Sunday NFL/Golden Globes Open Thread
As I type this, the Ravens-Titans Texans (like anyone cares about the difference between the two teams) game is turning into a product as unwatchable as last week's Titans Texans-Bengals game.
Good thing we have the Giants-Packers game to look forward to later. (Go Giants!)
Oh, and stick around for Ricky Gervais (hopefully) saying some very offensive things to people we should care less about. The nominations are after the jump (which doesn't really matter since this is a non-frontpaged fanpost.)

tl;dr
sadly, i haven’t seen most of the movies nominated, so i’ll just be rooting for people i like.
i think the only movies on this list i’ve seen are moneyball, bridesmaids & midnight in paris.
the directv guy is supposed to be here for install very soon. I hope he gets me set up in time to watch Gervais’s opening comments.
I'll be rooting for Midnight in Paris.
As for TV, they should just make a period piece category since most of the best dramas are now set in the early 20th century.
I’m not a a devotee of it (or most of the comedy/musical nominees for that matter), but what’s with Community being shut out for nominations?
i don't know, dude
community is the best comedy on television right now & most people don’t seem to get it.
Midnight in Paris was very good.
I was really pleasantly surprised that Owen Wilson could play someone that neurotic.

He frustrates me more than any other actor
It’s obvious he is extremely talented (Midnight in Paris, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Minus Man, Bottle Rocket). But he seems far too content making insufferable shit like Drillbit Taylor and You, Me, and Dupree.
I really liked Midnight in Paris, and I really liked Owen Wilson in it, but I wish Woody had made the movie 30 years ago and played the lead himself.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Jan 15, 2012 5:10 PM EST up reply actions
It's true that Wilson was really just Woody's surrogate in that film.
What were your thoughts on Wedding Crashers. I thought it was better than Drillbit Taylor, but certainly not Midnight in Paris material.

You're asking the wrong guy on that one
I hate Vince Vaughn, and I’m not really fond of low-grade, frat-boy, R-rated comedies. So I didn’t like Wedding Crashers.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Jan 15, 2012 5:23 PM EST up reply actions
How do you feel about Superbad?
Wedding Crashers made me laugh out loud the first time, chuckle the second time, and by the third time I wasn’t interested anymore. The first two times I saw it I was with big groups of friends so everyone was laughing and that always makes a movie more enjoyable for me.

He’s very good in those, both criminally underrated shows

i was a big rogen fan, but i didn’t expect him to have mass appeal. i’ve been extremely pleasantly surprised by his explosion into super-stardom.
did you know that he & his friend (that co-wrote 50/50) were writers on the ali g show?
I did see that
It seems like an unnatural match

like jason biggs, owen wilson & larry david.
he returns to acting in his next film, but it seems he’s still going to have someone doing a woody allen impression in it. it also stars jesse eisenberg. seems like a good choice to me

That reminds me of a funny story
The day after the Iowa caucuses, I was listened to the news on NPR. They did a bit where they read listener emails about the caucuses. One said something like, “I really hate election season, and I can’t believe it just started”. Another said, “Will Mitt Romney win the nomination?” and then another said, “There’s Santorum everywhere!” It was really hilarious to hear that read by the the NPR news host.

i’m not excited
everything is moved & a bunch of stuff is unboxed.
no tv & the new furniture won’t be here until wednesday, so it’s going to take a while to feel settled in.
while i'm at it, furniture stores have the absolute worst set up for consumer i can think of
you have to pay for everything up front, they charge a ton for delivery & there is absolutely no hurry to get your purchase to you. it’s basically “you’ll get it when you get it”.
i hate paying for something & then having to wait for it. once they have your money, there’s no incentive for urgency
This is true.
Unless you’re cool with the build-it-yourself Ikea stuff.
Which, at this point in my life, I am.
i am not very "handy", so i haven't gotten anything from ikea
without the ability to load stuff up & bring it home or put it together, ikea may not be for me.
however, if they actually stock their items, that’s a big plus for them

I don't think any union made car should be labeled "most Republican."
Though the converse probably isn’t true for Democrats.
But if the Republican car can't be union
then it can’t be American. It would definitely have to be a Ford or GM, right?
by Charlie Scrabbles on Jan 15, 2012 6:50 PM EST up reply actions
Hmmm
That seems like a secondary concern to me.
I think it has to be the F-150 because it is perceived to be more American than the Tacoma. Perception is a powerful thing.

I can see that, but you will find plenty of Democrats that won't be caught dead in a VW
or a Ford, for that matter, for historical reasons.
I would have thought the current
ownership and direction of the company would matter more than historical occurrences.

Possibly, but Henry Ford was a horrid, horrid anti-Semite.
And VW’s initial inception is a non-starter for many, regardless of what they’re currently doing.
It should be said that this isn’t necessarily a Republican or Democrat thing. Rather, I’m functioning under the assumption that party lines among Jewish individuals goes 60-40 for the Dems.
old people hate mitsubishi
because they mistubishi made the planes and/or engines that were used to bomb pearl harbor
Well, for me, I'm much more concerned
about what’s happening at the company currently, rather than historically. I know Ford was an anti-Semite and VW was founded by a Nazi labor union. However, if I’m going to boycott VW products I would have to boycott a whole slew of companies. Not sure how accurate it is, but I found this through a quick Google search. I understand how a Jewish person could feel this way, but I don’t feel any guilt over driving a VolksWagen or drinking a Coke. Maybe I’m just an asshole though.

Nah, you're not an asshole.
People prioritize things differently. I know gentiles (like myself) that probably won’t buy either while I know Jewish folks that own both a Ford and a VW.
when it comes to a purchase as big as an automobile
a company’s history is one of the last things i’m looking for.
i’m much more interested in finding a vehicle that will last without a lot of upkeep cost & will maintain its value.
that’s why i don’t drive a ford or volkswagen
I have a Volvo and Honda
station wagon and van, respectively.
I’m a Ron Paul supporter with progressive leanings. Don’t care for his views on abortion or the environment, and I can’t come to terms with his entitlement views. I absolutely love his civil liberty, foreign policy, and above all his monetary policy views.

Looks like 5 years at $42 mil, plus two option years. Think Latos would go for something like that?
by Charlie Scrabbles on Jan 15, 2012 4:16 PM EST reply actions
He might
He probably should.
Pitchers are high-risk. Guaranteed money is a good thing.
And if he’s really good, there’s a good chance they’ll give him more money via an extension or something. If he’s not good, he’ll kick himself for not taking the deal.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
that wouldn't be bad
but don’t the Reds already have him for 3 (or was it 4) years though?
by Howie Feltersnatch on Jan 15, 2012 4:34 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah, 4 years
But if they can get him on a deal that buys out a few free agent years at a modest price, it would probably be very beneficial.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Jan 15, 2012 4:45 PM EST up reply actions
i think i get it
so offer him something like that come next winter? give ’em more pay over the remainder of his current contract, and possibly steal a couple extra years if he stays healthy and turns out to be our dominant hurler over the time.
by Howie Feltersnatch on Jan 15, 2012 4:51 PM EST up reply actions
Kinda
These long-term extensions for young players are built on the idea that it’s mutually beneficial. The player gets a big payday and guaranteed money long before he hits free agency, and the team gets a good player at a discount price. The downsides, of course, are that the player is potentially leaving tons of money on the table by forgoing free agency, and the team is taking a risk that the player remains healthy and productive.
If the Reds are inclined to offer him a long term deal, I would do it right now. If you wait until after next season, he could price himself out of such an extension (like the Votto situation last year). If you do it this year, like Gio (he also had 4 years of team control left), the contract is long enough to give the team good value while being cheap enough that if he busts then you aren’t on the hook for tons of money.
Perhaps the Reds have already asked him and he said no. But hopefully they at least bring it up.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Jan 15, 2012 4:58 PM EST up reply actions
would offering Latos something similar be like
just paying, i don’t know the numbers exactly, roughly 36 million for one extra year? That’s me assuming he’s slated to make a mil/yr, again I don’t know the numbers, but was my understanding why he was a preferable pick up, not to mention his abilities. so all that extra money only buys an extra year, plus the options? Id assume the options are also 8 figures. Is that cheap? I must be way out of touch. What was Phillips’ option price vs Cordero?
by Howie Feltersnatch on Jan 15, 2012 5:07 PM EST up reply actions
Both Phillips' and Cordero's options were $12 mil
The benefit of signing Latos long-term is that it gives the team cost-certainty over the life of his deal. As it stands right now, he’ll go to arbitration after next season and the next two seasons after that. And he’s as good as he’s been the past few years, he’ll get really expensive and very quickly.
You are right that he was a preferable pickup in large part because of the four years of control. But the Reds are probably going to have to pay him a ton of money through arbitration, so it may be to their benefit to lock it down early.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Jan 15, 2012 5:17 PM EST up reply actions
oh, i see
arb eligible after next year. how does that equate to under team control though? if they go to arbitration, and don’t agree to something, wouldn’t he become a free agent? or does arbitration mean some neutral party decides what is fair, tough shit for both parties? my apologies for being such an ignoramus.
by Howie Feltersnatch on Jan 15, 2012 5:26 PM EST up reply actions
No worries
It’s all really complicated and confusing.
All players are subject to six years of team control. The first three years are “pre-arb” years where the team will pay the player whatever the hell they want to (which is usually the league minimum wage, which is around $420k now). The second three years are “arb” years, where the player’s salary is somewhat negotiable.
How it works is the team will submit a suggested salary, and the player will do the same. They then usually work out an agreeable amount between those two numbers. But if they can’t, then they go to arbitration where an independent panel decides between the team’s suggestion or the player’s suggestion. This is pretty rare though. The last time the Reds went to arb with a player was Chris Reitsma in 2004.

Thanks for the reply
so the advantage with Latos was really that he’s young. Which is fine, I’m glad Walt did something, and watching Latos, he seems to be potentially fantastical. Weird we gave up Volquez in the deal too though. Almost seems too much to give up now that I have a clue about Latos’ situation. Looked liked we shedded some money, but really we’re in for potentially more if Latos pans out (which is a GOOD thing). And the other position players were blocked, except for Volquez.

I certainly think those are admirable characteristics in a league that centers around placating babies.
And saying a Super Bowl winning coach that has not only won in NY but also Jacksonville isn’t a winner is silly.
when i think of coughlin, i always think of him as a mediocre coach
like this season. he had a very talented team in a horrible division & only went 8-8.
he also didn’t win enough in jacksonville to keep from getting fired
That seems a roundabout way of looking at it.
He’s 26 games above .500 in the regular season.

He didn't go 8-8. He went 9-7, won the first round game.
and he hasn’t had a losing record since 2004.
He’s not a self-proclaimed offensive or defensive genius. He don’t grandstand in the media. He simply does his job at a high caliber.
I think this Giants team is better than its record would indicate.
Philly was a good team that got unlucky. Dallas was a good team, too. The NFC East was tough this year, but it wasn’t as clear as it was in years past.

Yeah, it was clearly the most overrated division in the NFL this season.
Philly was proclaiming themselves to be NFL’s version of the Heat and ended more like the 2010 Bengals.
Dallas is always overrated because of the assumed expectations of Jerry Jones.
The Giants are in NY, so there’s that.
If you think about it, the only team that met expectations this year for them was Redskins. Everyone knew of that brand of suck.
FWIW, Brian Burke was really high on Philly, New York, and Dallas.

Apparently when I get close to blackout drunk, I get really damned smooth. Like… really smooth. The gal I dated over break and I were hanging out at her suite and there was a big party. There were tons of dudes there. Tons. Including the guy she liked before the two of us got involved. Well, seeing him again now that they’re back at school kind of brought her feelings for him back, and we talked about it for a while. So yes, here I am at a sausage fest with the girl I like, and the guy she likes. Not good odds for me. But guess who woke up in her bed the next morning? Damned right. Nice guys win.

For the record
Trying to help out somebody you like figure out how someone they like views them kind of sucks. But hey, she lives a state away, and I need time to be single. If that guy can make her happy, and I’ve still got her for one of my best friends, I’m happy with that. Who knows what the future holds.
You're right, it does suck, but
I’d rather a girl be happy with someone else than unhappy with me. Those make for shitty friendships

Thanks by the way
You’re right, I’ll refrain from posting things like that. It’s a bit late to stay golden though. And for the record, I can count the number of times I’ve been fucked up on one hand.
false
getting fucked up is cool, especially when you’re not driving.. you can let your hair down, enjoy yourself, enjoy the company around you given they are probably getting fucked up too
talking about it? How else are you supposed have bro talk?
talking about hooking up is what bros do. It’s healthy for the testosterone count, so we’re not having to take that Ageless Male stuff later on in life when we just don’t have it anymore.. sharing it with your sports blog community? that’s camaraderie..
but, DfL, all of us will get off your lawn

nope - but you know what is cool....being sucessful
Which is mutually exclusive from getting fucked up because it requires being deliberate. You think Jay Bruce or Joey Votto go out and get fucked up? How about the Dos Equis guy? You think he gets stubbling drunk? Doubt it.
I bet they have a few and watch their less successful friends get fucked up though.

so you can't be successful if you cut loose from time to time?
I vehemently disagree
but hey, to each their own

You seem to get the better part of the circle.

Wait, wasn't that guy that was on The Office?
Did not know he was British.
I don't know why my kids call me that. I think I'm a pretty nice mom.

I'm not a big fan of George Clooney.

I liked him in O Brother and Michael Clayton.
I think I just have a terrible taste in my mouth from Batman and Robin and Leatherheads.

Yeah, those were two awful roles
but his directorial stuff along with Syriana and the Ocean’s remakes are pretty great.
I saw one of the Oceans sequels and I thought it was decent.
Syriana is one I have missed.
One thing I always learn from RR is how far behind I am in every facet of pop culture!

They were briefly a couple on Sports Night, too!
Like, really really briefly. But still.

My sister got me one of these for my college graduation.
Something along the lines of “You’re so egotistical, you want statues built in your honor everywhere you’ve been. So here’s your first.”
It’s pretty awesome.

Gotta love those uniforms!
I wasn’t familiar with JR Richard until a quick google search. Pretty compelling life story.
