So long, former Reds, it's been good to know ya... Best of luck. Well, maybe not BEST of luck...
I was browsing and searching for any news or speculation about why Ryan Ludwick has not yet been officially added to the Reds' roster when I found this article at FoxSportsOhio.com. The article didn't provide any insight on what brilliant masterstroke Walt might be planning with the roster but it did provide this list of players that the Reds have sent packing since last season ended:
DEPARTURES: RHP Edinson Volquez, 1B Yonder Alonso, RHP Brad Boxberger and C Yasmani Grandal (traded to Padres); LHP Dontrelle Willis (free agent, signed with Phillies), C Ramon Hernandez (free agent, signed with Rockies), LHP Matt Maloney (waiver claim by Twins), LHP Travis Wood (traded to Cubs), OF Dave Sappelt (traded to Cubs), RHP Francisco Cordero (free agent, signed with Blue Jays), LHP Jeremy Horst (traded to Phillies).
OTHERS: RHP Levi Jared Burton(free agent, signed with Twins) and RHP Daryl Thompson (free agent, signed with Twins)
FREE AGENTS: SS Edgar Renteria.
"Whoa," I thought, "That's a lot of guys."
Personally, I've been pretty happy with the moves of this off-season. The Reds had a considerable number of good-to-great players but the level of collective talent on their entire roster was somehow kinda stuck on good. Now, we've been over this and over this and there's really no reason to go over this again: DId Walt make all the right moves in order to help the Reds win now?... Hey. Whatever. That's not what this FanPost is about.
As I looked at that list it occurred to me that even though I was okay (and sometimes even thrilled) with all of the moves that let all those guys go, there are almost certainly going to be two or three guys that have great seasons in 2012 and 2013. And that's what I wanted this FanPost to be about... (Well, that and all the movies in those '2012' and '2013' links ;)
So, who did the Reds let go/trade away that you think might now outperform their assumed career projections and make us think, "Daaaaaamn. That guy was a Red!"
(And by the way, here's the awesome scene that inspired that not-as-awesome animated GIF.)

I believe we will see Yonder and Yasmani in the most unfavorable ways.
as in batting 4 and 5 in the play offs, for years.
Yes.
Trading Grandal will bite us in the ass.
Mesoraco will be Ramon Hernandez good…Yazz-man will be Victor Martinez good.

Good thing they can't hit Mat Latos's stuff
It’s a shame they’ll have to watch the Reds celebrate on the field every year.

Oh, right
You know, for a second there, I was kinda regretting losing Alonso and Grandal. Grandal in particular. I like the Vic Martinez comparison.
Then I remembered we got Latos.

That's the beauty of prospects, they're all going to hit .325 and be a mainstay for 10+ years

Yonder will be a great hitting 1B man who could have been the offensive anchor of the Reds for several years.
But it is all a moot point now.
Scott Roland should retire tomorrow.
Alonso's the only player
from the list whom I think will turn into a star, or at least be very, very good. Grandal likely will be solid. Still, I’m happy with the trade. I can see the rest knocking around the league for years or being being easily replaced.

You left out
Daryl Thompson and Jared Burton. Both Twins now, I believe, like Maloney.
I could see one of them having a Todd Coffey 2009 year this year.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
re: Thompson and Burton (I'll add them.)
Thanks. I was thinking that Thompson should have been on that list but I couldn’t remember if he finished last season with the team or if he had been sent walking earlier.
And re: “2009 Coffey”.. Yep. That’s what I’m thinking when I see that list. Someone there is going to blow up and have a year that is twice as productive as we’re all thinking right now. They’re dead to us now but that doesn’t mean their cremated ashes won’t blow back in our faces. Stinging our eyes. [Sniff] Dammit. Something in my eye.

Maybe Volquez
He does have All-Star cred and all. We kinda sold low on him.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
volquez got more mileage out of a good half season than anyone i've ever seen
that was a long long time ago & he hasn’t come close to approaching that level since then
Of course, you are right
but that’s the thing with prospects like him. He still has electric stuff, and as long as he has that he’ll continue to get chances. I was willing to give him the chance this last season, and I even had pretty optimistic hopes for him, but now he’s gone and I couldn’t care less.

And maybe being in San Diego will help out a lot with those HR tendencies.
I could see him having a sort of 18-4, 3.20 ERA season. He’ll be the Gold Star of Reds: hurt on the way in, hurt on the way out.

Jack Armstrong and Joe Randa come to mind...interesting.
Any others?

Austin Kearnes.
He was as good as he ever was (maybe better) during the second half of his rookie season. Almost won Rookie of the Year IIRC. But after that he was ‘the first round pick from Lexington playing right field for the Reds!’ for a few years.

That's not completely true
from 2002-2005, he was worth about 4.6 WAR per 650 PA. The problem was that over those 4 seasons (including a partial 2002 where he hadn’t been called up yet), he only averaged 367 PA. He was really good. He just couldn’t stay healthy.

Aw, c'mon.
Dan Driessen played nine or ten (or more?) years as a mostly productive and slightly better than average major leaguer, didn’t he? I know he never put up eye-popping sluggerific first baseman numbers but he was pretty close to Hal Morris-y wasn’t he?

Driessen was marginal.
I don’t have to look at his stats…Sparky said so and that’s good enough for me.
Scott Roland should retire tomorrow.

Scott Roland should retire tomorrow.
Yonder is really going to make us miss him
that is unless Walt figures out some miracle and is able to lock up Joey long term.
My Torreyes love is fading, but I still think he’ll be something. Of course Grandal will be a valuable piece as well. I have a feeling at some point this year when injury/injuries strike, we will look at what Dave Sappelt is doing and wish he was still an option. Heck, he might become a decent everyday player, though I wouldn’t put a large bet on it.

Or, he could never make it to the majors
I’m reminded of feeling very frustrated, along with many others on the site, when the Reds traded Justin Turner (and Brandon Waring, to a lesser extent) for Ramon Hernandez. He wasn’t a great hitter, but he’d put up a .310/.377/.445 line in the minors to that point. I thought the Reds might regret dealing him. After spending 2 straight years in AAA, he had a decent year in the majors last year (.260/.334/.356, OPS+ 93). I don’t recall hearing a single person ruing his loss.
Obviously, Torreyes’s future has little to do with Justin Turner. However, we tend to get worked up about these things in the moment because they seem important. But then it takes 2-3 years for the prospect to even get to the majors, and by that point so much has happened to the Reds that we’ve already forgotten that the player was in the Reds system, or at the very least, we tend to care very little about their success/failure.

this could go down as a Prime 9 worst trade ever
but it wont. Yonder will be decent, but only make 1 all-star appearance. Grandal will only be a serviceable backup. fingers crossed
or not.

He might be better.
His strikeout ratios have been as good or better than a young Rijo and this as a full time starter- not messing around in the builpen as Rijo did.

by Fat Vegas Alan on Feb 8, 2012 9:16 PM EST up reply actions
aye, but strikeout rates were much lower in general in Rijo's day
In 1990, Rijo struck out 6.94 per 9 IP, good for 16th in the majors (for pitchers qualified for the ERA title). In 2011, that would’ve ranked 51st, right in front of Daniel Hudson. Our boy Latos ranked 15th in K/9 last year at 8.57.

Is this because starters were often pitching further into games back then?
Or is that just a wild guess that doesn’t even make sense?

Strikeouts are up in general.
In 1990, 14.8% of all PA ended in a strikeout. In 2011, it was 18.6%.

Crum-Bum Beat
Maybe when he was making 'The Tree of Life'...
he discovered that there really is something to this Mayan calendar end-of-everything thing and he told the producers he’d make two movies in two years if they paid him up front.
More likely, he’s shooting them back-to-back or even simultaneously (Christian Bale stars in both I see) and one of them will get to theaters in like 2015 and then the other one another five or seven years after that.
