Who's next? Let's rank-em
He's not walking through the LF door anymore.

But, what a great past couple of weeks, eh?
Most everyone seems to agree that LF is the next position of most need. Bubbafan clearly elaborated upon this in a fanpost just a few days ago. I agree that many folks (especially Walt and Dusty) aren't that comfortable letting Heisey/Frazier/Phipps begin the season as the starting LFer. Just imagine how sticky it could get if Stubbs continues his woes this spring, thereby pushing Heisey into CF.
Having Heisey as the 4th OFer allows for a more versatile team, still leaving the possibility for Heisey to take over a starting role by mid-season. There's no reason to hand over the reigns quite so easily, especially when there are viable options still left on the shelf.
So with the aforementioned assumed; How do folks rank the possible FA LFs left for the picking?
How about everyone's top-5 for Walt to consider?
Personally, I'd rank the options:
1. J.D. Drew (Lance Berkman type comeback?)
2. Johnny Damon (might look pretty good hitting between Phillips and Votto)
3. Kosuke Fukudome (a platoon with Heisey could be quite impressive)
4. Ryan Ludwick (a Walt-like discount-rate might suffice)
5. Cody Ross (not much of a fan, but he's not past his prime)
honorable mentions (Rick Ankiel, Raul Ibanez, Carlos Guillen, Brad Hawpe, Xavier Nady)
So, who do you got?

Fukudome or Drew
They can both still take a walk, and are about average defensively. I’d love it if we could swing a trade at the deadline for an Ethier type, but I’m fine with starting the season with Heisey/those two

Jason Bay
Lowest of buy lows. He’s due for a rebound, and the Mets should be willing to eat a good portion of the salary.
this is interesting
but i don’t think the Mets will trade him and eat any significant salary.

This is the first time I've heard someone mention J.D. Drew
I like the idea. With his recent history he could probably be had cheap and I agree that we could see a strong rebound b/c he would be bracketed by Votto and Rolen (assuming he is healthy) and he would gain the benefits of hitting in GABP. A confidence boost from GABP may trigger that resurgence.
Let's say it's the middle of May
Heisey/Frazier/Whoever is struggling, Votto’s being pitched around, Manny’s still unsigned, and his suspension is about to end. Do you take a chance?
by poojols on Jan 12, 2012 8:32 AM EST via mobile reply actions
I think Manny has to serve a 100 game suspension if he comes back, so It'll be later than the middle of May if someone signs him
Fuck Murray Chass
I thought it was reduced to 50 games for some reason....

They reduced it to 50 since he "retired"

yeah, it's 50 games
But it doesn’t start until he’s signed.

I still say Damon.
While he may be a liability in LF, that actually makes him perfectly suited for a Reds LF. If Dunn and Gomes can sham it up out there, why not Damon? The due can actually still hit, too.

I think I would go with Fukudome and Drew over Damon
but they are all more or less the same at this point.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Jan 12, 2012 10:00 AM EST up reply actions
I dunno.
Drew’s numbers are cliff diving and he is (and always was) an injury waiting to happen, and I’m just convinced that Fukudome isn’t a very good player.
At least Damon is durable with a track record (in the AL East at that).

Yeah
I wouldn’t be too excited about any of them, and I wouldn’t be too angry at any of them, neither.

Hopefully they could give Drew a much reduced role
and only plan to give him, say, 400 PAs?

I disagree about Damon being durable
I feel he simply isn’t capable of playing OF anymore
expectations are premeditated resentments - cheshirecat
I feel you are right about that
He’s durable in that he’s had a long career, but he needs to DH now, and I think he knows it.

Hey,
Damon & Drew are both Boras clients. We just signed Madson, who is also a Boras guy. I would not be surprised if Jocketty inquired about their services during the Madson deal. I’d love to have Damon ~ $3 mil for one year.
by Joe Nolan's Neckbeard on Jan 12, 2012 10:54 AM EST up reply actions
Damon.
He’s the perfect FA to go after.
He’s looking for a 3 – 5 mill 1-year contract, can hit, matches up perfectly with Heisey as a platoon partner, and is a good clubhouse presence with tons of postseason experience. What’s not to like other than his being a mediocre defender?
It all boils down to whether or not he can survive another season in the field
He’s primarily been a DH the last two years

Carlos Lee has not had problems staying healthy enough to play the field
and that’s why people question Damon, not his adeptness.

I definitely do not want Damon

by Highlifeman21 on Jan 16, 2012 11:27 AM EST up reply actions
Agreed, plus...
He gets on base, which means he would be a great fit at either the 1 or 2 spot in the lineup. I’m currently underwhelmed with the Reds options to hit in front of Votto. Phillips and who???
Trying to pull off "having no money and talking to no one" as well as the Reds have.
I think we'll be seeing one more outfielder brought in...
But I don’t think he will be anything exciting. I’m thinking Walt brings in a few more Jeremy Hermida types on minor-league deals, and lets them duke it out for the final 25-man roster spot in the spring.
Personally, I’d like to see Drew (hadn’t thought of that one before), Damon, or Fukudome because I’m a sucker for OBP, and I think those guys could provide some with their solid walk rates. I also think Heisey is an excellent PH/LIDR and would like to see him remain in that role as the 4th OF. I just don’t think it is going to happen.

Give him a shot
but what struck me from the article is that Vlad is a FA. Let’s put him in LF and let him bomb away at GABP.
Hadn't heard J.D. Drew before, but he's the top of my list too
then some guys I would not be very excited about: Fukudome, Ross, Damon, Ludwick.

Aaron Guiel had a nice little Japanese career with similar numbers.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
You're not wrong, but I want to add though, that the league average was .247/.297/.343
Is there a mod so powerful he can ban himself?
In a comparative sense, yes.
But he’s mostly hitting home-runs, and he’s doing so in a small park against generally inferior pitchers. It’ll be interesting to see what he does next year as hitters and pitchers adjust to the more consistent ball.
Is there a mod so powerful he can ban himself?
Yeah, this was what I was getting at
Also, given how incredible he was at the start of the year, I expected his numbers to look a lot more impressive. Looks like he was fairly pedestrian for most of the year. Not something that makes me think he belongs back in the states.

Actually, perhaps not.
Both Heisey and Nix, though they hit from opposite sides of the plate, can’t hit lefties.

If he was cheap, as a 4th or 5th OF...
Would you be interested in Juan Pierre? I prefer to pick up a guy south of the 30 year old equator, but he provides that decent BA and pinch running factor. His lowest BA for a season was .275 but I am concerned about his defensive abilities and his age (which I think is slowing him down).

Juan Pierre was truly awful last year
and Dusty would play him 90% of the time at least. And Pierre’s skill set (what’s left of it) would be minimized by GABP. IMHO that would be a terrible pick up.
expectations are premeditated resentments - cheshirecat
I just want to clarify that I am not Dusty Baker...
I just see us picking up an older/speedy guy as an inevitable offseason transaction. That and the quote about how he provides veteran leadership to our young core of OF etc…
The amount of liquor I drank last night would've killed a small-to-medium sized Asian family.
Juan Pierre bunted at a pitch 120 times last year
That’s the most in baseball and he’s one of only 3 nonpitchers with 80 such attempts.
If you love bunts, Pierre takes…(sunglasses on)…the cake. YEAHHHHHHHHHH!
