The 2011 Draft: Day 3 Thread.

Did you know Mike Piazza was a 62nd-round draft pick? Keith Hernandez went in the 42nd round. Plenty of other players selected in round 30 or later have reached the big leagues.

Tim Lincecum was drafted in the 43rd round out of high school, but the Indians refused to meet his $1 million price tag and the Cy Young winner to be went to the University of Washington before becoming a first-rounder with the Giants in 2006.

While today doesn't hold the excitement of Day 1 or even the appeal of Day 2, the third day of the MLB draft offers an opportunity to acquire some players who can contribute or even be stars. Let's hope the Reds land a few of those today. I'll be following the draft as it unfolds, offering commentary on each player the Reds select. I hope you'll be along for the ride.

On Thursday, I'll have a wrapup of all the Reds picks, including a "Turtle's Take" on what I think of the pick.

Baseball America has a nice feature on Amir Garrett,

the Reds draft pick who has a basketball scholarship to St. John’s, on its front page at baseballamerica.com. It’s a nice read. BA is a terrific resource. I encourage you to check it out.

Thanks, buddy!

A few others drafted after the 30th round include

Kyle Farnsworth, Mark Buerhle, Orlando Hudson, Todd Coffey and Jason Isringhausen. I think we’d be pleased with that type of haul today, wouldn’t we?

While we're awaiting the draft to begin,

here’s an atta boy(s) to three, yes count them, three Marshall players selected yesterday. It appears the Thundering Herd is moving from Conference USA to the American League West. Texas selected two MU players — LHP Greg Williams in the 12th round and LHP Mike Mason in the 23rd round. Oakland drafted OF Rhett Stafford in the 22nd round.
The Herd’s last two major leaguers — Rick Reed and Jeff Montgomery — played for the Reds .

If Garrett is going to play both sports, is he still going to demand $1.5M in bonuses?

Because that’s a tall order if we don’t have that commitment.

I doubt he'll require that much, esp. since he's already made it know he'll do both.

Also, I think if he plays both they are allowed to spread the bonus over 5 years.

I don't know that they even have to play both.

I think it’s just if they’re a legitimate 2 sport prospect, whether they end up playing or now. (Obviously I may be wrong)

out of the pen, going 7-7 with a 4.63 ERA. In 79 2/3 innings, he allowed 88 hits, walked 18 and struck out 58. Opponents batted .289.

Miller is a power arm.

He pitches off his fastball and has performed well in summer leagues in Alaska and New England. TCU used him as a starter and a closer. He projects as a reliever and scouts think he could thrive with his low-to-mid-90s fastball in a bullpen role.

Dennhardt was considered one of the top hurlers

in New England before undergoing Tommy John surgery that cost him this season. Before the injury he threw 92-94 on a good downhill plane. His curve was average and he had a developing change. Dennhardt was impressive in the Cape Cod League. He’s likely to be expensive, even with the injury.

A 6-1, 205-pound junior, he missed the early season with a proken hand suffered when he was HBP. BA ranks him the No. 50 player in Arizona. Selsky was a 34th-round pick of the Rockies as a draft-eligible sophomore. He was All-PAC 10 last year.

Bowman is a very toolsy player

Perfect Game ranked him the No. 27 draft prospect prior to the season. Frankie Pilere rated him No. 87. He didn’t make BA’s Top 200. Scouts say Bowman has 60 power on the 20-80 scale. He has fine speed and a RF arm. His glove is excellent.

In 2009, Bowman went 13-54-.333 with 14 doubles and three triples to earn freshman All-American honors. That summer, he was the Valley League’s top prospect after batting .298 with 34 RBI and stealing 13 bases in 15 tries in that summer circuit. He was voted the No. 1 pro prospect in that league.

In 2010, Bowman went 15-63-.279 and stole 8 bases in 11 attempts. He was 5-19-.202 in the Cape Cod League, but displayed impressive power. He struck out 29 times and walked five in 119 at bats.

An honor student, Bowman has above average speed.

Amlung's favorite team in the Reds.

His favorite athlete is Barry Larkin. The 6-foot, 174-pounder is athe No. 3 starter on a strong U of L staff. He went 5-1 with a 4.01 ERA. In 2010, he was 5-2 with a 4.27 ERA, allowing 72 hits with 55 Ks in 65 1/3 IP.

Amlung is a graduate of Louisville’s St. Xavier HS.

Amlung walked on at Louisville.

He took the spot that opened when Jake Odorizzi signed with the Brewers instead of accepting a scholarship from Louisville. More of a thrower than a pitcher early in his career, Amlung has improved dramatically, especially with his command. He throws a 90-93 m.p.h. fastball and a solid slider. He’s 10-2 with a 2.26 ERA. In 75 innings, he allowed 65 hits, struck out 34 and walked 13. Foes hit .236. Amlung had one save.

sounds like a decent prospect but have to think him falling to the 41st means no one though they could sign him

You are correct, sir!

Stallings is very strong defensively and is stellar in controlling the running game, but his bat is a huge question. In 392 college at bats, he has five home runs. This season his slash line is .272/.389/.400. In 2010 he went .307/.417/.457. In 2009 he was .246/.366/.263.

His dad is Kevin Stallings, head basketball men’s coach at Vanderbilt.

BA ranks Stallings the No. 16 prospect in North Carolina. He’s big for a catcher — 6-foot-5, 215 pounds. He has gained 30 pounds since his freshman season, but it’s been good weight. He also plays first base.

He’s a 6-foot-4, pitchability left-hander. His fastball is in the 87-90 range and his changeup is promising. Radke features strong control, a curve he can throw for strikes and has the arm speed to make his change effective. Radke gets good downhill plane on his fastball. A series of minor mechanical adjustments could give him a jump in velocity.

Radke struck out 272 in his first 201 high school innings. His arm works well and he has upside.
