SIS - New Music Edition
We've had quite a tradition of music posts around here, which I could find if I weren't too lazy to look them up. The last one was particularly good -- folks were listing their 3 favorite songs that people haven't heard of. If you aren't too lazy, you could look it up too.
Well, it's after Christmas and I got $15 worth of iTunes burnin' a hole in my pocket. So I ask myself, who better to take life advice from, especially musical life advice, than the RR crew? Plus, if I wanna know, probably there's a whole bunch more of you that wanna know too. I know, if I weren't so lazy, I'd look up the old one and get some of that stuff. But I am. +1.
So what new music should I get? It doesn't have to be NEW new, just new to me, but it gets a bonus for being new.
For what it's worth, I've been listening to a lot of Switchfoot lately, but I like everything from Dylan to Ozomatli to Johnnie A to Beatles. Not huge on DMB nor the Biebster.

Darkness - Permission to Land
It’s nearly a decade old, but the band just got back together. Time to remember what made them an incredible rock band instead of just a joke.

My parents got the Mumford & Sons album for Christmas. I do not own it.
I’m legitimately stumped as to which is cooler.
I'm legitimately stumped by their popularity
Not your parents, Mumford and Sons
Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."
Are the Decembrists named "Decemberists" or "Decembrists"?
I’ve seen it both ways.

OLD EDITION

Scott Roland should retire tomorrow.
New-ish stuff
We’ll assume these are either new, or new to you:
Awolnation
Cobra Starship
David Guetta
Jason Aldean
Lifehouse
Lita Ford
Muse
Ratt
Seether
Sevendust
Skillet
30 Seconds to Mars
I can recommend specific songs by any of these if need be
The ends justify the means
Please tell me Cobra Starship and David Guetta are there as jokes.
Unless they have some stuff that’s nothing like their famous songs. Of course, I’m not sure I’ve ever heard Guetta actually say anything in his songs besides in that one awful song with Akon where he repeats the same line over and over.
David Guetta wasn't a joke

That's still my favorite Sufjan album.
If you don’t count the piano he plays on The National’s “Boxer.”
Is all their stuff lo-fi
like Bloodbuzz Ohio?
I like the music, but the whole lo-fi thing annoys me. I get it, rage against the machine and all that. But you are using your electronics to make it sound worse. And not in a “distortion-is-an-effect-I’m-going-for-to-sound-cool” way, more in a “my-mom-bought-me-this-cheap-tape-deck” way.
It’s like Hipstamatic and that Holga thing on an iPod.
"The USA despite its flaws and corruption and overall messiness is still a great and powerful instrument of freedom and hope for the entire world." - Madville
If you like Dylan, but don't really care for lo-fi
Try listening to Iron and Wine’s “The Creek Drank the Cradle.” It’s just a man in his apartment with his beard and his guitar singing into his tape recorder, and sounds great.
For a faster, louder version of the same effect, I recommend “More Parts Per Million” by The Thermals.

very sad, but very good.
Zombies Walk is one of my favorite mashups.
This is the other.
"You said 'walks' twice."
"I like walks."
Ever listened to Ludo?
They play a little bit of everything.
My favorite song of theirs is called Topeka. If HLM hasn’t heard it before, I demand that he check it out.
Their song Anything For You is one of my favorite love songs.
They’ve also got some really bitter stuff that’s completely awesome. Good Will Hunting by Myself is one of my favorite angry breakup songs ever. The whole album You’re Awful, I Love You is great.
Easy Listening Most of this section is thanks to Rose, to be honest. Love this stuff.
I’ve listened to a lot of Bon Iver lately too. Good easy listening stuff. “For Emma, Forever Ago” is a great album. On the same lines, you might check out Iron and Wine. My friend showed me a song of theirs called The Trapeze Swinger.
And don’t forget Nickel Creek. Their self-titled album is one of my favorites.
Rise Against usually doesn’t fit this topic, but Swing Life Away deviates from their norm and makes for a really great acoustic song. Another of my favorites.
I’ve also gotten into The Avett Brothers recently. I And Love And You is a fantastic song. I also really like Kick Drum Heart which is much more upbeat.
Ever listened to The Tallest Man On Earth? You might give them a shot too.
And people have already recommended Mumford and Sons. I recommend them a ton.
Some Harder Stuff
I’ve started listening to Bell x1 a good bit. I think Flame is my favorite song from them.
Another band I’ve started listening a lot to is The Cribs. I’m A Realist is my favorite by them. Don’t You Wanna Be Relevant is one I really like too.
You might also consider checking out Pendulum. Their song Watercolour is pretty sweet.
I always have to recommend my old stand-byes like Eve 6, Better than Ezra, and The Gin Blossoms.
will give it a listen my man

Allow me to rephrase: I have a real problem with what you've posted here.
You post a picture of a woman solely to call her fat. You then say that by virtue of her fatness, she is no longer attractive, and thereby not worthy of being a bandmate nor musician. You’re rather specific about this, complimenting her voice, then attacking her body through a picture essay.
Frankly, I’m ashamed to be associated with you. We don’t make fun of your daughters’ weight when you post pictures of them.
It’s bad enough that you vomit into our threads your irrelevant pictures of whatever A-cup, string-bean female athlete you’re masturbating to that week. But you’ve gone full-sexist creepy guy here.
This isn’t the place for you to share your hate of women who weigh more than 90 pounds. We have more women on this site than ever – and these women are not only here and active, but they’re here and active in the offseason. It boggles me that you display such myopia regarding how this crap scares them off, and misrepresents our community so vigorously. We’ve discussed it before, the ladies have complained, you haven’t altered your behavior, and here you’ve taken it a huge step farther by not only objectifying them ridiculously, but doing so at the peril of them being worthwhile in society.
Wow, that’s horrible.
I’ve lost a lot of respect for you over this. I don’t want this to be the community where people come to look at pictures of women to call them fat and worthless. And if that’s your game, I’d really rather you take it somewhere else.
You’re way out of line, dude.

Sorry Petey...Truely
I don’t generally hold back on any category of human being…but I meant not to offend you. Ergo no more fat jokes about women…unless its my wife,
Does this mean I can’t poke fun at skinny girls either?

Scott Roland should retire tomorrow.
The irony of these pictures being posted as an attempt to lighten the mood is astonishing
These pictures are are about as unfunny as you can get and underscore Petey’s point. The absurdity of judging the value of women based on the size of their bodies has resulted in skeletal women being dressed in designer clothes and paraded down a runway as some kind of “ideal.” Of course these women are being ridiculed now as well.
I don't know why my kids call me that. I think I'm a pretty nice mom.
Sorry, DM & ladies...

My random 3 with a twang.
Hayes Carll- any song on KMAG YOYO is fucking awesome. My record of the year.
Deer Tick- Divine Providence…. not quite as strong as Born on Flag Day, but still damned good.
Alabama Shakes- Whatever you can find. They’re still learning, but the young lady can sing her ass of with some old-school soul.
Wear something sexy to my funeral.
I really want to check out the Shakes
They were opening for Drive-By Truckers on New Years Eve here in DC, and an interview with Patterson Hood had him gushing about them. I was very satisfied seeing the DBT show that Lucero opened (and bb, jch can back me up that checking out Lucero is a good idea), but I was very intrigued about the Alabama Shakes.

Things from 2011 I enjoyed not already listed
The Weeknd – House of Balloons. They just released the third album in 9 months on their website. All for free. Underground rapish with some Massive Attack feel for me. All for free. Disappointed by the 2nd one, haven’t heard the new one.
Childish Gambino – Camp
Real Estate – Days
Youth Lagoon – The Year of Hibernation
The Drums – Portamento
Cults – Cults
Gillian Welch – The Harrow and the Harvest
Charles Bradley (get the re-release with his cover of Stay Away)
Lykke Li – Wounded Rhymes
Yuck – Yuck
I'll definitely second the Charles Bradley and Yuck nominations
