Game 159: Reds @ Pirates
Cincinnati Reds at Pittsburgh Pirates, Sep 25, 2011 1:35 PM EDT
If the Reds hadn't gone 4-10 against the Pirates, their record would have been better. Or worse. But probably not the same as it is.
Even if they rarely beat them this season, I guess it helps to stand next to the Pirates after clinching your 10th losing season in 11 years.

"broiled [cheese] baguette"
does that mean you put the bread in the broiler to melt the cheese? Or something else I’m not picturing?

yep
The broiler melts the cheese and toasts the baguette.

So does BP get his Last Contract from the Reds?

I've gotten more comfortable with the idea of him getting
a contract that takes him into his mid-30s. Depending on the financials.

They should really expand rosters to 45 in the final week
And allow stunt-casting. Like letting Julio Franco get a MLB PA in another decade.
They could stipulate that the Final Week players could only appear in games that had no bearing on the playoffs or homefield adv.

yeah
but I bet it will start to nag at Votto. He strikes me as the kind of guy who could let that kind of mental lapse/laziness get to him. I expect him to try and make it up on defense or something
I'm not really sure
I think he tried to steal 3B, but Cousin of Crabman saw him and Joey just kind of gave up. Stood there between 2B and 3B and let himself be tagged out.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
thanks for the recap
that is pretty lazy and un-Joey like. It’s actually kind of embarrassing and slightly shameful
I can see not wanting to get into a rundown or slide into 3B
at this point in the season, when you’re caught dead to rights.
But jeez, why even bother trying to steal 3B, if you’re going to be so half-assed about it?
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
yeah
stealing 3B is bold and requires more effort than that. If you don’t really want to steal 3B don’t!
Can we sign Dontrelle to a 2 year contract
have him as a spot starter but work on his outfield skills. There, left field problem solved.

so
Are the Reds still in search of a leadoff hitter for next year, or will they just let BP do it?
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I dunno
But teh Fay seems to think a leadoff hitter is still a priority.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
So how many leadoff SS or LF are out there?
who are overall upgrades to what we have, not just upgrades to our leadoff spot? Personally, I think (hope) Walt is smarter than this.
expectations are premeditated resentments - cheshirecat
I mean, sure, if you get Brett Garnder than have him bat before BP
but BP has to bat 1st or 2nd at this point, so why not just have him bat first? You then need a prototypical #2 hitter, sure, but those are theoretically easier to find.
Really, it’s just a semantic argument, I guess.

I still agree with you. What I meant by “that is all” is “everything else in the ‘batting order’ discussion is just semantically differentiating the same argument.”
"You said 'walks' twice."
"I like walks."
I could go either way
One the one hand, my feeling is that there’s no one on the free market who can improve the team affordably, and we’d be better off staying in house.
OTOH, that’s what I thought last year, and it didn’t work out. The other teams in the division are improving, and we have to keep up. Even the Pirates might be a threat next year.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I'm not sure where you're going to find someone with a higher OBP than BP

they could park Mesoraco in AAA instead
I’m not in favor of this, but the Reds might be. He’s batting .158 and OPSing below .600. He has not been all that great on defense. I could see Walt deciding he’s not ready for prime time.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
or maybe Mesoraco
They still have Grandal, after all.
I really didn’t think they were going to keep Ramoan, but the announcers seem to think it’s a possibility. Then there’s the fact that the Reds did not trade him, when surely there was some interest.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I can see this happening.
Resign Hernandez to a 1 or 2 year deal, trade Hanigan for something, and hope Grandal’s ready in a year or two.
"Red Reporter - An elitist clique full of like-minded douchebags." - BK
He'd split time with Monie or start for the first year or two, then you've got Meso/Grandal after that.
At that point, you’ve got hopefully a catcher to trade.
"Red Reporter - An elitist clique full of like-minded douchebags." - BK
I'm for keeping Monie as long as Dusty uses him for what he is good as
A backup catcher with the occasional pinch-hit opportunity and English tutor for Cueto.
I'm not for keeping him
if that is his role, he will be FAR too expensive. He’s gonna be too expensive for my tastes, regardless, considering the other options we have and their practical free-ness and just-as-goodness.

I think how good a hitter he is, though,
is more than just a sideshow. As I think Ken argued, you can take maybe a 1/2-run off his ERA. I haven’t run the numbers, but it’s possible his bat helps make him good enough for the rotation. He’s borderline – and I’d probably rather see him as a long relief/left specialist, as his bat could still see around 3-4 PAs a week, maybe averaging slightly less than he would as a starter if he was used as an occasional PHer too.

if the Reds do move Votto
that’s the kind of deal it should be.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I think you need Pineda and Carp (he's a LF, right?) as the core of the deal.
I’m in the Redleg Nation camp of “you just don’t trade Joey Votto.” But I agree, if it has to happen, it has to be for something of that caliber.
Pineda, Ackley would be a hell of a haul
I’d do it for that. Or Pineda + Carp. Or Pineda + League + Peguero
expectations are premeditated resentments - cheshirecat
dunno about that
I feel like Pineda might suck in GABP, or be pretty mediocre. Carp is decent but probably not a whole lot better than having Heisey out there in LF.
really?
780 OPS for Heisey vs 800 OPS for Carp? Doesn’t seem a whole lot better.
Only 25 games this year in OF
Well, Safeco is a really bad hitter's park
He has better discipline and BABIP ability, with probably slightly less power.
expectations are premeditated resentments - cheshirecat
well looks like his ability to field is substantially worse
he’s a LF/1B at best, which means he’s probably a worse in the field than Heisey would be. Doesn’t have a single SB in his MLB career. I’d say he’s a tiny bit better, not way better.
I agree though that Pineda isn't a great fit for GABP
but losing the DH offsets that somewhat, at least.
expectations are premeditated resentments - cheshirecat
It's fun to think about:
Carp seems like a decent get, he could do some damage in GABP. Justin Smoak is around and could give ewok a happee.
Pineda is, of course, a huge deal. He strikes people out and doesn’t walk folks, I would love to have him around. Cueto/Pineda/Leake is a pretty killer 1-2-3.
Could Ackley manage at SS? He’d be a hell of a SS who could move back to 2b if/when BP leaves.
I want to reiterate that I’d hate to see Votto leave. But if he had to leave…yeah…there’s some potential in Seattle.

But there’s no one to play 1B for him now.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

Though he doesn’t run too good. Fouled a ball off his knee or something.
Frazier has that swollen hand. He pinch-hit yesterday, but I don’t know if Dusty would actually put him in the lineup yet.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

not bringing back CMM is a no brainer
he is old, and can fall off a cliff at any time. Even if Meso makes a slow MLB adjustment, Hanigan is a competent catcher. If the Reds can stash Corky Miller or somebody of his ilk in Louisville they will be fine. Money that would got to Hernandez would be better allocated somewhere else.

Finally a win for the Reds. a meaningless win but at least it is a win.
Kevin Youkilis: If I were to go anywhere, I would want to go to Cincinnati .
I hope if Dusty ever manages important games for the Reds again, he takes a page from Joe Maddon's book
Last night Maddon removed his starter after a 2 run first inning, because he his stuff sucked.
Game 1 of the NLDS was a similar situation, but Dusty left Volquez in until the game was out of hand, when he had both Bailey and Wood in the bullpen.
Nice to see a few managers with half a brain in their head, and being proactive.
"Life is such a vapid world pool of nothing"-Eddie Pepitone
teh Fay
Jocketty said the Reds will likely bring in veteran to back up Cozart. The club also has to make a call on Paul Janish, who is eligible for arbitration.
Obviously, it’s risky to go with a guy with as little experience as Cozart.
The Reds’ on-base plus slugging (OPS) from short was .595 — second worst in the National League. Cozart put up a .825 OPS at Louisville.
If he can come close to that, he’ll be the guy and then some.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
jesus titty fucking christ
are they going to once again burn a few million dollars on a has been?
If cozart sucks of Janish gets hurt, fucking trade for Renteria2012, he can’t cost too much.
"Life is such a vapid world pool of nothing"-Eddie Pepitone
That's Jocketty...
he doesn’t learn. Janish is a fine backup for Cozart. You can get a scrap heaper like Renteria any time.
i mean a 1 year 2-3M contract doesn't hurt ath baddly
but he has a smaller budget in Cincinnati than he did in St. Loius, he needs to be more efficient.
That is money that could go towards a fine bullpen arm, or towards other parts of the organization like scouting and development and things like that.
"Life is such a vapid world pool of nothing"-Eddie Pepitone
There's also an opportunity cost...
of not giving young players at bats. Guys have to play to adjust to the major league level. And if the players do well they bolster their trade value. Alonso has really bolstered his trade value to the point where he could be the main piece in acquiring an ace.
I think he did learn
He went with Janish this year, and it didn’t work out. Then Cozart got injured. It turned out to be a good thing he had Renteria on the roster.
I think the Reds will probably re-up Janish, if only for depth. He has options, so could be stashed in Louisville. If not, they’ll probably have to sign someone else as an insurance player.
But if the Reds are contending, I can see Jocketty wanting a veteran as well. Sure, everyone’s hoping Cozart will work out, but there’s no guarantee. Even with his .825 OPS in Louisville. For some reason, the Bats were mashing this year. I don’t think I trust the offensive numbers they put up. Even Janish OPS’d .750 in Louisville this year. Despite starting out in a deep slump (1 for his first 22).
Then there’s the possibility of injury. At one point this year, Janish was the only healthy SS on the roster. I don’t think Walt wants to be in that situation if the Reds are in contention.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
but much would a guy like Renteria cost on the trade market?
i am pretty sure you could get him for a low level prospect.
"Life is such a vapid world pool of nothing"-Eddie Pepitone
I'd nbe OK with Janish as the back-up SS
if there was a way to ensure he’d remain the back-up and get no more than around 225-250 PAs.
But while I hope Cozart can be the fulltime starter, he’s recovering from Tommy John surgery next year (on his non-throwing arm) and has all of 38 PAs in the majors. The back-up becomes the starter if he falters or gets injured — and there’s not enough SS depth in the upper minors for it to be anyone but Janish starting again after the experiment failed miserably this year.

I think Janish might do better given another chance. He’s doing pretty well now.
But if the Reds are contending, it’s not a risk I can see Walt taking.

in baseball, alas
It almost always ends badly. Even if the player turns out to be a superstar, and your team can afford to keep him, one day he’ll be old and slow and no longer able to play, and 99 times out of 100, he won’t admit it and will try to hang on. Very few are like Mike Mussina, who walked away after the best year of his career, and didn’t look back. Brett Favre types are far more common.

Oh there is only on Brett Favre.
Well, I’ll at least grant that there is one Brett Favre and one Manny Ramirez.

I'm wondering if they might re-sign Renteria
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I am certain that Dustwadfuckpants in lobbyinh hard for EdRents's return.
And Edgar can still hit reasonably well. It is just that Dusty feels the need to play the old guys and the old guy back ups way too much.

well
Teh Fay says the Reds won’t re-sign Renteria.
Renteria is 36 years old. His range is severely limited, so it’s unlikely that the Reds will bring him back.
Jocketty will sign a veteran SS, but Fay thinks it will be someone other than Renteria.

I swear to God, if it's Alex Cora I will call for Walt's head

Can Cozart be Reds’ main man at shortstop?
Teh Fay thinks that Janish doesn’t hit well enough to be a bench player, and that the Reds would be better off with Frazier. But by my count, barring an unexpected trade or injury, there’s no room on the roster for Frazier, either. Assuming 12 pitchers and 2 catchers, you have room for 11 position players. That’s going to be:
Votto, BP, Rolen, END, Cozart, Heisey, Stubbs, Bruce, Alonso, Cairo, veteran SS.

The beautiful thing about the universe is
As this year and its failure draws to a close and the teams that were better than the Reds play to see who is crowned the undenied success of the 2011 campaign, we move closer to the rebirth of 2012. Baseball is one of the great Phoenix’s of America. Every year, with the rebirth that occurs in April, Baseball once again rises from the ashes, the World Series winner is tied with the worst team in baseball, and we start again. You don’t know what will happen, aging veterans put up surprise years (Scott Rolen 2010), rookies come out of no where (Mike Leake 2010), some prospects fail (Homer Bailey), some burst onto the scene (Aroldis Chapman), some former prospects take their position amongst the best (joey Votto, Johnny Cueto), and some veterans show sign of age (Bronson Arroyo).
On April 6th, we will be back tied for first with Milwaukee, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Houston, anything can happen, and I for one can’t fucking wait.

Like a Phoenix
Reborn?
Bart: "Dad, what's a Muppet?"
Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."

Intentional walk to get to Brandon Laird.
It’s always a good idea to walk somebody to get to a Laird.
I wonder if he looks as mentally handicapped as his brother, Gerald.
where is ol pete?
I haven’t seen him around lately, but I did kind of block out that whole Brewers debacle last weekend
The corpse of everyday Scott Proctor gave up 3 runs in the 14th

Oh and did you hear? Jacoby Ellsbury will now win the MVP.
Because he kept his team from blowing a lead in their 100000000th chance to not completely collapse.
