Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

Doug Dirt broke the news earlier today on twitter, and now John Fay says that a Zack Cozart is registered at the Reds' hotel. We've been through this before, but today might be the day that Cozart comes up.

I'm not looking for a large impact from Cozart

but at least it’s nice to see some semblance of doing something. It’s a move, albeit a small one that’s probably happening later than it should have.

Calmer than you are.

by 3 Fast 3 Furious on Jul 7, 2011 10:44 AM EDT reply actions

We'll never know why they didn't do it then.

Maybe there was something scouting-wise on either Cozart or Janish or Renteria that made them hesitate. It clearly wasn’t the numbers. But if this is happening today, I think the move comes about a month later than I would have done it.

Yeah

It’s tough for me to be excited about it now, it should have happened so long ago. All the same, this is a positive development.

So who is the odd man out? Are they giving Renteria the ol’ heave-ho or is Janish headed down to Louisville?

by Charlie Scrabbles on Jul 7, 2011 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Didn't you read the article on the reds site a couple of days ago?

Renteria was “heating up”. So that means Dusty prefers him and his veteran knowledge….haha.

by OGC Reds on Jul 7, 2011 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions

My guess is Janish to L'Ville, he has been pretty awful

Renteria is at least showing “some” signs of life.

by jch24 on Jul 7, 2011 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions

I still think the occasional brilliant defensive play from Janish makes him better

but it they’re intent on keeping Edgar, I’m fine with sending Janish down. Maybe we’ll get a little power from this f-ing position for once.

by pack_fan on Jul 7, 2011 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

I would feel very bad for Janish if that happens

he has waited a long time to get a crack at the starting job and they keep bringing in aging dudes to take time form him If he gets sent down, I’m pretty sure that would be crushing

by Red_Poodle on Jul 7, 2011 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

So I guess all he had to do was hit & field and/or be out of options

Or even if I just like such as judged a fish contest that would get me outta the house and in some air.

by RoastBeefKazenzakis on Jul 7, 2011 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Rent gets more of a break

…. because he has shown he can hit in the past. Janish never has. Though the numbers may not back me up, I like the idea of having Renteria’s bat on the bench more than Janish’s. This is assuming that Cozart gets called up to play and not sit.

The season doesn't start until the Cincinnati Reds take the field! Reclaim The Opener!!

by TheC on Jul 7, 2011 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Janish's glove on the bench

more than Rent’s bat. But yeah, I don’t really care either way.

by Charlie Scrabbles on Jul 7, 2011 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Right. They are both the absolute last option as a PH.

I’d probably use Leake before either and Wood before Janish.

Yeah, if anything, this goes against the numbers

Since Fay had his “hunch” about a callup, Coz has slumped considerably.

He’s still hitting for average and getting on base, but he only has 1 XBH in his last 11 games or so.

1. Make coffee

They’re very space conscious, I understand. Often times, the toilet and sink are in the shower. The sink rolls away to reveal the toilet. I’m not sure, but this may be possible there.

by johnu1 on Jul 7, 2011 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I assume he could just ask at the front desk...

Still, wouldn’t that potentially jeopardize his relationship with the team? I’m sure the team would still work with him, but it is a shady enough thing to do that it could rub people the wrong way. Right?

by badenjr on Jul 7, 2011 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Reporters do it all the time.

I’ve gotta defend Fya a little bit here. It’s not shady, the hotel gave the information to him. He’s been asking a lot of questions even though he is getting pretty rude answers from Jocketty and Co. We pick on him when he doesn’t ask the right questions and now that he has figured out some pretty good information people are still giving him a hard time.

by Cuetotally Amazing on Jul 7, 2011 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

It is creepy for Teh Fya to go around asking who is checked in, but the hotel shouldn’t just give that kind of info out to some random guy.

I hate giving credit to McAlister for anything, but this is a good point.

Look at Krivsky’s 2006 and 2007 drafts:

2006:
Rd 1—Stubbs
Rd 3—Valaika
Rd 6—Jordan Smith
Rd 7—Justin Turner (starting 2B for the Mets)
Rd 17— Chris Heisey

2007:
Rd 1—Mesoraco
Rd 1s—Frazier
Rd 2—Cozart
Rd 21—Jeremy Horst

Of course, a lot of those guys haven’t produced anything at the MLB level yet, but that’s still a ton of guys who have a very real shot of getting regular MLB time soon. Those are some productive drafts.

by sexsalad on Jul 7, 2011 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

To be fair, most of the drafting decisions come from the scouting director.

In the Reds’ case, that’s Chris Buckley, and he has done an amazing job since coming on board in 2006 or 2007. The GM has final say, but it seems like Walt goes with Buckley’s recommendations.

Also, to be fair, Walt has onboarded Alonso, Sappelt, Leake, Hamilton, Joseph, Grandal, and a whole bunch of other young guys with potential. It’s entirely possible that when we are 4-5 years out from those drafts (like we are now with 06-07) they could look just as good.
