SIS - 2011 All Star Game Chatter, Ditch the Main Page ASG Thread edition

This is an unsanctioned game thread, not sponsored by RR or SB Nation.  Rally Cleavage is perfectly acceptable, in fact it will be encouraged during innings where Scott Rolen hits.  If moderately juvenile behavior and images offend you please take the opportunity to roll to the main page where, most likely, a more vanilla game thread experience will be posted for your enjoyment and participation.

Who's throwing out the ceremonial first pitch?  Which is worse, the Black Keys or Arcade Fire?  Where in the hell is this game being played this evening(i skipped the HR Derby broadcast)?  When will ESPN get the hint and retire Chris Berman from everything except nfl highlights on Prime Time? Has Barry Larkin set foot in Silverton since the Italianette opened 25 years ago?  And do you really trust ANYONE that doesn't absolutely love summertime???

They are wearing the normal uniforms tonight, right?

I always hate ASG’s (any league) when they don’t wear their normal uniforms. I’m pretty sure MLB doesn’t do that as often as the other league but I’m fairly sure that I recall at least one game where they wore the National/American jerseys during the actual game.

It has its flaws for sure (refereeing mostly)

But the quality of play gets better year after year. It takes a little getting used to if you’re mostly watching the EPL, and it’s better live, but it’s coming along.

I used to follow MLS religiously

but then most every significant US player went overseas, and thus my fanhood followed.

I’m still just waiting (and hopefully with the 17K per game attendance avg this year, it’s starting) for the MLS to be able to attract more than just over-the-hill, looking-for-their-last-paycheck type international players to let it explode.

Of course, that will take big money owners and a league that will allow MLB type salary exceptions, but you can always hope.

More teams are starting to invest in talented youth

Vancouver just spent Designated Player money (eg. David Beckham money, but not quite that much) on a 24 year old Gambian. Dallas did the same on an 18 year old Colombian. Other teams are really ratcheting up their youth academies, like the European teams have. Juan Agudelo (“the next great American striker”) came out of New York’s academy and is now a regular on the national team. DC has four academy players on its roster. Three of them start regularly. One was MLS Rookie of the Year last year and is now on the Honduran national team. Another could potentially be a US national team goalkeeper of the future.

The overall quality of play is getting better. Slowly, but surely.

No, I meant isn't Barcelona's academy the best in the world?

I read that the academies in La Liga have far fewer strictures on their recruitment than in the EPL.

I guess that doesn’t kinda read like I think Barcelona is in the EPL.

Perhaps he won't be

That seems to be the fate of good MetroStars/Red Bulls. However, MLS does keep some of its top talent, most notably Landon Donovan. Taylor Twellman, too, though that might have been a mistake.

by Brendanukkah on Jul 12, 2011 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Donovan still befuddles me.

He’s had offers, he had success at Everton, and he’s seemingly turned down money.

by BK on Jul 12, 2011 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, but youth targeting is one thing

signing talented 22 year olds who have established themselves in major leagues is another.

Watching Neymar, Hazard, Ganso, and Sanchez be coveted for 40 some million euro is crazy, yes, but especially since those guys are between 19 and 23 years old.

If the MLS could sign even Joe Cole, Diego, or Bendtner (mid 20’s guys who were mid level players), it’d be a huge step up.

Fact is, those types still won’t sign with MLS clubs.

They will eventually, I believe, but that’s quite a ways off.

by Kevin Mitchell is Batman on Jul 12, 2011 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

The money in even lower European leagues versus MLS is still quite a disparity. But it’s getting better. MLS was always about slow growth, and it’s growing slowly. The cool thing is it’s been around for 15 years now. And the soccer’s not unenjoyable now. Proximity definitely helps, and I wonder if I’d be as big a fan as I am if I hadn’t gone to games on a regular basis.

by Brendanukkah on Jul 12, 2011 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not at the point where we're getting young players from Europe yet

But we’re already seeing established guys from South America, and we’re doing better than ever with keeping young American stars from going abroad (for the most part). Sure, your Dempseys and Jozys aren’t coming back anytime soon, but the fringe USMNT guys are starting to come from MLS.

Actually, the league signed its first designated player from Africa today. Sure, they signed him from the Belgian Second division, but it’s something.

The fun thing about MLS is all the access you can get

If you live in a town with a team, I guess. Ticket prices are reasonable. I’ve been to several meet the team events, and sometimes volunteer on game days where I’m right there in the players tunnels and on the field. I’ve randomly bumped into DC United’s coach twice on the street, and one day as I was walking home, took a bit of a different route and saw him sitting in his front yard. He lives just a few blocks from me!

The quality of the league is definitely improving, but of course it’s not as good as Europe. But the passion of some of the fanbases is really impressive, and I find it’s a lot more fun to root for a team that I can interact with on a regular basis rather than having to get up at 7:00 on a Saturday to watch. Plus the tailgating.

Mostly I’m just glad that soccer’s getting more of a fair shake here, and the access to it is so much more impressive than it was just a decade ago. I don’t think everyone has to like it, but it’s cool for people that do.

by Brendanukkah on Jul 12, 2011 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions

See, this is where we disagree

And while the vast majority of Americans would probably have no problem with it since they’re Christian, there are literally millions of people who would be uncomfortable with it. Is baseball a Christian exclusive sport now? Are Hindus supposed to sing “Gods Bless America”? I don’t need church in my American pastime, thanks.

Waited a while after 6 to come out to read it. I remember realizing that the hype pissed me off. I thought to myself that there were books I enjoyed far more, and I pretty much stopped paying attention. I think there’ll be about 10 of us wearing cloaks and whatever badass dark clothing we can find. We’re going to have one of our friends give us Death Eater tattoos and go dressed like that. I think we’re also making wands (under the influence of alcohol) tomorrow… I kinda love geeking up for Harry Potter one last time.

I was the only one of my close friends to read the books

I’m trying to get my girlfriend into them before we see the 7th movie. And for costumes, I would probably make a pretty sweet Dudley

Hahaha, nice

If LB wasn’t in Iowa, she’d be doing all of this stuff too. Stupid theatre junk. Luna would never go do theatre in Iowa. I love Dudley in the 5th movie when he’s trying to look all gangster and junk.

I will be at the theater Thursday night with the boy

It's not actually her. Think it's a lookalike.

Evanna Lynch isn’t bad looking by any means, in my opinion, but I don’t really have that much of a sexual attraction to her. It’s more of a “we should be good friends who go look for bugs and animals and stuff and have the occasional drunken tryst” compatibility.

It STILL blows me away that our little crolfer isn’t so little anymore.

It is kind of shocking, ain't it?

Kind of weird how much a sports blog can end up shaping a person too. Guess that’s the world we live in today, hm?

By the way

Just saw Netflix is going to $16 for streaming and 1 dvd by mail. WTF? Why do good things always have to change

by TheCinWin on Jul 13, 2011 12:16 AM EDT reply actions

because demand is high

I'm guessing not

The streaming section isn’t worth 8 dollars right now in my opinion

by TheCinWin on Jul 13, 2011 12:22 AM EDT up reply actions

It's funny we live in a world where a vast collection

of movies and tv shows can be made easily accessible to us for only 8 bucks a month and we’re not impressed anymore. Try telling ourselves this 10 years ago, when we were still having to go to Blockbuster and shelling out 5 bucks per.

Yea, it's not good when we can already do "back in my day" spiels

about this kind of stuff. But technology moves so fast that Some new thing will come out and blow away everything we have now in the next 5 years

SHOTS FIRED.

Go get Beltran. Kemp. Ubaldo. Now.

by KSE on Jul 13, 2011 12:20 AM EDT up reply actions

If the Reds are going to go after any improvements

I’d prefer they were in or close to first prior to that happening. Not to say they’re not close to first, but I’d rather a trade like this were the last piecce we needed, rather than just a piece to get them to the playoffs where we still lack that #1 pitcher (this is assuming Ubaldo is not traded for, which I still think is a huge longshot).

2 PTBNL eh?

wonder if any are from the recent draft.

by pack_fan on Jul 13, 2011 12:55 AM EDT up reply actions

top three picks are still unsigned

so probably not. Wonder what they would have in their farm system for a deal like this.

by pack_fan on Jul 13, 2011 12:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Can't be.

Draft picks can’t be dealt for a year after signing, so the guys this year are out.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jul 13, 2011 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

true, but they can be named as a PTBNL

so long as its within six months of the draft, per the post below.

by pack_fan on Jul 13, 2011 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think so. A PTBNL has to be transferred within 6 months of a completed deal.

Or January 13th, which would be well within a year of the draft. So, if true, it’s impossible for any of this year’s picks to be a part of this trade.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jul 13, 2011 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions

and yes

per that none of this years draft picks are involved

by pack_fan on Jul 14, 2011 1:05 AM EDT up reply actions

My money's on Mat Gamel being involved

Because the Mets haven't picked their players yet

From what I saw, there’s a list of 5 players for the Mets to choose 2 from.

ah I see

I sometimes forget that teams will give the other team a list, rather than the 2 players be known but the names required to be held back for some reason or another.

by pack_fan on Jul 13, 2011 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

That's got me worried, as a Brewer fan.

The Mets are hinting that one of the guys they’re going to take has been in the big leagues this year, but isn’t now. There’s a lot of guys that fall into that category, and Gamel’s one of them.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jul 13, 2011 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Nah. A player can't be traded

before one year since his signing date after being drafted. PTBNL must be determined within six months of the trade.

The Brewers system lacks depth. 2B Ryan Gennett is my guess as being one of the guys potentially in the deal.

We Are ... Marshall!

thanks TT

I know the one year rule, but have been told in the past that that can be worked around as a PTBNL. I did not know about the 6 month time limit, and have always wondered if there was a time limit on those transactions.
