Joey Votto blasted one of his signature opposite-field home runs last night, and it was just terrific. Aside from that, all the fireworks were supplied by a cadre of rabble-rousers, n'er-do-wells, and raconteurs the likes of which are rarely seen. I must say, it was an unexpected delight to have my name chanted by half a section of fans at the ballpark. Not my real name, of course, but the handle I use on an internet blog. If they had chanted my real name it would have been...less good.
This afternoon is Game 3, which marks the beginning of regular ol' ballgames for the Reds this season. Openings Day and Night were split with the Marlins, so this rubber match will determine who goes home with the marbles. Representing the Reds on the bump is Bronson Arroyo, who will be beginning his 7th season as a Red today, which is a pretty long time. You know, he's had a pretty interesting career in Cincy thus far, blowing up as a rotation ace after the unassuming trade that brought him here, settling in for a few years as a league-average innings eater, almost annually being threatened with a trade or a DFA, and most recently bottoming out with the worst season of his career. It goes without saying that he his hold on his rotation spot is a tenuous one, but we've seemingly been saying that for years. But it's probably fer serious this time.
Carlos Zambrano makes his Marlins debut today, but we know him quite well from his years as a dreaded Cub. Hopefully he gets all upset and stuff and the Reds can put up six or seven runs on him.
Go Reds! They are my favorite team!
