2012 Community Prospect Rankings: Some Dutch dude named Mariekson rounds out the top 10

Rounding out the top 10 is another infielder, Mariekson Gregorius, although you probably know him as Didi. Personally, I like him slightly better than the player directly above him on the list, mostly because of his defense, but Gregorius is going to be one to watch this year strong contact skills. He's a free swinger, but puts the bat on the ball so he doesn't strike out a lot, and has the athletic build to be able to stick at shortstop.

For those wondering where his nickname came from, turns out it's his father's name, who was a honkballer from Curacao playing in Amsterdam when Didi was born. That's neat.

Same choices as yesterday, vote accordingly.

Star-divide

Tony Cingrani, LHP, 22, BA-NR, Sickels-#6
(Billings) 1.75 ERA, 51.1 IP, 80 K, 6 BB, 0.80 WHIP

Pros: Fastball sits around 93-94, but can reach back and get 97. Long, consistent delivery. Lots of strikes, doesn't walk many.
Cons: He was a reliever in college, so questions still remain whether or not he can be a starter through a full season. Secondary pitches are promising (slider, changeup), but not even close to being finished products.

Donald Lutz, 1B, 23, BA-UR, Sickels-UR

(Dayton) .301/.358/.492/.850, 20 HR, 75 RBI

Pros: Lots of power, and had a breakout season this year where he started hitting for average too. German fella.
Cons: Strikeouts a major issue, and doesn't walk enough. A little old for his level after 3 years of rookie ball.

Kyle Lotzkar, RHP, 22, BA-NR, Sickels-#15
(Dayton) 4.32 ERA, 66.2 IP, 72 K, 25 BB, 1.14 WHIP

Pros: Throws 3 pitches, with a fastball in the mid-90s, a good curve and a developing changeup. Gets lots of strikeouts and doesn't allow many baserunners.
Cons: Injuries. Tommy John survivor, and his mechanics haven't changed much to help alleviate that risk.

Denis Phipps, OF, 26, BA-UR, Sickels-#20
(Carolina) .328/.382/.502/.884, 7 HR, 38 RBI
(Louisville) .380/.428/.576/1.004, 5 HR, 26 RBI

Pros: Toolsy outfielder who had a huge breakout season last year. Can play all outfield positions. On the 40-man roster.
Cons: Only one good season. Still kind of old to be a "prospect", so he's more of a late bloomer. Plate discipline is still pretty awful, and had a high BABIP last year.

Gabriel Rosa, 3B, 18, BA-UR, Sickels-#17
(AZL Reds) .245/.314/.406/.719, 2 HR, 10 RBI

Pros: Good speed on the basepaths, and scouts love his plate approach.
Cons: Rookie debut wasn't spectacular, still a very raw talent.

J.C. Sulbaran, RHP, 22, BA-#9, Sickels-#12
(Bakersfield) 4.60 ERA, 137 IP, 155 K, 50 BB, 1.39 WHIP

Pros: Very solid 3-pitch repertoire, with an above average FB and a solid CH and CU. Above average stuff leads to high Ks, and he significantly improved on his previously spotty control in 2011.
Cons: Some question about his unorthodox mechanics remain, although he smoothed them out in 2011. Somewhat of an injury history. Mainly, he needs to repeat his strong season in AA in 2012.

David Vidal, 3B, 22, BA-UR, Sickels-#13
(Dayton) .280/.350/.498/.848, 20 HR, 85 RBI

Pros: Very lively bat, hitting for both average and power. Good defense.
Cons: Still questions about his size (he's listed at 5'11"), and struck out way too much (111 in 454 AB).

You guys are gonna vote for Cingrani, aren't you?

Okay, the numbers are seductive. But he was a college guy pitching to 18-year olds. Sulbaran pitched in the most hitter-friendly league outside of slo-pitch. And two levels higher. But you do what you think is right.

I voted for Subaran

Wanted to vote for Lotzkar but I need to see another season and a few more innings before i’m ready to believe he can stay healthy as a starter. Same with Cingrini. I still see him as a reliever. He needs to succeed as a started at higher levels before I buy in.

OK, I haven't spoken out critically of any votes yet

but Dennis Phipps? That’s just dumb.

Meant to add this

Part of his summary:

The Reds eviscerated the upper half of their prospect list by trading for Mat Latos, but their under-25 list is among the best in the game.

The Reds are going to have some bigger holes to fill next off-season, but they still have a lot of young talent to build around.

Interesting he rates Hamilton that high, even though he lists him as a 2B

If the team decides he doesn’t have the footwork or arm for short, I’d like to see Billy in CF as Goldstein suggests.

by ken on Jan 17, 2012 10:17 AM EST up reply actions

Why would someone have the arm for CF and not for SS?

Isn’t centerfield, like, really far away?

Arm is a much bigger component of playing SS than it is for CF

Plus you need slightly different things from a SS arm, like a quick release. A CF can get away with slinging the ball to some degree or using his momentum to aid the throw.

Didi Gregorius and other prospects from Curacao !

Mariekson ‘Didi’ Gregorius, the son of the great Curacao pitcher ‘Didi Gregorius’, is an athletic top shortstop prospect out of Curacao with great range and strong arm. Gregorius is a good hitter with occasional power. He must keep develop his hitting skills by playing more and more baseball at high level. He is a future ML shortstop, that can hit around sixteen homeruns and steals above twenty bases.
The Cincinnati Reds prospect, Mariekson ‘Didi’ Gregorius has already a lot of international experience playing at the shortstop position for the Dutch team at the Intercontinental Cup in China Taipei and last year at the IBAF World Cup in Panama, beating the Cuban national team in the final.

Didi Gregorius is already playing in the States, but another top shortstop prospect, Juremi Profar, 16-year-old in 2012, 5-foot-11, is still playing on the island of Curacao. Profar has a very good range as shortstop and is a good hitter with a power bat. Juremi Profar is a true athletic infielder, now shortstop, but as he keeps growing, can be move to the thirdbase.
Profar has already a lot of international experience playing at the Littleleague World Series, at Williamsport. At that time ESPN Baseball analyst, Orestes Destrade knew it already. All but guaranteed Juremi Profar will get signed by a major league club, when he’s 16 and eventually make the majors.

Other prospects from Curacao to watch; SS/2B Sorick Liberia, RHP Mirangelo Muller, RHP Claycandy Hariquez and LHP Quinton Willems.

When Mirangelo Muller isn't even getting a bronze, you know you're in for something.

Dutch people are just the best people some times.

Scott Roland should retire tomorrow.

I voted for JC Sulbaran !

I saw some games of Denis Phipps from Leones del Escogido in the DWL and he’s looking very impressive, but he is already 26 y/o.
I voted for JC Sulbaran, because he has already a lot of international experience at high level, playing in the WBC and other tournaments, pitching against the Cuban national team and winning the IBAF World Cup last year in Panama.

I went Lotzkar

but probably should’ve gone for Sulbaran

Seems like an appropriate place to post this...

Jim Callis at Baseball America selected his All-Rookie team for 2012. Mesoraco ©, Frazier (3B), and Cozart (SS) all made the list.

The thing that struck me...

We’re going to be relying an awful lot on unproven players this season. I’m cautiously optimistic that these young guys are going to be great, but it’s no sure thing at all.

I don't get into prospect ranking much,

but am I wrong to assume Josh Smith will be making an appearance on this list? Thanks, guys! TTYL!

by GrooveLeg on Jan 17, 2012 11:52 AM EST reply actions

I'd think so, yeah.

He ha a great year last year (especially factoring in how high Corcino was ranked).

He’s just a bit old for his level. We’ll find out for sure this season.
