Reds reach Minor League deal with Jeff Francis | reds.com: News
Seems low risk and, if he can turn the clock back five years, high reward.

I really like this as a depth signing.
I was actually excited to read it on the ticker last night.

I'll preface this by saying that I don't really buy into fWAR for pitchers...
But, here’s the last year’s fWAR for the potential 2012 starters:
Latos: 3.2
Cueto: 2.8
Francis: 2.6
Leake: 1.5
Bailey: 1.5
Chapman: 0.6 (all in relief)
Arroyo: -1.3
Taking it a step further, here’s the past three years:
Latos: 7.3
Cueto: 7.0
Francis: 4.6 (including a missed 2009 season)
Bailey: 4.6
Leake: 2.7 (only 2 years)
Arroyo: 2.0
Chapman: 1.3 (only 2 years, all in relief)
No matter how you look at it, this was a GREAT pick-up.
Trying to pull off "having no money and talking to no one" as well as the Reds have.
Nice.
And the minor league nature of the deal helps our roster flexibility a bit through the end of spring training.

the internet says he turned down a major league deal with the Mets
To take a minor league deal with us. I wonder what they told him?
"There may be a time when we can't pay you."
“My full contract?”
“No, at all.”

"Can we interest you in some shares of Citi Bank stock?"

That's really interesting...
Kind of makes you wonder if he’s got a clause that says he can opt out if he can find a major league gig. If he turned down a major league deal for a minor league one with the Reds, would he stick around even if there’s no roster spot for him? Is he happy being minor league pitching depth?

He does have an opt out
From Jerry Crasnick:
Francis’ deal can increase to $3.25M total with incentives based on starts. He can also opt out on March 28.

I have mixed feelings about ball players who have multi-gender names.
Scott Roland should retire tomorrow.
Not sure about you,
but I’ve never met a girl named Jeff.
