Trade deadline day anger sadness happiness open thread
Ok, I think it's needed that we have one of these to celebrate MLB trade deadline day. Ubaldo is going to Cleveland! Slow-Cab is going to the Giants! Rich Harden trade to Red Sox fall through! My Reds prediction: No trades. And here's a fun nugget after the jump to get the proceedings started:
Yeah, as if trading Bengie Molina and installing rookie Buster Posey hurt the San Francisco Giants last season.
Fire Dusty.

And at least the Reds didn't get Michael Bourn
FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports that the Braves have acquired Michael Bourn from the Astros in exchange for four minor leaguers.

Either in the form of nothing at all, or in the form of a trade that we will all think sucks beyond Raven Riley’s ability.

I would love if we could get Quentin from Willams
All of the major suitors are gone (Braves, Phillies, etc)
Williams and Walt matched up in the past with the Griffey deal. Also both GMs are good at keeping rumors quite from their offices. I think we could get him for a package around Grandal and Francisco/Frazier

I dunno
We may as well play Alonso if we’re going the good bat/no field route in LF. Quentin being a righty is helpful but not really a difference maker. Plus he won’t be cheap next year (~7M), and then he’s gone.
we are going to have to get a LFer somewhere

Bedard would be a good pickup....
but only if the reds could steal him. I wouldn’t give up too much for him. They say a lot of teams are backing off because of how he pitched Friday. That could be to the Reds advantage. He’s actually had a descent year.

It blows Jocketty backed off on Bourn!
I’m sure they were asking for the farm though. They didn’t get as good of prospects from the Braves as they would have from the Reds. It would have been nice to see him batting leadoff instead of Drew Flubbs and his Adam Dunn K rate!
I didnt realize how good a player Bourn was
just a step below elite- plus defense and offense. Very wise move by Atlanta didnt give up a top 10 prospect for a huge upgrade at leadoff.
Comparably deal from Reds – Heisey and Grandall- Grandall much greater potential value than anyone in the Atlanta package. I like Heisey alot more than Schafer.
Bourn/Stubbs/Bruce OF top defensive OF in the league all should be at least average offensively for their position with potential for all 3 to be plus. Would have been a good move.
He's not that good. Nowhere near an elite player.
He’s having a career season, but that’s all because of a .381 BABIP (40 points higher than his career average).
Once that regresses, he’ll be back to the .270/.340/.370 player he’s always been. I’m glad Walt didn’t get him.
It feels so nice to be back to normal
Your Bourn hate doesn't make sense
His BABIP is always high because he has blinding speed.
He’s been getting on base at a .350 clip for 3 years. He is a prototypical leadoff hitter.
Only gripe is he K’s too much, but since those don’t matter anymore, he’s A-OK.
A dope trailer is no place for a kitty.
by GlennBraggsSwingAndMissBrokenBat on Aug 1, 2011 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
It's not hate. It's realism
Before this season, his career OPS was .679. He’d never had a single season above .738.
This year is way better than the others, due SOLELY to a BABIP that is 40 points higher than his career average. Since his BABIP is based primarily on his speed, it makes no sense that it would suddenly get that much better. In fact, as he continues to depart from his speed prime, it will likely only go down.
So, as he regresses to a more normal BABIP, he’ll be back to the .270/.340/.370 (those are all generous, BTW) player he’s always been.
It feels so nice to be back to normal

who cares about his OPS?
he gets on base as a leadoff hitter, which is something the Reds lack, no?
the Reds could trot out a leadoff man with a sub .700 OPS, as long as that person is getting on base at least 35% of the time, right? Or better?
The ends justify the means
by Highlifeman21 on Aug 2, 2011 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions
OK, hypothetically speaking
Either he replaces Stubbs in CF, or he plays LF.
If he plays LF, that means he is a well, well below average hitter for the position, and his speed is largely wasted there.
If the plays CF, that means he replaces Stubbs. Bourn’s career OBP is .338, Stubbs’ is .330. Not much upgrade, but a complete loss of power. Not to mention that Bourn will cost about 10x as much as Stubbs next year.
Bourn isn’t a terrible player, but he would be completely superfluous and useless on the Reds.
It feels so nice to be back to normal
I thought Bourn got on base better than .338

aside from not dealing Ramon that is
the Reds are likely nowheresville this year in the division, no reason at all to make a deal right now. Wait until the offseason.
I didn't expect much
But there really is no reason to keep Ramon Hernandez around right now. Needed to trade him for a prospect and then bring up Mesoraco.
I think it’s the curse of having really desirable prospects. Other teams were asking for a ton from the Reds, but Walt wasn’t THAT desperate, so he held firm. I’m glad he didn’t overpay for anybody, but I still think there were some moves to be made at the margins to help the team.

I think a big part of it was
a lot of our desired prospects were guys like Chapman of Mesoraco, and I can’t blame Walt for not dealing them. The Reds are lacking a little on big name A/AA guys, most of our big young names are with Cincy now (leake, etc.). Alonso I could see being undervalued in the trade market, Grandal and Wood too. We did not have the bullets other teams had like Pomeranz or Wheeler. We also weren’t in a place to buy due to the teams struggles this season. Like you, I’m slightly baffled by not moving Ramon, but I can kind of understand it if the only thing being offered were meh type prospects.
from Sheldon
"We thought we were maybe yesterday. In the end, it probably was not as close as we thought it was," Jocketty said. "We tried working on a number of big deals and some of the guys that were traded, we were in on most of them. Some of the requests for us, we felt were ridiculous and a lot more than we were willing to pay."
The big issue was that team were asking for some coveted Reds prospects.
"Not just one or two," Jocketty said. "It just didn’t make good sense for us in the short term or the long term. So we pulled back. We still believe we have enough talent here to win the division. I think we have to play better and I think this weekend was a great indication of what this team is capable of doing."
Jocketty believed that talks with Houston fizzled over the Astros’ reluctance to deal within their division.
"I think that was a big part of it," he said. "I think that’s why they asked for a lot more from us than what they got."
Sounds like he tried.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
gee, called that one

So, someone help me out with this.
Ramon being a type “A” would net the Reds two top picks, right? What is the advantage to trading him? Aside from getting our boy Meso up here? I mean, with the draft track record lately, I’d rather take our chances there then what we would get from another team for a rental player. I don’t see a way the Giants would give up a first round caliber player, or two for that matter, for two months of CMM. Am I misunderstanding the scenerio?
Wear something sexy to my funeral.
by Pops Daniels on Jul 31, 2011 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Ideally yes, but we have to offer him arbitration to get the picks.
It’d be harder for him to get a job if he were a type A and he’s having a great season, so I think there’s a decent risk he’d accept arb and get $5-$6M on a one year deal next year which is probably more than the Reds are willing to pay. Given how they approached the Rhodes situation last year, I’d be surprised if Hernandez is offered arb after the year if he’s a type A.
Ah, I see.
So, the risks are getting nothing at all or be stuck with him for way more than you want to pay.
Wear something sexy to my funeral.
by Pops Daniels on Jul 31, 2011 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions
but realistically
if CMM accepts arbitration for, say, $5 million, he’s still a catcher signed for a 1 year 5 mill deal who is coming off of a year where he’s posted a .300/.360/.500 (so far) season.
While he may not net 2 top picks, if he accepts that offer, he’s still a pretty tradeable commodity. The Reds may only be able to trade him as if he was valued at 3 million (since he’s old), but they could still get almost as much value for him in the offseason on that contract as they could right now, provided he stays healthy and the catching market continues to suck.
I think Walt basically told himself that it’s worth that extra $$ risk to keep him around for the rest of the season to see what they can do.
Tequila and pancakes, anyone?
by Kevin Mitchell is Batman on Jul 31, 2011 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions
One advantage is you save on the signing bonus you'd give to your draft picks
Plus you have a longer track record to gauge a prospect rather than a draft pick. But I agree that with our scouting department, we may as well gamble on the higher upside in the draft.
There’s also some risk that the FA compensation structure might change with the new CBA this winter, so the Reds could end up with just one pick even if Ramon was a type A.
Has the scouting been terrible?
Seems, from the active roster, that Cueto, Leake, Votto, Bruce, Stubbs, Bailey, Frazier, Hannigan, Alonso, Ondrusek, LeCure, Janish, Heisey all came through the Reds system. Some of the non-ML acquisitions through trade
Others from the 40 man include Travis Wood, Yasmani Grandal, Zack Cozart, END, Valaika.
Noted minor leaguers also: Mesoraco, Hamilton (Billy), Sappelt, Ted Shackleford
Not really sure how to fit Chapman situation in there. I don’t think he was a particular secret.

The other side to this
is that there is zero chance Ramon passes through waivers, and only a teensy chance he makes it all the way to SF.
He’s not going anywhere. BUT, if the Reds are still out of it in September, they’ll call Devin up when rosters expand and I could see them giving him significant playing time then. So really, we’re only losing a month of seeing him by not trading Ramon. No biggie.
I also don’t think they’ll offer Ramon arb. Too risky.
It feels so nice to be back to normal
I could see a few teams putting in a claim for Monie this month
The Giants are the obvious one, but the Pirates, Brewers, and Diamondbacks could claim before them. If nothing else, the DBacks will put in a claim simply to block the Giants.
