2012 Community Prospect Rankings: David Vidal rounds out the top 15
David Vidal is the 15th ranked prospect on the list. Some say this is probably a little later than most expected, but for me it's right on the money. There are still a lot of questions surrounding him, but as long as he can shore up his plate discipline, I think there's a solid major leaguer there. Maybe working with Rolen a bit will help out that process? I also think he's poised for a huge breakout year with the bat in the Bako bandbox and will be ending the year in Pensacola if all goes well.
Same choices as yesterday.
Tucker Barnhart, C, 21, BA-UR, Sickels-#18
(Dayton) .273/.344/.387/.731, 3 HR, 43 RBI
Pros: Disciplined hitter (only 59 K in 326 AB), and was voted the best defensive catcher in the minors last year. Switch hitter.
Cons: Not a power threat, still questions as to if he'll hit in higher levels.
Tim Crabbe, RHP, 24, BA-UR, Sickels-#14
(Dayton) 3.65 ERA, 24.2 IP, 25 K, 7 BB, 1.17 WHIP
(Bakersfield) 3.41 ERA, 111.0 IP, 123 K, 46 BB, 1.29 WHIP
Pros: Two above average pitches, profiles as a solid reliever. Put up good numbers in the Cally League, which is a pitcher's nightmare.
Cons: Needs a 3rd pitch if he wants to be a starter. Kind of old for his level, so needs to go to AA and pitch well.
Juan Duran, OF, 20, BA-UR, Sickels-#16
(Dayton) .264/.329/.463/.792, 16 HR, 71 RBI
Pros: Has tools like an Ed Hardy catalog. Finally started showing power potential this year, on his lanky 6'7" frame.
Cons: Struck out a lot last year. Plate discipline needs to improve drastically in higher levels.
Amir Garrett, RHP, 19, BA-UR, Sickels-UR
No pro stats yet
Pros: Throws 96. Athletic doesn't even begin to describe him. Chapman-esque delivery.
Cons: Is a basketball player. Very, very raw talent. Needs secondary pitches.
Donald Lutz, 1B, 23, BA-UR, Sickels-UR
(Dayton) .301/.358/.492/.850, 20 HR, 75 RBI
Pros: Lots of power, and had a breakout season this year where he started hitting for average too. German fella.
Cons: Strikeouts a major issue, and doesn't walk enough. A little old for his level after 3 years of rookie ball.
Gabriel Rosa, 3B, 18, BA-UR, Sickels-#17
(AZL Reds) .245/.314/.406/.719, 2 HR, 10 RBI
Pros: Good speed on the basepaths, and scouts love his plate approach.
Cons: Rookie debut wasn't spectacular, still a very raw talent.
Josh Smith, RHP, 24, BA-UR, Sickels-UR
(Dayton) 2.97 ERA, 142.1 IP, 166 K, 33 BB, 1.09 WHIP
Pros: Struck out a lot of hitters last year, was the ace for a playoff team.
Cons: According to most scouting reports, doesn't really project as anything other than a back-of-the-rotation starter at best. Low 90s fastball, and his out pitch is a breaking ball that could get exploited by better hitters at higher levels.

I settled on Josh Smith
slightly old, but K and BB rates are pretty sick, especially for a starter. Everybody else just throws up huge red flags to me.

At this point everyone should have red flags
They are prospects and the list is in the mid-teens.
Even elite prospects have red flags. Good players just learn and adjust and are able to overcome the holes in their games.

I would say Red Reporter has yet to overcome any holes.

I did that unintentionally in undergrad once
met a friend at the bar for lunch between classes, we split a pitcher (with our food), hit me a bit harder than I expected.
Not really something I recommend making habit of though.

On St. Pattys Day in 2009, I did a presentation wasted.
I woke up for kegs and eggs at 5:30. I completely forgot about my team presentation in one of my education classes. I received a text from one of my classmates about bringing an outline of your part for the presentation. I only had enough time to go put on khakis and polo shirt and run to the class.
I gave my five minute part of the presentation, from just the top of my head, and I was bombed. I was to the point where I needed my noon St. Patty’s Day nap. Not only did we get an A, but the instructor said she would have given me a job for how well in I did.
Moral of the story… always drink before a presentation.

you're not doing it right, then
splitting a pitcher shouldn’t do anything to you

This is a tough one
Barnhart’s the closest to a sure thing. Rosa’s ceiling is nuts. Who knows about Garrett?

Garrett's ceiling is pretty nuts too
also, if you think about that statement, a ceiling made of nuts is pretty funny

BTW, is Denis Phipps such a prospect that we should continue comparing other prospects to his stat line?
expectations are premeditated resentments - cheshirecat
Phipps is such a prospect that he should still be on the list to be voted on......
and losing.

SB Nation must love Denis Phipps
He keeps magically reappearing in the prospect rankings.

Herman Cain.

He deserves to be on the list at this point
I agree

Why does he deserve to be there more than any of the other guys on the list?

well, for one
Denis Phipps was already ranked. For second, umm, ok there’s only just that one reason. Also, Denis Phipps should still be on the list because he’s not going to be good.
Fuck lion say what! i got a fuck lion now come fuck wit me
Because his numbers are insane
and he’s young.
Many of the players on this list have numbers that are pedestrian, or they aren’t very young.

This is interesting.
Saw this article on the sidebar, and while it’s full of good information and a reasonable premise, I’d have to say I full-on disagree.
This off-season didn’t derail the Pirates…Sid Bream did.

Bream had hep from Barry Bonds.
Andy Van Slyke said on MLBN 20 Greatest Games that he told Bonds to play a little more shallow right before that at-bat, and Bonds looked at him and flipped him the bird. Had he not been an arrogant prick and heeded Van Slyke’s advice, Sid Bream would not have even attempted to score.

That sounds like prototypical Bonds.
I was mainly referring to the idea that if the Pirates made the series that year, maybe Bonds doesn’t skip town for the Giants.

I voted for Garrett
but then again i love myself some unproven high ceiling pitchers.

How does that explain your love for Wood and Maloney?
Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."
my love for Maloney was overblown because based on his minor like strike out and walk numbers i thought he deserved a chance
which turned into an RR schtick of sorts.
I also don’t think, and never thought, that Wood is going to be an ace, or even a 2 level pitcher, I do think he could become a solid back end of the rotation guy, maybe even a #3 (but that might be stretching it). Wood’s velocity isn’t great, but it isn’t terrible either, he hits 93-94 on the radar gun from time to time, and he sits about 89-91.
To say Wood is garbage who will never accomplish anything at the MLB level is a tough argument to make.

Too strong?
Admired, perhaps
Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."
I don't fully understand the Barnhart praise
to an extent, yes, but to me he honestly looks like filler, or a guy whose ceiling is a backup.

Is Gabriel Rosa supposed to be getting more votes?
Honest question.

I would have him getting votes over 4 of the players listed
Everyone except for the two leading, to be honest
