Then keep Alonso in LF if Heisey’s not good enough for you and sign Oswalt or Jackson.

This would be bad for a million bucks, much less this 2.5 plus option crap.

Gomes out hit this guy last year, and probably will next year, too.

Trade Heisey now, of this is how you think of him. Get something for him before Dusty relegates him to the bench for the whole season, and just let Frazier be the 4th OF.

Tequila and pancakes, anyone?

by Kevin Mitchell is Batman on Jan 17, 2012 10:14 AM EST up reply actions

I checked out Ludwick's splits and found something interesting:

Ryan Ludwick’s OBP the last three years:

2009 STL .329
2010 STL .343
2010 SD .301
2011 SD .301
2011 PIT .341

That’s right…that damned Petco Park pitchers’ haven!

But, wait…his home/road splits don’t jive with that theory – they are inexplicably about even in a SSS. It just so happens that Ryan Ludwick had NEVER fallen below a OBP of .325…except for during 2 half-seasons with San Diego, and he has since already bounced back. There is actually reason for hope.

Once I saw this, I really liked this signing.

Well that makes more sense

I don’t hate the Ludwick deal as much as everyone else does.

I wouldn’t be shocked if he is a 2 WAR player with an OPS+ around 100. I also wouldn’t be shocked if he shits the bed. Maybe Fukudome, Damon, or Drew would have been better, but those three guys have serious durability issues.

Also Ludwick is probably better than the in house options, and he is much better than the in house options if Stubbs or Bruce miss some serious time, and the Reds have to delve deep into the depth chart to find outfielders.

by Yossarian22 on Jan 17, 2012 2:07 PM EST up reply actions

Lots of over reactions here.

Calm the fuck down, people, he’s a 4th OF. He plays solid defense and will probably OPS+ 110 this year in GABP. He’ll play adequate defense. Against RHP, he OPS+’d 113 last year. If Heisey’s reverse platoon split is real, the only problem is we still don’t have a LF that can hit RHP.

He’s a career .261/.332/.455 hitter and is projected to be a .250/.320/.400 hitter, which is just fine for your 3.5-4th OF.

Hitting wasn’t the problem last year. The pitching is better. We still have Joey. There wasn’t a better option.

i wasn’t in for any of these guys…ludwig, ross, ankiel, etc…of those three, i think i’d rather have ankiel, given that the reds really need another lefty bat…and the guy does have some speed and an arm…as for ludwig, i just don’t see how heisey isn’t better all the way around…so if he’s gonna be a #4, well, fine…maybe gabp will help ludes show up better offensively, too…the part i don’t like the most is simple…it seems the reds have a bit of flexibility still with the payroll, and i just think that unless a real help dropped into their laps, they should wait until the mid-summer when some teams will be seeing less than success and starting to think about 2013, and ready to make some move personnelwise…the reds would likely be in position to more accurately identify a guy who could truly help, and it’s likely that guy would be out there then…

I don't like it

Part of the problem will probably that he’s misused or overused. Dusty has been unwilling/unable to set up a proper platoon and this one is going to be confusing for all involved. Heisey has reverse platoon splits, which may or may not continue apace over next season. Ludwick is a righty who has historically hits righties better.

There was a better signing/trade to be had, though I have trouble seeing that it makes the outfield much worse, if at all, considering Ludwick is essentially bumping Phipps off the OD roster.

If he can even be convinced it’s 2010, he could be a plus, with good defense and proper usage. Frazier against tough lefties and Ludwick/Heisey splitting the rest of the time in some logical way is a really patchwork solution, but it would work out.

by BubbaFan on Jan 17, 2012 6:40 AM EST up reply actions

Which is exactly why this signing sucks

it doesn’t complement the roster at all, and unless Ludwick can magically turn back the clock 4 years, it doesn’t even improve the roster. But it gives Dusty a really hard situation to figure out, which is just…I don’t even know what to say about that. Everybody can finish that thought on their own.

by kcgard2 on Jan 17, 2012 9:18 AM EST up reply actions

well

It does give everyone a defined role, which Dusty seems to like. I think Heisey will remain the fourth OFer/pinch hitter. He can play every OF position, which Ludwick can’t. Or shouldn’t, anyway. No worrying about swapping OFers around if Stubbs needs a sick day or something.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

Yeah, I kinda like keeping Heisey in his current role

I'm as down on it as the rest of you, but there's a silver lining.

It’s somewhat related to the Rich Aurilia coincidence, but maybe Ludwick can be something. He has a better penchant for getting on base than Heisey or Frazier, which is huge.

Best case: he goes 270/340/430 for 400 PAs or so. Worst case, he gets cut and we hope for the best out of a Frazier/Heisey combo.

I’ll be pissed if Fukudome goes for less, though.

Weird, we agree on everything!

The starting infield lineup is Votto, Phillips, Cozart, and Rolen.

The backups are Frazier, Francisco, Cairo, and Janish.

Frazier can serve a roster friendly flexible guy who can play in the in field and outfield, Francisco will caddy for Rolen, Cairo can play the corner infield positions, and second base in a pinch, and shortstop in a harassing pinch, and Janish can play the entire infield. I guess the question is, do you think it is worth paying Theriot a few million dollars for the small amount of playing time that would otherwise go to Janish?

by Yossarian22 on Jan 17, 2012 10:34 AM EST up reply actions

Is my math wrong?

5 SPs + 7 RPs +8 starters = 20. That leaves 5 roster spots for bench hitters. Three go to Hanigan/Mesoraco, Cairo, and Heisey/Ludwick. That leaves two spots for three players that you mentioned.

I’d put Francisco and Frazier there, but I won’t be surprised to see Francisco and Janish instead.

Trying to pull off "having no money and talking to no one" as well as the Reds have.

by badenjr on Jan 17, 2012 10:42 AM EST up reply actions

That is the other reason I do not want Theriot

he may end up pushing Frazier further down on the depth chart.

Although Frazier may end up getting a spot due to his versatility allowing him to play left field and all the infield positions. He could be the 5th out fielder going into spring training.

The biggest problem for roster flexibility is the Francisco Rolen thing, two players at the same position who can only play one position.

Theriot is an absolute liability whenever he takes the field.

Any benefit we get from playing him over Cozart on offense (which will likely be infinitesimal, if at all) is negated by his abhorrent defense.

Theiort’s OBP has been hovering around .320 over the past 3 years. There’s no reason why Cozart can’t match that.

by FordhamRam on Jan 17, 2012 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

If Cozart can OBP over .300 I will be pleased as punch

That is all the Reds really need anyway, with plus hitters at second, first, and right, and probably third, and the potential for a plus hitting catcher, and a decent hitter in center field.

I know Theriot is probably a worse overall player than Cozart

but I think in this case Dusty would actually recognize that Theriot is and should be the backup. And no one else in our system is as good an option after Cozart as Theriot would be – in the event of an injury or unexpectedly awful performance from Cozart, neither of which is that far-fetched.

.320 OBP is probably about where I’d put Cozart’s high point for this year, and Theriot’s low point. And abhorrent is really strong, don’t you think? How about, below average to average-at-best.

Not a fan of this deal

but signing Ludwick isn’t as terrible as most seem to think.

Going to GABP could really help Ludwick…it’s a good ballpark for him….Im sure playing most of the season at PETCO canyon was pretty demoralizing. He gives us extra insurance in case of injury or ineffectiveness, especially with Heisey or Stubbs. And can’t he play 1B? What if something happens to Votto?

Granted, Dusty will probably misuse him.

Actually, the best thing I can say about this deal is maybe it means the Reds are out of money, and won’t be signing Ryan Theriot. I think he’d be more damaging to the Reds playoff hopes than Ludwick.

And really Ludwick didn't turn to shit

until he was traded to San Diego in mid-2010. In 77 games in St. Louis before the trade, he had an OPS+ of 123. Then he plays 101 games in San Diego in 2011, probably didn’t have much time to get comfortable or get his swing back in just 38 games with the Pirates.

I’m trying to look at the glass half-full. If he’s going to bounce back at all, GABP is a great place to do it.

It’s not signing Ludwick that sucks. It sucks that we all KNEW he was going to be coming here because he’s an ex-Card and we all pretty much know what Dusty is going to do. I get that GM’s have favorite former players from their previous teams, but it clouds their vision. Ludwick is not Walt’s Cardinal anymore. He’s gonna suck for the money. So how many more former Cardinals are we gonna get? And why could he convince Pujols to come play LF/3rd?

Something he hasnt been close to the last 2 years.

And he’ll be taking plenty o ABs away from a younger, cheaper guy coming off a 1.5 win season.

Who else would have paid him this much? Not the Rays, Orioles, or anyone else in the market for a LF/bench bat.

$2.5 mil isn’t an overpay.

My only qualm is that he is seen as a the clean-up hitter, as KMiB suggests. I don’t know of anyone else on the current team who would be markedly better, but it’s still underwhelming to envision of lineup with Votto-Ludwick-Bruce at it’s heart.

Hanigan was not a Free Agent

you can’t make that comp.

FWIW, fWAR has Ludwick at 2.3 over the last 2 years combined. And I think his style will benefit from a smaller park. Not that that will re-launch him as a player, but he’ll look a lot better than he did last year.

I’m not THAT concerned about Heisey getting 350 PA instead of 500 PA. That’s not going to make or break the season.

It was only a couple of years ago that people were complaining about the Rolen signing

That first year of Rolen went a long way to getting the Reds to a division title. I’d like to look at this as the Reds learned from the Rolen deal and simply signed Ludwick to a 1 year deal. He’ll have a huge year for the Reds and then be gone for a younger player before he breaks his hip.

Points in Ludwicks favor:

1. He has the reputation as being a good defensive player.

3. Cardinal fans were pretty miffed when he was traded in 2010 – they really loved the guy. If he beats them a couple of times in a Reds uni, it will really irritate them.
