Pepsi MAX Field of Dreams Lineup Announced
Remember way back in the day when I interviewed Barry Larkin and talked about the Pepsi MAX Field of Dreams contest? Well voting is over and while our boy didn't make it some other former Reds did. Here's the team:
The Pepsi MAX® Field of DreamsTM Team roster is comprised of:
- Starting Pitcher – Randy Johnson
- Catcher – Johnny Bench
- First Baseman – Frank Thomas
- Second Baseman – Rod Carew
- Third Baseman – Mike Schmidt
- Short Stop – Cal Ripken, Jr.
- Outfielders – Ken Griffey, Jr., Tony Gwynn and Reggie Jackson
- Relief Pitcher – Dennis Eckersley
- Designated Hitter – Edgar Martinez
More info after the jump, including how to decide where the game will be held, after the jump.
This is pretty cool. From the press release:
More than 2.5 million votes were cast from baseball enthusiasts across the country to determine the 11-man dream team, which includes some of the biggest names in baseball: Cal Ripken Jr., Randy Johnson, Ken Griffey Jr., Tony Gwynn and Reggie Jackson. The team was selected from 30 player nominees who represent more than 20 Hall of Famers, 325 All-Star Game Selections, 32 World Series Championships, 20 League MVPs, 15 Cy Young Awards, and 119 Gold Gloves. Their records have stood the test of time and their stories have become a part of the fabric of the game, creating the tapestry that is the National Pastime.
That's a lotta hardware, wow.
On September 14th Pepsi will announce four fan finalists who will then plead their case to host the All-Time Greats team in their city. Once again, from the press release:
Similar to how the 11-man roster was chosen, from September 14 through October 5, fans will have the chance to vote for which of the four finalists will host the Pepsi MAX® Field of DreamsTM Team, in their local community surrounded by family, friends and baseball fans. Additionally, ESPN will air a one-hour special chronicling the Pepsi MAX® Field of DreamsTM program, the fan-voted 11-man team and four consumer finalists on September 25 at 8:30 p.m. ET.
If you'd like to take part in deciding where the game will be played, check out the Pepsi MAX Field of Dreams webpage starting September 15th to see what cities have been chosen and to vote for your choice.

Since Cal moved to 3B by the end of his career, I'm really not sold on his range at short at this point
Carew could get the job done
.328 hitter, .393 OBP, 353 steals. Gwynn’s probably right around there too.
by ken on Sep 8, 2011 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, but he was caught stealing over 50% of the time over his final five seasons.
And he’s probably not any faster than he was in 1985
Gwynn might be a touch slower as well, unless there's a pork chop on the next base

He's probably pretty slow by now
maybe not as slow as Sal Bando, but bad enough

-coviner's lawful neutral Paladin / Debutante character
Not as slow as Ron Santo either

Eck heck
I’d take wassisyankeface or John Franco any day over Dennis Eckersley. He got all the saves because he was teh first to be used that way. Franco was put in as a Fireman, not a closer (remember when those were different?).
Yankeeman is lights out awesome. why the hell can’t I remember his name?

Not Rivera, right?
Probably Gosage
There was something in the air that night, the stars were bright, Arredondo. They were shining there for you and me, for liberty, Arredondo.
I was thinking Rivera
but think I’d probably actually take Gossage as he, like Franco, was used to stop RALLYS and not just get the last three outs.

Dominance is dominance. Neither Gossage nor Franco was as good as the Eck.

From 87-93, Eck was crazy
However, Mariano has been dominant from 96-2011. I’m personally not buying Eck over Rivera.

It's not even close
Mo is, far and away, in a class by himself. And he just throws one pitch. It’s really unbelievable.

No question
Eck was great, but it’s hard to believe he won the Cy and MVP in ’92. Pos made a point recently about the voters not knowing what to make of the saves explosion in the late ’80s and early ’90s, which is why we have some forgettable winners (Mark Davis, Steve Bedrosian).

Eck's best season > Mo's best season
And it’s not close.
Also, 197 wins.

But how do you compare Mo to somebody like Mike Marshall or Goose Gossage
In 1974 Marhall threw 208 innings over 106 games in relief and kept a nice tidy ERA of 2.42 If a pitcher can keep an ERA of 2.42 over 208 innings today he is a Cy Young candidate.
While 74 was Marshell’s best year in 1973 he pitched 179 innings of 93 games in relief with an ERA of 2.66, and in 1979 he threw 149 innings over 89 games in relief and 1 start.
Marshall threw at least 99 innings 8 times his career, which is unheard of now for a reliever.
Riveria may be more dominant over 1 innings, which has its value, but I just don’t think any modern closer is comparable to guys like Marshell or Gossage who routinely threw multiple innings to get saves.
It will get better.
This is a situation where WAR actually does a pretty good job of teasing out a proper comparison
Career WAR is much more reliable than season-to-season WAR (though I still like it well enough for that), and for their careers Marshall compiled 16.9 WAR. Mo – 55.6. Goose – 40.0.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Sep 8, 2011 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions
That sounded so low I thought you looked at the wrong Mike Marshall
For total career I’d definitely take Mo, but in general I think that WAR undervalues relievers. If a guy pitches 200+ innings in relief at a 141 ERA+, that’s more than three wins.
by ken on Sep 8, 2011 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions
that was a different environment
200 innings wasn’t the bench mark it is today for starting pitchers.
It will get better.
I'm talking about Marshall
His ’74 season that you mentioned above
by ken on Sep 8, 2011 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions
I know you are
but what i am saying is that if I am correct WAR compares an individual to the mean, and 200 innings in 1974 was no the same feat it is in 2011.
It will get better.
No
WAR is not a rate stat, but a counting stat.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Sep 8, 2011 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions
If it underrates Marshall as a reliever
doesn’t it stand to reason that it also underrates Mo?
by Charlie Scrabbles on Sep 8, 2011 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes, but if it underrates relievers on a per-inning basis, then Marshall is more underrated
in those seasons where he threw a shit ton of innings.
by ken on Sep 8, 2011 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions
True
But even if we assume WAR discounts Marshall by half, he’s still far behind Mo.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Sep 8, 2011 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Also
I think much of the reason why Marshall’s ‘74 looks so meh by WAR is because of his modest K/BB ratio. As we’ve seen with BroYo all these years, it seems to turn up it’s nose at those who rely more on their defense.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Sep 8, 2011 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions
Just for funsies, Trevor Hoffman's career WAR is 30.7

Rivera is not in the discussion

silence, foul temptress!
I hate the d-backs today on account of that.

i'm sure larkin would have made it if not for his poor treatment from the front office of the reds
if only he could have played for a quality organization like the nationals!
What was the criteria for being a candidate to be on this 'team'?
Because while these are some great players there’s no way Mike Schmidt beats out Pie Traynor or Brooks Robinson just to name a couple off the top of my head…..where’s Pete? Where’s Frank Robinson…
Kevin Youkilis: If I were to go anywhere, I would want to go to Cincinnati .
You are joking, right Mads?
I mean about 3B, at least?
expectations are premeditated resentments - cheshirecat
Nope. Brooks Robinson and Pie Traynor as all around 3rd basemen beats out Schmidt, unless you're looking at HRs and RBI's
Kevin Youkilis: If I were to go anywhere, I would want to go to Cincinnati .
They are really hard to compare
They all played in different era’s in different environments, and defense is really really hard to quantify.
It will get better.
Well, I think a part of the criteria is a pulse and an ability to play in the charity game
So Pie Traynor and the Robinsons probably aren’t the best candidates.
Sounds like it should have an entry as a sex act on Urban Dictionary

think they'll play tonight?
Weather’s been pretty horrible here in the northeast. Roads are flooded that have never flooded before.
It’s probably a good thing the SWB Yankees didn’t make the postseason. They’re evacuating Wilkes-Barre today.

What was the criteria for being a candidate for the this Field of Dream Team?
No Pie Traynor
No Christy Mathewson
No Brooks Robinson
No Frank Robinson
No Babe
No Lou
NO PETE
Kevin Youkilis: If I were to go anywhere, I would want to go to Cincinnati .
i think they have to be alive
so they can play the winner of promotion can play them.

Pie Traynor is much better than Cake Traynor.
