. These two pitchers faced off last week and neither pitcher could make it past the 5th inning in the Reds 12-5 win. Interestingly, Leake has eclipsed the 100 pitch mark only twice all season. Nonetheless, Leake has pitched well as of late. In his last 6 starts, he has averaged just over 2 earned runs per game.

Josh Tomlin, on the other hand, has been pretty miserable this year. After leading the AL in BB/9 last season (1.1), Tomlin is walking more hitters this year. For a guy who doesn't miss a lot of bats, allowing free passes is typically a recipe for ugly numbers (5.56 ERA). In his last outing, the Reds blasted Tomlin for 10 hits and 6 runs in 4 innings.

In case you haven't noticed, the Reds' bats are on fire. They have failed to score at least 3 runs just once in the month of June. In 16 games this month, the Reds have scored 5 or more runs 9 times. And some dude named Joey Votto is good at hitting baseballs. Votto's .368 batting average is higher than the OBP of every other Reds player. Think about that for a minute...

Unfortunately Mike Leake won't be allowed to swing the bat today. His .818 OPS is better than every Reds hitter outside of Votto, Frazier, and Bruce.

And finally, how about this gem from Joel on twitter:
