Will You Still Heed Me, Will You Still Need Me, When I'm 63 ?

Well Gang..its that time of the year again.Tomorrow is my Birthday (Jan. 20) and you know what that means. It is time to get off your fat ass and buy me a present. That’s right damn it, and this year I want way, way, way more presents than last year. And just because you gave me a present last year doesn’t get you off the hook for a bigger one this year.

What, you ask, is on my B-Day list in 2012..No: Its not an evening with Kristen Stewart or a new Lear Jet or Tweeter lessons... NOPE. I want the same stuff as you gave me last year on my birthday: All you have to do is grab a few canned goods, some household items, maybe some gently used blankets or a warm jacket ..stuff like that and go to your local FOOD BANK/HOMELESS SHELTER and donate it.

2011 was an extremely brutal year for the dislocated, the mentally ill, the teen runaways and those suffering from drugs or running from abuse. Single Moms with kids without work and marginalized families without homes need a bit of help from those of us who are in a position to share our good fortune. In 2012 the government, Non-profits, Temples, Mosques, and Churches will be hard pressed to help even as much as last year. The struggling economy has hit our support services hard and even more people will be in need for shelter, clothes and food than last year. It is beyond belief how hard it is to live on the streets or in shelters and especially difficult in winter.

So instead of giving me those box seat season tickets to the Reds…take a few bucks and turn it in to something that will make a big difference on this cold winter day for a less fortunate person, one who is not that different you or me...someone who has been overwhelmed by circumstance and is in dire need of our help.

There is so much aid going to Argentina, Chile, Japan etc (and they need it) that local food banks and shelters actually lose donations in these times of great disasters. Please participate. it is so easy to do. Give now, give plenty, and give often.

Thanks Again!!

Your Pal Mads

And I’ll gather another batch of clothes and canned goods and take ‘em down. I can’t remember where we took stuff this summer, what is a good place in Cincy? Matthew 25?

I'm in in Cincinnati

but I’ve discovered that the Freestore Foodbank is probably the non-profit organization most like the NPO in Columbus that I work with and most admire.

This is from a review on Yelp:

How can you give the Freestore anything less than five stars?

They do so much good for this city, donating food and clothing and everything else to the city’s low-income population. The good they do can’t really be measured … but I’m going to try anyway.

I’ve donated many things to their drop-off center in Over-the-Rhine and every time the staff has been helpful and courteous. You put into the center, they help you unload everything, give you a receipt if you need it and then you’re on your way. Fast, easy, excellent.

The Freestore also put together and runs events like the Taste of NFL or the Rubber Duck Regatta, two events that have become synonymous with both great charity and Cincinnati. They are both a lot of fun and wonderful for the city. How many other events can say that?

I’m only hitting on a small portion of what the Freestore does. If you’re ever looking for a group to volunteer with or donate to, this would be my pick.

And here is the Freestore Foodbank’s advice:

… Collect nutritious, nonperishable canned and packaged foods that have yet to expire (no glass, please).
… Box it up and drop off the food you have collected at:

Freestore Foodbank Customer Connection Center
112 E. Liberty St.
Cincinnati OH 45202

M-F 8-4:30, S-S 10-2, Closed holidays

Most-needed Items
•Canned chicken and tuna
•Canned corn beef
•Canned fruit
•Canned vegetables
•Dried or canned beans
•Fruit juice
•Jelly
•Macaroni and cheese
•Pasta
•Peanut butter
•Rice
•Whole grain cereal

And here is some really good mission-statement-y stuff from their very good website:

Food
Before there can be a conversation on possibilities and potential, we must provide food. It is the single most important foundational element linking all people.
Connection
Addressing hunger allows us to have conversations on other issues affecting individuals, families and communities to help create stability and self-reliance for those in need.
Hope
By connecting those in need to services that create stability, we work to determine the root causes of hunger and poverty and build hope in our community.

This is great info

I’ve been trying to get together a list of Cincinnati-area non-profits for donation-based contests. Red Cross is obviously great and we could spread the love around to some more of the most effective local orgs.

The Freestore-Foodbank is indeed a fantastic organization.

And the Foodbank operates as a distribution center for almost all the other hunger-serving organizations in the area. Other agencies purchase (at great, great discount) supplies and goods from the Foodbank to serve their own programs and clients. If you go to this page on their website, you can download a list of agencies they work with around the region. A few that I’m personally familiar with are Churches Active in Northside (CAIN), the Drop Inn Center, Our Daily Bread, and the St. George Interfaith Food Pantry.

Happy birthday, Madville! I made a clothes donation to a local nonprofit on Saturday, unaware it would also serve as your birthday gift. Happy coincidences!

In honor of your birthday, I’ll donate to Anderson Ferry Food Pantry.

Have a great birthday, Mads.

I don't know why my kids call me that. I think I'm a pretty nice mom.
